"It's a completely original screenplay," Gilroy says. "This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter...this is a stand-alone project."

Earlier this year, Paul Greengrass, who had helmed the first three "Bourne" movies, departed the fourth project over creative differences with Uni. Speculation soon began that Matt Damon, who also worked with the director on "Green Zone," wouldn't be returning either.

"The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal," Gilroy says. "Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy...the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road]."

Universal has hinted that it hopes to release the pic in 2012.

Exactly. It wasn't like it was broken and the popularity of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne was falling off. At the end of the last movie, the love for Jason Bourne was as strong as ever. I was in a movie theater where the audience clapped when he started swimming in the water at the end of the last movie. How often does that happen?

I read somewhere about a year ago that Damon was up in the air whether he wanted to do another one, I guess he is really tight with Paul Greengrass and said at the time he definitely wouldnt do another if he wasnt involved.

Yea, my 8 year old has a hard time following the story too and usually ends up falling asleep.

This first Bourne movie was cool, beyond that, pretty lame IMHO. But it was successsful, so why do this? Just make another fucking movie altogether. My guess is that they couldn't get Damon. Which is I guess why they are trying to do what they are, and just hoping they capitalize on the name a little bit...

I dunno why they trash franchise names like this though. Look at all the shit awful American Pie movies they've come out with since the trilogy. Pure garbage, but they managed to keep Eugene Levy on, so they just keep rolling em out now and people still buy them because they recognize the name.

Good to see you DWB, but I fear this isn't backed by a well written series of books, so this will probably be a massive disappointment.
I loved the bourne series, doubt this movie is worth renting on dvd.

I hated the second Bourne film the first time I saw it (after loving the first) but you have to watch the 2nd and 3rd one a second or third time to fully appreciate them - very much like the Matrix trilogy.
