I had 2 things that showed up as collection accounts which had been paid years ago, totalling only a few hundred dollars.

I also had a somewhat-legit one for 800 from Bally's total fitness.

My basic understanding (theory) is that the credit reporting agency's are prompted by lexingotn to investigate. They then send letters to the collectors asking for proof. In my case it would seem the collectors are generally not able to prove the debt. (they are hired by the companies you owe and probably dont have actual contracts on file.

You then will get letters in the mail from each reporting agency showing which stuff was deleted. In my case it was everything.

this also came in very good timing as it lowered my mortgage rate by 1.5%

The thing that makes me nervious about those things is no real address
Lexington Law Firm
PO Box 510290
Salt Lake City, UT 84151
Tel: 888.596.4997
I have never heard of a law firm with a po box address, I really want to find someone who does this but is real.

beemk 04-24-2003 04:09 PM

death to ballys. i successfully cancelled my membership with them (it was hard... but if you do everything right you're ok). then after i cancelled it they called and pretended to be someone else (credit card company i think) and said "are you still at this address _____?" i just said no and hung up.

umm.. they're real. you get a rep, can track progress online, etc.

I was referred to them by a satisfied client who had stuff way worse than mine removed.

btw, they dont promise removal... thats against the law.

Just so you guys all know. You can do on your own what they are doing. All you have to do is contact the Credit agencies and say that the shit isn't yours. They will investigate. And if the company who has the neg against you doesn't respond within 30 days the item is deleted. It can take a bit and some comapnies sell debt and it can get lost in the shuffle. Plus if you move you can make out because the address will not match or some shit like that. But all it takes is diligence and you can do it yourself and save the mula!

But what if they are able to prove it is yours after you lie and tell them you did not incur that debt? Wouldn't that be sort of illegal?

Could you get in trouble for lying like that?

No, federal law (FCRA) states that you have the right to dispute any charge and make them prove it.

Eric is right,, if you wanna do it yourself it is really that simple

ask for your credit report from the big three,, most of the times it is easier when you get the declined credit letter where it says you can view your report..

write to each company from the negative complaint that you want more info on the debt,, if there is no response in 30 days then they have to remove it..

Any credit that you have paid off needs to be closed. Found tons of old accounts i stopped using but never closed
