Convicted fraudster Alan Ralsky has been spamming for many years. He has grown from a small time operator, under the "Additional Benefits" moniker, to one of the bigger spam houses on the Internet with a gang of fellow morally challenged types working with him to pump out every type of sleazy deal and scam offer into millions of internet users' mailboxes.

He does both mailings and hosting for people who want to spam. Using dial-up accounts that he buys under aliases or leases from large modem dial-up providers like UUNet, Genuity, etc. He sets up a dummy ISP pretending to have "users" that need dial-up access. This serves his purposes well, as complaints are directed from the large providers to this dummy ISP and of course thrown away. Due to the big bandwidth purchase, large networks often close an eye to the spamming so as not to lose the revenue.

Nowadays Ralsky hosts 'offshore' in China to evade US authorities. But the offshore hosts are soon blocked and terminated so he's forced to hop from one Chinese provider to the next like most of the spam gangs. One of his tricks in the USA is to host the websites on the same dial-up connections he uses to spam out of. He then uses an auto-updating DNS server to point to a new IP address whenever one of the dial-ups drops carrier or gets cut off. Behind the times as usual, the companies who provide the connection for his DNS servers state that "our Acceptable Use Policy doesn't cover this... we need to talk to our lawyers, etc. etc.", which gives the Ralsky gang several weeks of use.

Since they've been at this since 1997, Ralsky and gang know just about every spammer trick in the book, hijacking foreign mailservers to hide their tracks and avoid filters, using free websites, fake free websites, obfuscating URL's, encrypting webpages, and always having a backup system for the inevitable time when their current accounts are canceled.

What can be done to stop him or keep him off a system? Double check any signups from the Detroit, Michigan area, his home base (but he's famous for using false information). Check for anyone who just wants to run only a DNS server. Set up a large "clean up fee" for spamming in your contracts - it may be hard to collect, but at least it will give you leverage.

What can you do if you are spammed by Ralsky & gang? If you are in a state that has anti-spamming laws, Ralsky would be easy to sue as he normally breaks several of the conditions current laws specify (faking headers, bad remove address, bogus subjects, etc.) See the link below. You should also complain to anyone providing him service to expedite his termination.

What can you do if Ralsky & gang hijack your email server? Call the police & a lawyer, this is criminal in most of the United States. It is also "theft of services" and there is case law to support it. The problem is, Ralsky is aware of this and now normally hijacks mail servers in other countries making legal action more difficult.

It also seems Ralsky himself has a criminal record, see the ROSKO records entitled "Legal troubles in Michigan" and "Legal troubles in Illinois" AND "Legal troubles in Ohio".

When someone trying to make a bucks sends mail it's called "spam" !

Bit of a double standard there surely..... AOL are the worst, they always try to stop spam, but those fuckwits keep sending their lame disks in my snailmail. The irony is that is takes me longer to throw it in the bin that it does to delete spam and spam doesn't use half a forest for a compaign.

Just trying to even up the anti-spam lame bullshit here !

they complain about everything, i get a guy that sign ups for a opt-in list, and then he tells me i'm spamming him. BS

Oh please. If you are doing things legally you will NEVER have anything to worry about. Show logs, IPs, dates and times (like any true opt-in) and no ISP on the planet will hassle you. One complaint from your mailing lists bugs you? 80 spam emails a day bugs me.

Ralsky mails from dialups and still says he pushes millions of sends a day (just like every other spammer). If all the spammers spammed what they claimed they spammed every person on the planet would get about 10 pieces of mail per day, regardless of whether they had an email account or not.

No idea whether this thread erupted from another (just woke up) but guys like this have become the punching bags for angry sysadmins who have to deal with spammers all day long.

Can't tell whether you're joking, but if not that's one of the smarter things I've heard in the last few days. If you are joking, well the joke's on me.

Free trials won't be the 'end' because there is nothing wrong with giving someone a free trial (look at all the TV products that do) but being DECEPTIVE about it is what will end up causing a lot of processing problems.

man you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, yes I have ip's, times and dates, but it doesn't stop the dumb pricks from complaining. I think the point was that when large companies mail it's "marketing", but when small/medium companies do it's called "spam".

I'm not talking about my program, just the basics behind mailing.
So do you kick some poor salesperson when you go shopping for asking if you would like to try some new type of cheese ?

That's what spam complaints come down to ... it's just a kneejerk white knight bullshit anal thing ...

I know the owners of one of the largest Mainstream Mailing company, they mail 100 bilion emails a month, they run alote of stuff. They have 100+ mail servers with a 100mb/ps line tap out... Most of the mainstream spam comes from them. The company is on the Nasdaq :Traffix but i don't remember th eTicker...

they own Misscleo ( or they use to, i'm not sure if that is still running). i'm to tired to name all their companies they get their emails from, but they have a pretty good network of sites that collects opt0in emails. Last time i talked to them they were making $5million a month Gross income.

They have Deals with AOL and all the big ISP to get their IP golden(they can get in without any problems) If you cancel with them they will send about %60 less junk, and if you cancel again they will resell your email to other spam companies. So you tell me who is the spammer in this perfect world.

i don't know if this makes sences i didn't sleep yet so take it easy

OH and on another subject, SOME OF YOU GUYS not all, you guys have OPT-IN list, and you resell those list to people and those people uses them like it's a OPT-IN, and if someone complaints well nothing no one can do because you have their IP and TIME stamp. So tell me wtf is that, i subcribe to something, and you resell it to 20 people and then i can't complain because you all say i opt-in, but actually i opted in the first dude that reselled the list 20 times.
