I think this thread is a good spot to park my One Night in Mexio City story.

Back in 2003, when I was a single party-animal and before I moved to Costa Rica, my friend and I had gone down to Costa Rica to check it out. On our way back we had a 7 hour layover in Mexico City and we didn't realize the timezone was different than CR's; so missed our flight.

It was a pretty dead Sunday night, so we went to the Zona Rosa (pink zone) to see what was happening. We ended up having a rather expensive meal (probably gringo tax) then couldn't find any open bars in the area.

This guy on the street corner invited us to a strip club, so we took him up on his offer and made our way to the outskirts of town. We found a strip club, with more than a few hot ladies.

Now, as we had never been to Mexico before, we left almost all our money and all our cards,etc... back at the hotel. So we had on us, say, $300 or something.

We told the waiter we only had X cash, and to notify us once our tab reached that limit.

Of course, the night goes on and when the tab comes, we spent WAY over what we had on us. The waiter of course plays dumb to the fact we already had told him how much money we had on us.

The manager and his security guys, hand on their pistols, come over to tell us we have a problem. We let them know we have more cash at the hotel, so if they come with us we can pay them. The manager doesn't like that idea and has a better one.

"You go, with my man here, and you stay. If he doesn't have cash you are both dead."

So, my friend drives off with one of the security guys while I wait at the table. After awhile, no sign of my friend and I wonder if the security guy just took the cash and dumped him or killed him. Me being me, I think to myself "well, if this is it, I'm going to enjoy it".

So, I call over the manager and get him to re-open the tab, as I run it up on drinks and girls.

Eventually my friend gets back, but he only brought the exact amount of money we owed plus a little for a taxi. He hands it to the manager who tells him about "our new problem".

Finally, the manager just gets pissed off and takes every cent on us and kicks us out into the middle of nowhere. We stand in the middle of nothing on the outskirts of Mexico City and decide to hitch hike.

We finally pull a car over, with two slimey lookin' Mexicans in it and tell them if they drive us back we'll get them money from the hotel. They agree; the ride is quiet one. When we get to the hotel, we head to our room and crash. Wake up and hit the airport for our flight home.

That's m only experience with Mexico City, so I think they'll be fine as long as they speak Spanish and don't flash the Gringo Tourist-ness.
