NewBie with original content and No direction

I?m brand new to this site and the business side of this industry to be honest but found my way here never the less
I?ve been shooting pin up style photo/video for the last 8 years as a hobby (fetish) with no intent on ever making a career of it. But the last few months I?ve been drawn to the idea that I may have skills in this trade that could possibly pay the bills and get me doing what I?m so passionate about on a daily basis. I have been studying the content on the big sites relating to my particular niche over the years and watching them grow and evolve has given me a deep appreciation for the industry as a whole, at the same time its shown me my work stacks up to what they produce only they are making a living with it. I?ve amassed all the studio equipment already and have spent thousands on fetish gear and sets around the house. I have also got a few models on hand willing to shoot a couple times a week and finding more has never been a problem for me as I?m still young enough that I don?t look like a pervert :thumbsup. The problem is I have no idea where to start, thus my reason for posting here. I can supply exclusive content on a regular basis to anyone that can market it but reading through the posts here there doesn?t seem to be any money in it after all the costs involved to get the 100-200 pics and 30-60 min HD video you will get almost exactly what you paid for it (models ect). Setting up a site would seem like the right decision but then you need to spend months of time and thousands of dollars just getting the content you need to open the doors of your site for the first time. It looks like a closed door trying to break into the adult industry but at the same time if you look just under the surface you see people making it with a lot less you just cant seem to find them to go for a beer and talk about it :)
I have great respect for you guys and the trials and tribulations you must conquer on a daily basis to succeed in this game.
Please don?t flame me, I?m praying someone may have something positive to say.

Chris 10-30-2007 12:53 PM

you can make money by selling content
do exclusive and non exclusive

if you dont think you will make money doing exclusive content then you need to rethink your pricing structure so that you do make money

we are not here doing this for fun. We do this to make money so tehre must be money to be made =)

as far as you saying it will take thousands just to open your pay site

well ..it takes money to make money in this game bro

but keep up the good work.

How about selling non exclusive content packages? can easily make your money back and then plus some :)

DigitalDruid 10-31-2007 09:56 AM

Im tossing the idea around to sell semi exclusive content till i can have someone build me a turnkey site then move everything there. But what constitutes "semi" exclusive?

as far as taking thousads to open a pay site. the MOST expensive part is the content. If you already have that and it is 2257 compliant, then you just need a design and processing.

DigitalDruid 10-31-2007 10:47 AM

Thats where im at right now, Looking for a turn key site to put it all on, But i dont have content enough to start with.Thats where the thousands and another month will come from.

Listen to this man as he is spot on.

The hardest part is done. Content. You need a site, processing, and to learn some promotion tactics.

But it will still take hard work. Time and money.

DigitalDruid 10-31-2007 11:09 AM

JOKER 10-31-2007 02:49 PM

Looks like you've got the right attitude and motivation to get things going in the right direction - and understand, I barely say that to people.

It's good to see some newcomers with obvious potential :thumbsup

Read more - figure things out mostly on your own, learn the rest of the skillset and most important - make lots of good contacts, be wary though as there are many bad apples in this business and you don't want to find out the hard way about it :2 cents:

I'm sure we'll hear from you again in a little while, either joining the ranks of the high-end content producers or with your very own exclusive pay-site :)

Keep it up!

GAMEFINEST 10-31-2007 03:01 PM

hard work , good contacts, and dedication...

If you've never done any web stuff before, setting up a site can be a daunting task.

Plus, running a business can be difficult too. You also have to worry about marketing, keeping good books, etc.

You should partner with someone who knows what they're doing.

The folks at aWiz have a really affordable CMS, and they provide complete template design services for pretty damn cheap. I've been happy with their work and I'm sure you could work something out with them.

Also, setting up an affiliate program is expensive.

good luck with it

After Shock Media 10-31-2007 11:12 PM

rapmaster, do you have a few minutes?

Oh original poster, I will gladly talk with you and point you toward any info you may need. Only motivation is the possibility you might make it and I get another contact.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-31-2007 11:13 PM

SO post some samples.

ztik 10-31-2007 11:18 PM

You could start your site bassicly for free if you have the content

You could jump start your biz alot faster with some big people behind you. Try to do this on your own from a start and you have alot of rough work ahead of you. Have someone help you and study and watch then break off on your own. To do that you'll need to post some samples though

L-Pink 10-31-2007 11:26 PM

Another important task. 2257 ... Please do searches and read the current requirements. Specifically the parts about your companies place of business and hours of operation required each week.

Seriously, for a single person content producer/site owner this really sucks.

calibra 10-31-2007 11:52 PM

Hi and welcome! And post some samples.

L-Pink 11-01-2007 04:36 AM

bump .....

L-Pink 11-01-2007 07:47 AM

Gompo 11-01-2007 07:51 AM

SilentKnight 11-01-2007 03:04 PM

We've been in the bdsm/fetish niche for over a decade, producing our own original content and operating several financially successful paysites.

Sounds like you've cleared the first major hurdle - investing in your gear, models and having your content.

The next obstacle is marketing it and gathering momentum. And that'll take a lot of time and effort. Getting together with a knowledgeable and experienced partner is a fast-track, but can easily lead to problems and frustrations farther down the road if/when a power struggle takes place. My advice is be VERY careful who you choose to partner up with if you decide to go this route. There are a lot of not-so-ethical people out there more than willing to take you for a ride and unfairly capitalize on your hard work.

Take some time and learn how to build your own paysite and get some affordable hosting (we currently use www.canaca.ca and have found them to be excellent and reasonably priced).

Check out Verotel or CCBill for processing.

Get some reciprocal links going with as many other quality fetish-oriented websites as you can. Get involved in TGP promotions. Join forums that cater to bdsm/fetish photographers and webmasters and make contacts. Consider attending and exhibiting your work at conventions such as FetishCon (Florida) or Bondcon (Vegas). Market yourself with the same enthusiasm you have when shooting the content. Work on building a respectable search engine ranking. Develop a unique style or brand for your work - try and come up with an angle no one else has already done a thousand times.

Its all in the momentum. It ain't gonna happen overnight, though. Aside from the monetary investment, it'll take time, diligence and perseverence.

And as the chorus says - post some samples.

DigitalDruid 11-02-2007 02:23 AM

My icq is up and running, Thanks for all the help guys. Im working on samples but didnt anticipate the 2257. Im in canada and my lawyer never mentioned doing them aswell as the release forms he made for me. Dont want my first screw up to be on my first post is all.

kmanrox 11-02-2007 05:11 AM
