Stealing my bandwidth.. What do I do?

So my first site is up and running.. I have had 23,104 hits on one of my tour videos and 45591607 Kbytes of bandwidth used... 2 other tour videos are similar. But only a few hundred visitors...

I have only been talking about the site here on GFY and do not have an affiliate program or outside marketing plan yet... So I am guessing someone here on these boards is hotlinking my vids.. Perhaps to a tubesite. How do I protect against that?

Hi newdipshit, you could block them from your .htaccess file by enforcing hotlink protection and only allowing your own site to access the file direct, also by ensuring that the files are stored somewhere which is not accessible within the normal domains then ensure your video player / viewer is pointed to your internal folder, this would stop most attempts to get your content.

The line for your .htaccess file would be

Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?yoursite.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp)$ - [F]
This would block any attempt made by an outside site to access anything on the denied list of extensions, if you have more than one site just keep adding condition lines.

Although if you were going to be offering an affiliate plan then it's your choice if to allow people to hotlink your content or if they need to host it themselves

Hope this helps

http://ip-address-lookup-v4.com/ip/24.20.83.236

Now this is approximate.

It looks like a nice house out in the rural areas of Oregon City, Oregon on South Ferguson Terrace right at a 90 degree right hand curve.

Take the co-ordinates from that page and search them.

Just block the IP, pay attention for a new one.

well... if it has streamed 22,000 times and not led to a single conversion, I would say it is not the kind of traffic I want and a total waste of bandwidth... Wouldn't you?

So much to learn.....

Are you using cpanel?

Look for IP Deny in the cpanel menu of your hosting.

That is only a band aid though until he acquires a new IP.

That may just require a simple modem reboot to do.

There are actually some that are better.

1 I use is no longer on the market, it gets you to most demarcation points on the side of the users building, which is likely why it was pulled from the public marketplace.

As I said though the web based app there is approximate and does not always take into account any (2 to 24 or more in some cases) recent reallocation's of IP address.
