How to promote a new site?

Hi there,

I'm new to GFY. Actually I'm new to the whole adult entertainment industry, so I registered here to learn the ropes.

I have been thinking about starting a site for years and a few weeks ago I finally decided to go for it. I whish I had made the decision a few years earlier, but hey. So I got the legal paperwork sorted out, bought myself some content I liked, built a site, created a CCBill account and then I thought I was ready to make some money. Wrong...

Do you have some tips on how to promote your site? At the moment I try submitting galleries to TGPs and that generates some traffic (even a lot of traffic after submitting to the hun). But traffic doesn't pay my bills of course.
I also submitted to some review sites, but so far it's still under review, so I can't tell yet what impact that would have on my sales.

Do you have some advice for me?

It's also possible that the site is just not well built for generating sales. If you like to give your opinion, you can find the site in my sig and I can also send you an example gallery.
Or is it normal that your site first needs to survive some time without members before getting noticed?

Cheers,
Rokkon

Print up some flyers and put them on windshields in the walmart parking lot.

What's your niche?
Why should they join your site?

You should really answer those questions before you proceed any further.

Thanks for the replies so far.

My niche... So far I added solo girls in nice lingerie or cute socks and so. Is this too general? I was thinking about something in the direction of MetArt, but still different.
Why should anyone join? Because it are nice pics at a low price. Is this concept too 2001?

Putting flyers on windshields... Why haven't I thought of that? Too bad there's no Walmart around here

Niche: Beautiful Solo Girls
Style: Artisic, Nice shots, Softcore

Is that the feel you are going for? When you say different - What's the defining element?

I'm not sure I really like the layout. From the main page its unclear - what its about.

That would be the goal, yes.
At the moment I try to make the best selection, but it's sometimes too explicit to my preference. The idea was to first make some money with bought content and then move on to more stylish exclusive content...

Different in what way... I would like to put more focus on the clothes the girls are wearing before they strip. And it will definitely be smaller to start with. I would like to update more frequently, but I can't afford multiple updates per day.

Suggestions for the lay out are more than welcome. The index page is indeed more like a warning page. Maybe I should add more information on it. Probably my tour needs some tweaking too...

Thanks for making me think it through, simmeon, it will be necessary...

I am new to the business also, all i can say is good luck. I am working my butt off and don't expect to make much in the first year. I'm doing tons of research on generating traffic, hope things work out for you.

I'm not sure how much content you have on your site but as far as your site not really being well built for generating sales goes but do you think that joining an AVS might help with that a little bit?

I'm not sure how the AVS model is doing right now and this might only really make sense if you don't have much content to work with.

hmm, very softcore stuff, you need to find the softcore tgps, babelogs and email the webmasters directly

before you do that, prepare lots of QUALITY FHGs, then email them asking nicely if they want to promote your site, here are the ready made fhgs if your interested..

Thanks for the tips!

I'm not so sure about the AVS stuff. I'll have a look at it, but I wasn't a big fan of it before and I doubt I will become one now. But thanks for pointing it out.

So far I mostly submitted to nylon/stocking TGPs, I will look for softcore/babe TGPs and blogs. The only problem is that the license for my content doesn't allow me to use it for FHGs, so it kinda limits my options...

I'm also considering starting a blog myself after reading some topics about it. That way I can maybe start generating some revenue and promote my site while also promoting some of the bigger ones.

Hmm, yes, I think you can call it that...

I thought that was normal with licensed content...

Tough business to start in... I'll need to think some things through and read a lot...

I would really start with a blog, I can only imagine driving traffic to a paysite will be a challenge, plus the constant demand for fresh content. - it must expensive. Do you have a decent budget to continue?

Yep, I agree. I started a blog yesterday. This time I did some reading first, so hopefully it will work.

I have some budget (I still have a day job), but that doesn't mean I'll keep investing in a site that has small chance to succeed. I'll see about that. I still have some content waiting to be published, so I can keep the site up for a few weeks without extra cost (only effort).
I'm gonna focus on the blog, maybe start a second one and I'll try to guide some traffic to the site gradually.

And the rare free moments I'll use to read some more, visit the educational series, ...

thats not an unusual starting attitude in porn lol

simmeon was hitting on the main problem - you dont competently achieve your site goals.

good content at a fair price? its not unique or exclusive content, so what is a fair price for non-exclusive content? VideoBox has 115,000 non-exclusive scenes for $15 a month. that is a pretty fair price. you cant compete on value if your content isn't exclusive.

porn is all about the numbers. the more exclusive your content, the lower traffic numbers you need to convert a visitor. low budget start-ups think the best plan is to buy a bunch of non-exclusive content, post it up for a low price, and guys will buy. its just not true. there is a limited number of actual buyers, and they have all seen the "bought" content.

if you are small start-up, your best strategy is actually to shoot (or buy) exclusive content. find something that interests you and figure out how to do it better. then shoot (or buy) it.

you don't need 100 videos to start a paysite. you just need 1 video and a good pay-per-view cms. a lot of PornCMS customers even started their businesses on sites like clips4sale. 1 sale leads to 10, and 10 sales leads to the next shoot. when you have enough money you post another video and email your newsletter list about it.

a small start-up cannot compete on the subscription model. pay-per-view is the only way to go..

I haven't considered the pay-per-view model yet, just because personally I don't like it (from a customer point of view).
But of course: 100 people can have 100 opinions, so I'll keep it in mind for possible future use. Thanks.

And yes, I realise I made several mistakes with this site. Let's call it progress, learn from my mistakes...

as a customer you prefer spending $30 to get into a site that has less than 20 videos? guys would rather pay a couple dollars to only get the videos they want. the only exception is with mega sites, like MET or videobox, which your site is not.

we have a few dozen sites using ppv now and they are all growing. the membership sites are all dying. except the gay sites. they always grow.

No, I agree. Maybe I didn't express myself well (I'm not a native English speaker). What I meant was that PPV sites never caught my attention while surfing, so that I really didn't consider the option. I'm not saying it's a bad model and I will certainly consider using it in the future.

No prices listed is a walk away now thing for a lot of potential customers anywhere.

Oh, is it?
I checked a few other sites and almost none of them listed prices anywhere except on the CCBill page. I thought there was some logic behind that...

I'll change that one of the following days, thanks.

i mean the way you've got it with the buttons and % off but with no numbers saying what the % is off

most places say something like instant credit card access which leads to the ccbill form and leave people to work out the saving for themselves

How long are you going to stick with this project? 1 year minimum. When have you predicted to breakeven on the content you bought.? How big is your advertising pot? If you can manage it maybe buy custom content.

What type of site do you have? Show Us URL.

Just in case if you want to test your site, to see the ratio you site will have, you can try to buy some high quality ad traffic for test purposes. If you want to do so, I would recomend traffic from Ero Advertising. They have really good traffic in all niches, with really good GEOIP filtration and anti-cheat system built-in.

But I recomend you to work on buildind SE traffic, or traffic from other sources.

Didn't read everyone elses suggestions BUT

1. Scrap the layout, it almost looks 90s style ugh
2. Scrap the layout, its not clear where you are going when you are clicking
3. If you are going cheap, it should say 6.99 or whatever on page1,2,3,everywhere! Make sure they know this. Currently I didn't notice the price until i clicked pay, then on 30 days then finally jeez i see how cheap it is... nobody even makes it that far do they? ;)

4. Try setting up affiliates on a PPS if you need sign ups but dont want to sit around fucking around.
5. Buy some exclusive content and use that for your preview pages... you can keep the crap you bought on the inside as the filler but get something that only you will have on your landing page.

I could go on and on...

Thanks for your honest feedback, brentbacardi.

By now I realise I made a LOT of mistakes with this site...
I'm currently focussing on blogs, I hope I took some better decisions there. At least I did some more research before the start.

I need to evaluate if I want to continue with the pay site. If so, I need to change a lot and I will remember your feedback.
