Banned countries

We have some strange activity on our promo server (fhg, fhs, etc.). Bandwidth was +300% for last 7 days but signups volume stay as week ago. As 1st idea ? we ban shitty counries, who never pay just watching and eat bandwidth.

Just a guess, but perhaps your marketing is off a bit Ed / CzCash?

Sounds like good traffic just little or no conversions...

Later,

.

Robo 10-06-2007 03:54 AM

That's good that I do not promote you :)
But you should ban .CZ too ! Will be 50 !

DjiXas 10-06-2007 04:05 AM

Add LT (Lithuania). Lots of fraud there.

quantum-x 10-06-2007 04:12 AM

Ban what you can't market to or process for, interesting technique.

u-Bob 10-06-2007 04:30 AM

be sure to mention that in your TOS.

Marshal 10-06-2007 05:58 AM

there are some countries on that list that CAN pay for watching. imho, it's not so good decision...

voa 10-06-2007 06:28 AM

Man another place where my country is banned(Macedonia-MK).This is too much why you banned whole country when you have a problem with just 1-2 person.

Actually we have 2 servers, and 49 countries from this list watch promo from cheap server, located in Europe. We just try split people who really pay from people who just watch and go to password sites after watching.

For more than 7 years I have 0 (zero) sales from Macedonia. Do you think this is not a rule?

You mean via dialer or something like NoCreditCard.com ? We use GXBill and some phone solutions for these 49 countries but actually we have calls only from RU, CR and TH.

Casa Nova 10-06-2007 11:07 AM

Interesting thing to do.. it's smart in a way, and not at the same time.. I'm still trying to decide.. lol

sniperwolf 10-06-2007 12:50 PM

wow! those are quite huge number of banned countries... :(

woj 10-06-2007 12:50 PM

why not just analyze the log files to see where the extra traffic is coming from?

StarkReality 10-06-2007 12:56 PM

TR (turkey) is missing on the list, loads of fraud !

Phil 10-06-2007 01:03 PM

Israel. never had one from israel.

Why 10-06-2007 01:07 PM

turkey, malaysia, indonesia, india, china, mongolia, russia, belarus, vietnam, chambodia, myanmar, thailand, singapore, etc.

RawAlex 10-06-2007 01:11 PM

If you are running a program that can only bill to CCs, then yeah, you need to be blocking out these countries. If the end users can't buy, why give away samples?

wateva 10-06-2007 01:16 PM

all asian countries banned.....................quite a list

Hey there Ed, our global phone billing solution delivers 100% global billing reach for all countries as these realtime stats bear witness : http://www.password-by-phone.com/realstats.php

As you can see, the payouts vary from $.50 to $10 depending on the surfer's country.

Hit me up anytime with questions.

I agree.

TeenCat 10-07-2007 11:46 AM

why you better not track what are those 300% doing on your server? you can target better what to ban and what not :2 cents:

peterk 10-07-2007 12:27 PM

That is a big list

prezzz 10-07-2007 12:43 PM

Well, there's another problem with blacklisting those countries.
There are many worldwide webmasters who can try to promote your sites
on different markets (US/UK/Western Europe - by submitting galleries,
placing your FHGs on their TGPs etc.). By banning them from your servers
you practically tell them to go away...

bobby666 10-07-2007 02:45 PM

youve forgotten usa

You mean, webmasters from China? TGP owners from Egypt? Linklist owner from Vietnam?

carders from turkey? Traffic theives from... wait, some of those are from the US.

The Judge 10-07-2007 05:20 PM

Why the negative approach? Instead of banned countries make a list of countries you allow, should be no more than 12.

What he said.

Also, redirect based on IP.

I am a webmaster from one of those countries you banned.
Good thing I do not promote your program.

GrouchyAdmin 10-07-2007 07:09 PM

Jeez, processing an array for an IP's GeoIP country for all traffic is just about as wasteful as the freeloaders. It's a small enough list. Load the GeoIP DB and your banned list into SHM and just 403/redirect based upon that.

Actually, you could do that almost-natively with mod_geoip, now that I think about it.

Code:

<IfModule mod_geoip2.c>
  GeoIPEnable On
  GeoIPDBFile /usr/local/share/GeoIP.dat

  <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
      RewriteEngine on
      RewriteCond !%{ENV:GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE} ^US$ [OR]
      RewriteCond !%{ENV:GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE} ^CA$
      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.google.com$1 [L]
  </IfModule>
</IfModule>

Yeah, that should do it.

bDok 10-07-2007 07:45 PM

send that traffic off to some place. can do something with it. ;)

GrouchyAdmin 10-07-2007 07:49 PM

Oops. Just noticed my joke code (anything not US or CA) doesn't work. That [OR] is becoming a NOR due to my !test for CA. Take out the '[OR]'.
