MSNBC suspended "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann Friday following the news that he donated to three Democratic candidates.

"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," said MSNBC president Phil Griffin, in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

Politico reported Friday that Olbermann gave the maximum individual donation of $2,400 to three candidates in Tuesday's election: Arizona Congressmen Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva, and Jack Conway, the Kentucky Senate hopeful who lost out to Republican Rand Paul. (Grijalya appeared on Olbermann's "Countdown" on October 28, the same day the host donated to his campaign; Conway was last a guest in May).

Olbermann, in a statement to Politico, said that he "did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns nor to any others in this election or any previous ones." Also, Olbermann said he had not "previously donated to any political campaign at any level."
But the revelation raised clear ethical issues.
Olbermann, a liberal commentator, gives his opinions each night on the air. But NBC News editorial staffers -- like journalists are most news organizations -- are forbidden from giving to political candidates. Also, Olbermann anchored election coverage Tuesday night without disclosing that he'd given to candidates who were running for office.
By punishing the network's biggest star, Griffin showed how little tolerance there is for hosts to make political contributions while covering politics.

MSNBC already attracted criticism this week for having its liberal hosts and commentators anchor election night coverage. Typically, nonpartisan journalists anchor major news events—such as election results—with commentators like Bill O'Reilly (Fox News) or James Carville (CNN) offering analysis.

It's ironic that Olbermann gave to political candidates after criticizing Fox News following reports that its owner, Rupert Murdoch, gave $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. "Fox News has put its money where its mouth is," Olbermann said in an August segment where questioned the network's impartiality.

In October, Olbermann again raised the issue of Murdoch's donations during an interview with Congressman James Clyburn. He asked if there is "a legislative response to the idea that there is a national cable news outlet that goes beyond having a point of view and actually starts to shill for partisan causes and actually starts to donate to partisan groups of one party."

it was News Corp that technically gave the money

In June, Fox News' parent company News Corporation gave a $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. This evening, IRS disclosures reveal that News Corporation gave another check, time for $250,000, bringing his total donation amount to $1,250,000.

I'm assuming english is not your first language? How did you get "blame" or "fault" from anything I said. You appear to have about the same ability to understand politics that a 5 year old autistic child would have.

This suspension of Olbermann is a good thing - it's a shot across the bow of the Republican propaganda media outlet (otherwise known as FOX) - holding people accountable to fairness in journalism is more important now than at any time in our history.

It's time this country started rejecting bogus news organizations that exist ONLY to further the agenda of large corporations and old white millionaires.

I rarely watch fox news, I watched CNN on election night and it was some of the most biased reporting I have seen in awhile. MSNBC is the gutter of news networks so I would have to assume they are just as bad.

Fox did 7 million viewers on election night, the next highest was CNN with 2 million.

When he pushed thru the healthcare bill after Scott Brown won Kennedy's seat, he didn't think that counted as a message that the people didn't like what was going on.

Now, he has lost all that power of a democrat controlled house and senate, the people have spoken with their vote and let Barry know that they are still in charge.

My hopes are that the GOP does as they have promised, thats what they ran on. That it will put business's at ease about spending, expanding and above all else, hiring. That the issues about what healthcare is going add to their cost, and that taxes will not take away all of the money they invest.

I also hope that any social agenda will be kept at bay by the democrats

Seriously though, what's the difference between anchors that support a particular party all day long with their words/actions and anchors that support a particular party with money? It's not like Olbermann woke up and suddenly changed from being an objective news personality to being a subjective one with this contribution. They didn't fire Olbermann the moment he showed clear liberal bias, they fired him for making what is honestly an inconsequential contribution of money to a party. If you want to pat them on the back for having that policy or for sticking to their guns and enforcing the policy even on someone like Olbermann even on an inconsequential sum of moeny, then I can understand that, but to act like they are being altruistic and proving non-bias with the policy and/or its enforcement is ludicrous.
