Nikon Cameras
I'm a newb to photography - As stated in my other thread, I ordered the Nikon F65 from my camera shop but they didn't place the order from the distributor, so it will be 2 more weeks to get the F65 for me. In order to try to make it up to me, they offered me the F55 for a discounted price (Almost 1/2 what I am paying for the F65).
I have looked on Nikon's site, tried to note the differences between the two, but can't come up with anything. Are the "Optics" the same? All I really want is an SLR that can take outstanding quality photos. If there is a lower quality glass or something I would wait for the F65. If it is just "features" that are different, I would take the 55. Would appreciate comments. |

Those are camera bodies you are referring to. The lenses are seperate. Both of those bodies are capable of taking great pictures with a good lens. What lens are you getting?

I own an N60. It's a couple of years old, now, but I like it. Like someone else said, that's just a body, anyway. If you're a photo newb, start out with some Promaster lenses and filters. They offer good quality at a pretty low price. If you plan to get really serious, you may want to consider a used Hassleblad.

I guess I really fucked up. I got the biggest baddest (at the time) 35MM SLR. It has (had) the fastest auto focus known to man. Could rattle off 8 frames per second for super bad ass action shots.
Then like a fool I went and got a usec Bronica ETRsi Medium format. Again. Only losers use Nikons and Bronicas. ![]() Fuck I wish I was like all the cool people with Canon's. They even have cool names, like "Rebel" all Nikon has are stupid "F" and "N" letters. Nikon's are lame.

There is not a lot of difference between a Nikon to a Cannon. The real difference is the lens, it depends what you can afford, what you are shooting for and where you are shooting.
For the best quality picture go for a fixed lens, or a professional zoom lens. A cheap lens on the best camera in the world with the cheapest lens will produce bad pictures. It's what the camera is looking through that determines the quality of image and the size negative. A Bronica medium format will always out perform a 35mm camera. If you know how to use it. ![]() |

What a flood of replies. Wow.
To answer the questions: Both are kits that include: 28-80mm standard G-type Nikkor lens (no aperture ring) I assume this is a low end lens, should I possibly spring for a bare body and a slightly higher end lens? Totally realizing being new I don't need outstanding gear, but I don't want to get in the place of wishing I had gotten something a *little* better for the sake of $150. |

(if it's just for you photography class, if i remember correctly from your last post) i wouldn't worry about it. If your going to continue shooting you might want to look into several different & better lenses with more zoom and wider angles and also that will work on a Nikon digital body if you ever decide to go that route.
good luck BV |

I use a Nikon F5 and I absolutely love it.. However you would be just as well off with an F100 or an F80...the F100 is basically the same as the F5 but without all the bells and whistles... Very nice cameras, almost totally bulletproof (I have a lot of friends who are war correspondants etc who will use nothing but, simply for reliability). There are a ton of quailty cameras out there though, and see what suits your experience level and your shooting style before committing... it's a fair dollar purchase
![]() I can refer you to some great online resources for camera information, places to ask questions etc... HIt me up either on email or icq and I'll be happy to forward them to you! Enjoy and good luck! |

Compare all of your choices side by side - you pick 'em from a list, and it displays all of their details in a nice table so you can easily go across and see what does what (or doesn't). |

Here's something I wrote a while ago and post in a photography discussion board I'm on whenever anyone asks which camera is best. I've switched to digital and to a different manufacturer since then, but a lot of what I say here still applies to any camera purchase...
Cameras are fairly irrelevant. Any major brand camera can take a good picture provided it has a good lens and a good photographer. This is because all a camera really is is a light-tight box to hold the film, with a shutter to allow focused light from the lens to reach the film for a measured period of time. These are functions any camera can perform. Beginners focus on cameras; more experienced photographers are more interested in the lens. Most "package deals" involving a lens, a camera, and a few other goodies are sold to newbies. They know newbies ponder hours on end over which camera to get and don't think a lot about lenses, so most packages consist of a decent camera and a crappy lens. My philosophy is to forget the packages and go down a step or two in camera price if it allows you to buy a better lens. You will want the lens with the largest aperture you can afford. Why a large aperture? Because you can get shots in lower light situations you'd otherwise have to take a pass on. All lenses can deal with bright light but cheap lenses with small apertures start to get wimpy as the sun goes down. If you ask about just about any lens, you'll probably find someone here who's used one. Generally speaking, lenses made by the camera's manufacturer are quite serviceable but noticeably more expensive than third-party lenses made by companies like Tokina, Tamron, Phoenix. Sigma, Vivitar, and a few others. Usually, these lenses are a very good value for the dollar, despite negative things the camera manufacturers may say about them. I figure, a company which specializes in lenses alone probably does a pretty good job relative to a more diversified company, like a camera company. Most photographers have favorite brands, and these are frequently the brand the photographer learned on. In my case, it's Minolta. However, I know in my heart that Canon, Pentax, and Nikon also make very good 35mm SLR's. For an amateur, it's not necessary to spend a huge amount of money on either your camera or your lens. If you're buying new, it's not necessary to spend much more than $250 on the camera body and anywhere from $150-$250 on a lens. If buying used, you can easily save yourself half that. There are fixed focus lenses and zoom lenses. The optics of fixed focus lenses are generally better than those of zoom lenses, which unavoidably involve compromises. However, these compromises aside, there are also many advantages to zoom lenses, the primary one being that they can get you a shot the fixed focus lens can't because the lens you need isn't on your camera when the moment to take the shot arrives. If you're shooting still life, this isn't a consideration, but if you're shooting people in daily activities or sporting events where capturing "the moment" is everything, or if you will be shooting a variety of things, the advantages of zoom lenses may outweigh the disadvantages. You will hear "Don't buy an automatic camera, it will spoil you; buy a manual camera and really learn how to use it." Well, the people who say this are well-intentioned, but they are probably also technophiles and bona fide photography nuts. This isn't meant as a slam against them, but I do think they forget about the many people who will not be comfortable approaching photography the way they do. If you feel you're a technically-oriented person, by all means follow their advice with a manual camera. If that doesn't describe you, get that automatic camera and use it in PROGRAM mode to start. The idea is to get out there and start taking pictures and discover what fun photography is. As you get confident (or bored), start exploring your camera's other modes: APERTURE PRIORITY, SHUTTER PRIORITY, and finally, MANUAL. Exploring the other modes will gradually help MANUAL mode make sense to you. My view is that God gave us brains, and brains gave us science, so use it. Also, many people, myself included, learn by doing. I can read a manual about how to do, say, infrared photography, but if I don't start doing infrared photography on a regular basis, I'll just forget what I read. Doing it once or twice as an exercise will not make me remember it. I learn what I need to when I need to, and I think this method works for a lot of other people as well. I hope that helps.
