Apache streaming video

What do folks around here use for streaming video?

I've done some preliminary research on the topic and found mod_h264 and mod_flvx, no idea though how robust those solutions are.

We have had great luck with the two mods you are speaking about, however for a larger scale solution check out a Wowza server.

i used both they work great you should also use either lightty or nginx to save on bandwidth and to help prevent hotlinking

Thanks for the comments guys. Nice thing about mod_h264 is that it's open source and could be expanded on if needed.

Ngix looks like it could be useful for preventing content scraping to a degree as well. I'll check out lighttpd and see how that can help us too.

you can set like this.

apache on port 80 serving website.

lighttpd on port 81 serving big files like videos.
there are modules for lighttpd for stopping leeching of content.

thanks

I think this might be the prob I need to solve too. I say 'think' as I'm totally new to video content. After crashing my server twice with a fairly small numbers viewing a 200mb FLV video at 2500kbps, I discovered the limits of self-hosting My providers put in nginx and I moved the 2 high traffic videos off site linking as unlisted or public content on other sites. The latter is a 'get out the shit measure'.

My operation is very niche with very few users, so my needs will be modest. Not sure I can post links yet but Googling my name will get you there fast, so you can get an idea of my site.

What suggestions would you have for my higher demand videos? How can I reduce load? Is there something better than FLV? Any advice on compile settings for best balance between quality/load? What good solutions are there for moving some videos off site (a couple of dozen) or all (around 100 with capacity to grow to a few hundred)? If there are any useful links that already answer these questions, it would be appreciated.

Is there somebody offering this as a service already set up suitable for small operations or is this something that would be set up on my existing server?
