if buying backlinks is bad, then can't your competition buy about a million shitty backlinks for your site and fubar it in the serps?

I hope you're joking. It's pretty damn hard to mess up backlinks enough to get an established site go down that much. In fact, I'd bet you money you couldn't with just backlinks.


And to the OP, backlinks help. There are a variety of ways, some are better than others. Natural is obviously the best but there are ways to simulate that perfect with Hamiltonian paths

You can get another site banned. People argue about this point all the time. It can be done. If the site is new, its quite easy to make it go away for 6 months or so. If its older, established and has a ton of great backlinks, it might not be possible or at best, it will just take a temporary dip i the SERPs depending on how crazy you get with it.

You don't need to buy links. There are plenty of tools and bots are easy to make build links.

If you were "buying" links, it would typically come from well established sites, so it would be very difficult to harm another site like that and the net result would be that you just gave them a bump in the SERPs, not the other way around.

Partially true. Just to give you an idea of how hard it is for an established site that has been around for a while, it'd take 100,000 malicious backlinks a day to take it down in the SERPs anywhere.

The strange thing with backlinks, is that you can have 400 backlinks, but only 3 (with luck) will show in google when you use the backlink checker.

If it goes away for "6 months or so" then it isn't banned it's "sandboxed" and the sandbox is easy to get out of.
