Protecting MEMBERS AREA Content

What are the best ways to protect a paysite's "Members Area" from getting stolen and preventing theft?

Videos/Pictures/Passwords/etc...

Other than DRM, what is available?

I look forward to informative replies.

Thanks in advance!

do you mean as in other webmasters ripping your content? if so watermark your content.

if you mean surfer password sharing, get www.proxypass.com

I would rather not have my members downloading my content to their hard drives is what I am trying to say.

Good luck with that...most Members have the expectation that they can download content. Be prepared for lots of chargebacks if you don't provide ample warning that your content is not downloadable, and be prepared to lose sells if you do inform surfers that your content isn't downloadable.

My :2 cents:

Let us know how it works for you.

So you think almost 100% of members save the shit to their pc? I didn't know people were so smart.

Sly 05-04-2005 07:59 PM

Slap me for saying this, but I think a lot of you paysite owners are too anal about protecting your content. Yes, of course you do need some protection, but not so much that it HURTS your sales and retention. If it were me, I would whore out my content as much as I could without directly killing my sales. Exposure is good!

Of course, my opinion may be different once I actually have a paysite and run the tests...

Why don't some webmasters allow members to DL their content. Afraid of them sharing eh? Well, thats not a big thing... If I was a surfer and joined your site. I wouldn't stay pass the trial version for not being able to download the vids...

DRM works well for what u want though...

can't give you an exact figure but i can say the majority of my complaint emails are dealing with the streaming video feeds i lease and why they can't download and save those movies like the others.

also get a few emails from surfers a week asking if the movies are downloadable, before they sign up

also dialup users totally get fucked if you don't let hem download and then play

TheSaint 05-04-2005 08:05 PM

DRM is like th nuclear option - I will not be the first to use it. If all sites were DRM, fine, I am on board.

In the meantime watermark every video, and don't worry about it. Yeah there is some sales loss, nothing you can do about it. Better to have higher sales and some pirates than no theft and low sales.

Makes sense, thanks.

Correct sire.

Members wanna jerk long after they cancelled your site, and post your shit all over the net. So make sure it's watermarked, and in a way hard to remove.

Let us know how your chargebacks work out.

:disgust

I am open to just watermarking. Makes sense not to over-protect.

Tat2Jr 05-04-2005 08:38 PM

Watermarking is the way to go. I even seed kazza with my videos. I somehow get less then 1:100 on my index page traffic.....hmmmmm...... I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I've NEVER produced a single picture or video that didn't have my url/logo on it in the last 8 years.

I know that password protection wasn't what you were talking about, but ask around about Strongbox if you're not using it. I'm just a user of it, and have tried the other solutions. I, along with 99% of the other Strongbox users are walking billboards for that awesome software.

FTVGirls 05-04-2005 10:19 PM

Another solution... load your site up with so much high quality video that it would be hard to put it all on one hard drive, let alone post it on another site, and if there is trading via kazaa, all the better.

Happy members, and better retention haha

eisbaer 05-04-2005 10:25 PM

Have a look at strongbox (www.bettercgi.com) as they have a option in there that protects your content against downloading with automated Site downloaders. So the surfer can download the pictures and videos, with a right click as usual, but if the start to rip your entire site, they will be blocked.
Thats a good compromise I think as the people will download your pics and vids anyway and this is fine with me. But people ripping the whole site is another story.

Yup. Just put an intro/outro on all your videos and shit. Bangbros style with like 4s of intro is what im talkin about. I bet bangbros gets a ton of sales from filesharing even because, eventhough theres a ton of bangbros stuff being traded around, thats some HIGH QUALITY SHIT and some people, even freeloaders, are prolly willing to pay for it when they see the videos.

:2 cents:

bigdog 06-03-2005 05:04 AM

you can always just stream your videos and offer any downloadable options
