I just rarely hear the word switch used that way unless your actually talking to someone about the light switch. However not when you are asking them to turn it off. Though I have heard some people say flick too, though very rarely.

Well, the rules tell us not to end a sentence with a preposition.

So, turn off the light or switch off the light are preferred.

Many people use the terms...

"Hit the lights" - Meaning either turn them on or turn them off. Can be used either way.

"Kill the lights" - Meaning turn them off.
