Unfortunately? Jacob Zuma had sex with someone he knew was HIV positive and his idea of prevention was having a shower afterwards. I won't even go into the stupidity of Thabo Mbeki's idiotic beliefs. But his policies contributed to the high rate of HIV/AIDS transmission in South Africa.

Hardly a shining example of leadership in a country that DOES have an extremely high HIV/AIDS rate. BTW they also base statistics on maternal rates of HIV and those are determined through testing and not 'presumptive diagnosis'.

Mbeki got too wrapped up in media representations of Africa which focus on war, HIV/AIDS, poverty and everything else that is negative. There was nothing wrong with his criticism of the representation of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the media. There is a tendency to still only portray Africa like it is stuck in this primitive state like Joseph Conrad described in 'Heart of Darkness'.

He was worried that everyone overseas would see black Africans as diseased, overly sexual, and all the other negative assumptions that many people have about people living in Africa.

He consulted with AIDS denialists, who have been discredited time and again, instead of scientists who wanted to help and had no hidden agendas.

not sure about all this speculation, but i believe that TAC was supporting Mbeki because Mbeki apparently believed they should be producing medicine locally, rather than accepting failed AIDS medication from companies with some serious issues

i believe there even was a multinational lawsuit, fought by big pharmacy, against him to try and stop him from doing this. I can find you lots of local South African sources if you want. The article in the Guardian was the first that popped up on Google, but there are lots more. Mbeki was criticized even more in South Africa than he was internationally. And that was across the board, even within his own party and other activist groups.

Even if you take AIDS denialism out of the picture, Mbeki & the health minister at the time were making statements like it was pointless providing drug treatment because poor people couldn't be relied upon to be compliant. This is an example of class discrimination and wasn't true. There was lots of research done on community workers who worked with people in the townships who had T.B and they DID take their medication and their health improved.

The multinational lawsuit with the drug companies is a separate issue. I agree that the big pharmaceutical companies aren't motivated by goodwill. They are driven by profit and do awful things like block local production of medication, and spend research money on drugs that will earn them money. So other diseases go untreated in the developing world because they know they won't make their money there. So the T.A.C worked with Mbeki in that case.

But Mbeki still believed HIV/AIDS wasn't real and that the symptoms were caused by poverty. His health minister come up with some public health awareness program telling people to consume olive oil and African potatoes to boost their immune systems so they wouldn't exhibit 'AIDS like' symptoms. It was ridiculous. HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence in the developed world because of the medication. They didn't even want the medication when it was offered for free.

Second hand reporting from unquestioned biased sources rather than first hand information from a Nobel Prize winning scientist and head of microbiology at Berkeley... both of whom I have had the privilege to meet personally.

Scientific debate, which should only be encouraged, not politically motivated, biased, and ultimately censored, is the real issue here, not politics. But whatever, show me all your statistics and I will introduce you to people that are HIV free after being told they would die within two to four years from AIDS.

More people still die from TB worldwide by over a factor of ten times the rate of AIDS and you don't see even half the fuss to "find the cure". But it is really more like... find the drug that people have to take daily, right?
