Too much car for an 18 year old?

My son turns 18 in October and yesterday I bought him a V6 Mustang Convertible.

Now I'm having second thoughts. Too much?

He doesn't know I've bought it and has no idea he's getting wheels.

Here's a cell phone pic I took of the car.

Nice car. Not a bad choice really.

thickcash_amo 09-05-2011 04:00 PM

My cousin just turned 16 and my Grandma bought him a damn 2011 dodge challenger. I drove it and all I can say is he is going to freaking kill himself!!

ottopottomouse 09-05-2011 04:09 PM

Too much? Depends what his friends have got.

Dubya 09-05-2011 04:32 PM

He's going to be pissed you got him the V6 model, poor choice dad.

baddog 09-05-2011 04:47 PM

I had a V-8 when I was 16. If he gets pissed about the 6 vs an 8 it means you have spoiled him and should take it back.

Willing to bet it is Europeans that say it is too much.

You are suggesting that it is a parent's obligation to play "Keep up with the Jones'es" with their child's friends?

WOO HOO!

DudeRick 09-05-2011 04:57 PM

It's a good looking car which is all a kid that age cares about. Stock Mustangs (even V8's) are wimps as far as horse power is concerned so you don't have to worry about him street racing.

Lucy - CSC 09-05-2011 05:00 PM

My dad told me for your first car get something that it doesnt really matter if it takes a few hits as they are going to happen.

CyberHustler 09-05-2011 05:03 PM

Does he know you juggle nuts?

WOO HOO!

Unless his son is a cross dressing idiot what use does he have for your opinion?

.

brassmonkey 09-05-2011 05:05 PM

i had two clean ass novas '76 and a '78 at 18 rims and limo tent and a ghetto blaster hahaha!!

fuzebox 09-05-2011 05:06 PM

It's about as fast as your average minivan, so I wouldn't be worried about the power.

Rochard 09-05-2011 05:09 PM

That's exactly what I'm looking to buy my kid, although I've got a few more years of waiting.

It depends on the kid really. Most kids will tear up their first new car. I physically ran two cars into the ground, and totaled two others before I was 18. Yet my best friend in high school had a beautiful Firebird, treated it like a baby, and never had a problem - or a traffic ticket.

If your kid is responsible, then great. If not, buy him (her) a beater until they figure it out.

alias 09-05-2011 05:12 PM

V6, just right. Slap a roll bar in.

That's great input, something to remember.

Lots of great input in this thread so far thanks I look forward to reading more tomorrow :thumbsup

I learned to drive on a car exactly like this one:

http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/wayfarer.html

Same color even.

Had only 19K miles, a radio, a heater, a defroster, a heater under the back seat and Fluid Drive, which meant that it shifted like a regular three on the tree but you could pull up to a stoplight and not depress the clutch, then take off by just pushing down on the gas.

Another view but different color:

HUGE back seat.............................................. ........

kids now a days need to be 18 to get a drivers license? used to be 16 when I was growing up...

19teenporn 09-05-2011 07:15 PM

You should have bought him a real old camaro.
With enough luck it would have turned into a transformer and you would have became rich...

No, they can still get their license at 16 (IN and CA for sure). Some kids are in no hurry. Mine weren't. Blew my mind. I was at the DMV on my 16th birthday.

L-Pink 09-05-2011 07:37 PM

I got my m/c permit in Hawaii when I was 15.

PromoterX 09-05-2011 07:43 PM

You gonna buy him another one when he crashes this one?

Gabriel 09-05-2011 07:52 PM

I dont know your son so i cant give you an honest opinion, but i wouldn't think you'd buy him a car that he may get in trouble with if you didn't think he could handle the responsibility.

Congrats on being able to reward your son so generously.

american pervert 09-05-2011 08:00 PM

my first car was a yellow 81 dodge reliant. it got totaled along with 2 other cars i've owned.

have fun getting it fixed, 18 years olds drive like assholes, esp when they have cares like that.

Pseudonymous 09-05-2011 08:09 PM

It's a V6 and at that weight, i wouldn't at all say that's too much. I have driven one of those, it's hardly that much power that it makes you want to drive it crazy. If he's going to drive like an idiot in that car, he'd drive like an idiot in any car.

iwantchixx 09-05-2011 08:22 PM

Honestly? It's a good choice if he's a responsible lad. Decent on fuel and lots of horsepower. It still has more than any stock v8 ford has produced for the mustang in previous generations.

wild johnny 09-05-2011 08:32 PM

Real nice car.

You must of thought it was perfect for him when you seen it or you wouldn't of got it.

Good choice in my opinion....

I haven't heard of anyone waiting till they are 18, everyone I know pretty much got it on their 16th birthday just like you did...

Mr Pheer 09-05-2011 09:47 PM

I had a '78 Trans-Am with a 6.6L V8 when I was 16. I never got killed in it.

drmadcat 09-05-2011 10:15 PM

depends on what hes like behind the wheel when im with my mum i drive like a nun when im by myself im a little bit reckless

k0nr4d 09-05-2011 10:27 PM

I'd have went with an SUV. Safer in an accident (because it's heavier), handles like shit so he wont be tempted to go fast, and generally slower.

Spunky 09-05-2011 10:29 PM

A great car to learn on and then he can buy his own after he learns the basics

campimp 09-05-2011 10:50 PM

nice car... V6 is good choice i think for him, had lots of friends in high school with V8 mustangs... the majority of them wound up totalled by the end of senior year.... but then again we were all rednecks who loved to race :)

RaiderCash_Dominik 09-05-2011 10:53 PM

I don;t know about convertible part. Other than that looks like a good car.

My Pimp 09-06-2011 01:22 AM

It is not too much.

BIGTYMER 09-06-2011 01:39 AM

Sweet ride! I'm sure he'll love it.

Far-L 09-06-2011 01:51 AM

I don't get why parents give their kids cars in the first place so I am probably the last person that should say anything... but I have to pass this on... I grew up around some very privileged absolutely affluent people and old money wisdom was you never did stuff like buy your kids cars. (Must just be a WASPY Connecticut thing or something... I don't know...)

Good luck with it.

Mike Honcho 09-06-2011 02:15 AM

Depends on the type of person your son is. I'd honestly say yes, not only did you buy him a sports car, but you bought him a sports car with less safety than the hard top. Regardless of the fact that it's a v6, it's still a remotely fast car and chances are he will wreck it. On the flip side of the coin, It'd definitely increase his chances of getting laid and increase his popularity at school. Always good to be the cool Dad. I'd go with what baddog said, if he bitches about not having the v8 he definitely isn't ready for the car.
