Advantages of checks in America:

1. No fees to cash.
2. You can take them to any of your bank accounts (or even Walmart ) to deposit or cash.
3. Banks here typically credit the money within 48 hours.
4. Sponsors typically charge no fees for checks or very low fees.
5. The mail system is typically 99.9% reliable.
Well as an european I was surprised that cheques still exist when I found out they are so popular in US. Its really the most stupid thing to do.

How does it work in any European (and probably most of the countries in the world):

You work at a company, the payday comes, company sends money from their bank account to your bank account. Its like p2p transfer basicly. You get the money in your bank account the same day. Cost of this transaction is for example 30 euro cents if you use the same bank as your employer or for example 50 euro cents if you use different bank. Hell maybe these operations are even free in some countries, it varies. Thats it.

Now with the cheques: you need to print it, sign it, send it. Employee must wait for it, then spend time (30 minutes, hour..) to go deposit it just to get the same result as the one I described above. I wonder how many billions of dollars US lose every year just because people waste so much time just going to cash their cheques. Lets say each one spends (wastes) 2 hours a month just for this useless task. Its billions of dollars damage to the economy yearly... Why the fuck they can not implement the SIMPLE solution that I described above??? Its unbelievable... and makes 0% sense.

I used to get checks from HPics out of The Netherlands all the time. Took like 10 days to get here but were fine on my end. They paid like $3 in postage and I suppose a fee to transfer the money to dollars perhaps but it was fine here getting a check from The Nertherlands.

They did fuck up once and just sent another check. Took another ten days but no big deal. Here a foreign check will prob never get lost in the mail as they are pretty noticable.

I never go in the bank. I put them in an envelope with other checks and into the machine. I have NEVER in 13 years had a bank ask me about any check from anywhere.

Maybe the problem is your banking system not the checks.

Anyhow just saying. Fear not, Paxum will prob be the next epass. Payoneer was too slow (edited for politness) to jump on it correctly.

No matter what the argument is about the stupidity of checks or whatever. Us idiot Americans do get our money without too much of a hassle. The money issue seems to be more of a problem with you advanced Euro sophisticates. Probably should clean up your shit first before busting our chops.
Just sayin...

We do get our money without too much hassle. The prob is not getting it, it's keeping it.

In Timbuktu the opposite is prob true. Hard to get. Easier to keep. All a trade off.

Doing all bank to bank transfers then using your plastic card to pay bills and buy everything. Makes for sweet accounting and a road map of exactly where of every dollar transaction was made and to whom. Hard to hide anything in that system.

Kinda like in Las Vegas now a days. when you play the slot machines you put your money in and get a receipt if you win anything in return. That is just not the same as having 5000 quarters chunk out rapidly one at a time. ( done that one time and it was fucking great).

Checks are more like cash to me. I have it in my hands and I can either let my bank know I have it or just go and cash it.

Receive Check - Scan it into my Chase acct via phone App - File pay stub away for my accountant.

I don't have to provide my bank account number to others, thus saving me one last piece of personal info floating around out there for others to see. Wires are great, but in America, checks are still widely used. We don't have check fees like many other countries.

On top of that, if you receive wires from 10-20 sponsors a month, those $30 fees can add up to thousands in lost revenue every year.

This won't be the last bank to offer this, and the iphone won't be the only smart phone to have apps like these:
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...one-mobile-app

Now no time needs to be spent to deposit checks.

All americans have to understand the problem everyone outside of north america faces with checks:

1) They are sent by mail, which takes at least 3 days to get to europe for example
2) Once the check is there, the bank takes at least 48 hours to credit the money, if not longer.
3) Once the money is credited, european banks usually keep it blocked for around 3-6 weeks, because US law says a check can be canceled after it is deposited (even if no bank in the US even does or allows it, which I am not sure about, it's a law, eu banks do not give a rats ass what the banks actually do)
4) A US check costs at least 25 EUR to deposit in a normal EU bank.

All europeans have to understand that the problems of cost for us with checks is like for americans with wires.

Some general false information in this thread:
1) SEPA transfers are NOT FREE!!! The rule is not that they have to be FREE. The rule is that they can not cost more than inner-country wires!!! Sure, most banks in europe charge 0 for inner-country wires to individuals, but that does not make SEPA transfers always free.
2) SEPA transfers are allowed to take up to 3 days. EUE Transfers though take around 45 minutes in the EU considering cut of times (usually around 3-4pm), but cost money. But usually not much more than 5-10 EUR regardless of the amount.
3) Banking systems in the various different countries in europe defer greatly. A wire inside Belgium usually takes just a few hours to receive. A wire inside Germany up to 3 days if not longer.
4) An international wire transfer usually does NOT go directly from bank to bank! In case of the SWIFT system it goes via the SWIFT network and gets routed accordingly. In case of non-SWIFT it often takes even longer.
5) A SWIFT wire especially to banks in the US usually goes for correspondance banks and not directly between the banks, unless it's major players. For example a wire from Deutsche Bank to Wachovia in the US usually goes from Deutsche Bank branch to Deutsche Bank Frankfurt to Bank of America NYC/Wallstreet and then to Wachovia.

The international banking system in general sucks ass, and sadly there are no perfect solutions for worldwide wires. It will get there at some point though, I am sure.

I didn't take the time to read this whole thread, so I won't ask any questions.

I make enough so I don't have to worry about the cost or delay from depositing a check I received from Australia or any other country for that matter. Yes It's slow and has fees.

When Epass went down, MY CHECKS STILL WORKED!

Good post. Indeed in the US you do need to provide a cooresponding bank as well as swift codes for both your bank and the corresponding bank. My bank also uses the Bank of America as the main "correspondent" bank.

So much to learn.
