Yeah, everyone knows that. But, what people don't discuss often is that France had long been Iraq's #2 supplier of WMDs after the former Soviet Union. And, yes, while the U.S.'s role in arming Saddam is reprehensible, we never sold them the fixin's for nukes, like the French did. And, in fact, Jacque Chirac and Saddam had an extensive relationship. Saddam even visited the South of France as Chirac's guest. They came to a mutual understanding of the "importance" of soveriengty....Chirac the Gaullist, and Saddam the Baathist had much in common. Saddam had a goal for developing nuclear weapons by 1985. France was more than happy to assist. Had Israel not destroyed their nuclear reactor (to world condemnation) in 1982, there's no doubt Saddam would have had nukes by 1985.
