MSNBC suspended "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann Friday following the news that he donated to three Democratic candidates.

"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," said MSNBC president Phil Griffin, in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

Politico reported Friday that Olbermann gave the maximum individual donation of $2,400 to three candidates in Tuesday's election: Arizona Congressmen Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva, and Jack Conway, the Kentucky Senate hopeful who lost out to Republican Rand Paul. (Grijalya appeared on Olbermann's "Countdown" on October 28, the same day the host donated to his campaign; Conway was last a guest in May).

Olbermann, in a statement to Politico, said that he "did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns nor to any others in this election or any previous ones." Also, Olbermann said he had not "previously donated to any political campaign at any level."
But the revelation raised clear ethical issues.
Olbermann, a liberal commentator, gives his opinions each night on the air. But NBC News editorial staffers -- like journalists are most news organizations -- are forbidden from giving to political candidates. Also, Olbermann anchored election coverage Tuesday night without disclosing that he'd given to candidates who were running for office.
By punishing the network's biggest star, Griffin showed how little tolerance there is for hosts to make political contributions while covering politics.

MSNBC already attracted criticism this week for having its liberal hosts and commentators anchor election night coverage. Typically, nonpartisan journalists anchor major news events—such as election results—with commentators like Bill O'Reilly (Fox News) or James Carville (CNN) offering analysis.

It's ironic that Olbermann gave to political candidates after criticizing Fox News following reports that its owner, Rupert Murdoch, gave $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. "Fox News has put its money where its mouth is," Olbermann said in an August segment where questioned the network's impartiality.

In October, Olbermann again raised the issue of Murdoch's donations during an interview with Congressman James Clyburn. He asked if there is "a legislative response to the idea that there is a national cable news outlet that goes beyond having a point of view and actually starts to shill for partisan causes and actually starts to donate to partisan groups of one party."

Something else Olbermann clearly lied about (Not Surprising) is that Rupert Murdoch, gave $1 million donation to both the RGA and the DGA.

Olbermann found out the difference between an employer and employee. Yes Keith, Murdoch is an employER...and a rich one at that. Those government people you cry should be able to do something about him giving money? He's probably given money to them. He can basically do whatever the fuck he wants. You? You were an employee, aka glorified slave. You lose. Sucks huh?

it was News Corp that technically gave the money

In June, Fox News' parent company News Corporation gave a $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. This evening, IRS disclosures reveal that News Corporation gave another check, time for $250,000, bringing his total donation amount to $1,250,000.

This is a major strike against Fox News - this makes Murdochs millions in donations to the Republicunts even a FAR more egregious violation of this country's principals.

Is it really that hard to say "yeh, Keith fucked up"?

I never understand why people do this.

"Obama is continuing the Afghanistan war!" "Yeh, but George Bush started it!"

Both are true. Does one fact really negate another fact?

It isn't the end of the world. Keith knew the rules, he broke them, of course while lambasting others. It's a suspension, he hasn't been fired yet and probably won't. He's worth a lot of money and MSNBC would be making a mistake to fire him that quickly, doubt they will do it.

I am sure they have looking for an excuse to dump Olbermann for a while. He was obviously an embarrassment to the network..... even his fellow lefties think he is an insane blowhard.

I love those "Red and Blue" Democrat and Republican maps of the U.S. - people still think democrats and republicans are two different things? They're all crooks and liars, well most of them, with a few exceptions.

Olbermann potential gets axed from MSNBC and you want to blame Fox News for it...Comedy Gold!

According to records filed with the Federal Elections Commission, General Electric ? the parent company of MSNBC ? has donated more than $1.1 million to Democrats during the 2010 election cycle. In fact, more than 60% of political donations from the corporate giant have gone to leftist candidates. That figure is similar to the 2008 cycle, when General Electric gave 64% of political donations to Democrats.

And yet somehow this is still Fox News fault...more Comedy Gold!

I'm assuming english is not your first language? How did you get "blame" or "fault" from anything I said. You appear to have about the same ability to understand politics that a 5 year old autistic child would have.

This suspension of Olbermann is a good thing - it's a shot across the bow of the Republican propaganda media outlet (otherwise known as FOX) - holding people accountable to fairness in journalism is more important now than at any time in our history.

It's time this country started rejecting bogus news organizations that exist ONLY to further the agenda of large corporations and old white millionaires.

Oh the hypocrisy!

Fox News host Sean Hannity gave $5,000 to the political action committee of conservative hero Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., in August, and his wife, Jill, gave another $5,000, Federal Election Commission records show.

Then again republicans would have to actually watch something other than fox to be aware of how many democrats are actually being critical of the president.

I rarely watch fox news, I watched CNN on election night and it was some of the most biased reporting I have seen in awhile. MSNBC is the gutter of news networks so I would have to assume they are just as bad.

Fox did 7 million viewers on election night, the next highest was CNN with 2 million.

The India trip has already been proven wrong, I didn't see the story on Fox, I read it on Yahoo I think.
As for my side, My side is whats the best for America, not the GOP or the Dems. I've said this many times, I'm an independent, just because I bash the dems and the POTUS, doesn't mean I'm a republican, it means I don't like whats going on in government until January, the dems are in charge.
The country is center leaning right, more right now thanx to the democrats fucking things up.
Trust me, I will be bashing the GOP for any failed attempt to not see the light about what people want.
I watch MSNBC from time to time, it's not they are liberal, it's that are Left of center, they will run several stories about whats going on in the country and NOT bring up what the president is doing about it.
I usually watch GMA in the morning, surf the Internet for stories during the day and get Fox for O'Reilly, he just has the best show IMHO and according to the ratings, I'm not alone

Weather you agree with me or not, thats cool, thats just one of the cool things about our country. We can still be like that, but as soon as Obama started in on Fox news, I had a problem. I mean like me or you can't report on me?

When he pushed thru the healthcare bill after Scott Brown won Kennedy's seat, he didn't think that counted as a message that the people didn't like what was going on.

Now, he has lost all that power of a democrat controlled house and senate, the people have spoken with their vote and let Barry know that they are still in charge.

My hopes are that the GOP does as they have promised, thats what they ran on. That it will put business's at ease about spending, expanding and above all else, hiring. That the issues about what healthcare is going add to their cost, and that taxes will not take away all of the money they invest.

I also hope that any social agenda will be kept at bay by the democrats

California, I think we're fucked here

So Fox News fired Olbermann then?

This is fucking hilarious...rather than get upset at MSNBC for firing Olbermann or simply taking it in stride that Olbermann broke their company policy (which he did), people are finding reasons to point fingers at Fox somehow for this? How is that even possible in this case? What does ANYTHING happening at MSNBC have to do with Fox? Fox News is gh3y but jesus, you people are trying to take jabs at them for something that didn't even involve them in the slightest. That would be like pointing fingers at Fox for CNN firing Sanchez, or NPR firing what's-his-face. How in any way is Fox responsible for the decisions of other entities?

Read it again - no one is blaming fox - I'm saying its a shot across their bow...

MSNBC is standing for an American principle that Fox flagrantly shits on.

The day after the election they pumped 600 billion more into the economy. All the talk of budgets and they want their first order of business to be to extend costly tax cuts to the rich. I'm sure they'll continue trying to do exactly what you are hoping, unfortunately that is basically fucking the country over more.

Liberals, Progressives and Democrats simply cant stomach the blame for anything...not in there own lives or the people they support, never have and never will.

At the end of the year when Comcast gets full control of NBC Universal and the major changes happen at MSNBC somehow, someway the start will align themselves and people will still blame Fox News...im calling it now 2 months in advance.

Ben Bernanke was following the executive order that Barry singed for the quantitative easing plan, its not as if the Republicans got together and said "Hey lets buy back 600 billion dollars of U.S. Treasury securities".

What principle? Having unbiased news?

Seriously though, what's the difference between anchors that support a particular party all day long with their words/actions and anchors that support a particular party with money? Does supporting them with money somehow trump the fact that they incite/reaffirm the views behind such support all day long on TV? What difference is there? Seriously, I'm all ears on this one. It's not like Olbermann woke up and suddenly changed from being an objective news personality to being a subjective one with this contribution. They didn't fire Olbermann the moment he showed clear liberal bias, they fired him for making what is honestly an inconsequential contribution of money to a party. If you want to pat them on the back for having that policy or for sticking to their guns and enforcing the policy even on someone like Olbermann even on an inconsequential sum of moeny, then I can understand that, but to act like they are being altruistic and proving non-bias with the policy and/or its enforcement is ludicrous.

People like you hound Fox News for their "fair and balanced" bs (and rightfully so)...how can you possibly read more into this other than they have a particular policy which really has no bearing on how biased they are, someone broke that policy and got fired?

How would putting 600 billion into the economy then letting the tax cuts expire taking out 700 billion out the economy do any good?

Because all rich people do is buy luxuries...they don't own any businesses and don't earn their money. They certainly don't employ anybody. They're a complete leech on the system. Duh!
