What about the right tool for the application... Most here are webmasters so it would be kwel if the box supported webpage development. Would you use your laptop for the Macromedia Studio 8 Suite? Add MS Office Pro, soft firewall, strong wireless ability, take the load of good antivirus software (Laspersky) plus the host of all the other typical webmaster tools and still run at a reasonable speed.

Better add a large HD (160GB?). Any available that spin faaster than the typical laptop models I see (5400 rpm)?

Oh, DVD RW too.

Really looking for a portable workstation I guess.

of course TOSHIBA!

I've had good experience with two Toshiba models. my Sony Vaio lasted forEVER and got beat to within an inch of its life but kept ticking, but that was an older 1998 model and I haven't tried the brand since then.

Everything I read about laptops in the Consumer Reports magazine leans toward IBM(aka Lenovo) and Toshiba as being the most reliable, highest quality laptops with good customer support.

(and yes....Apple is usually in the top three if not #1 in the CR lists, but he clearly mentioned in his first post that he does not want an Apple.)

How did you miss out IBM? I bought a cheap IBM X20 on eBay for next to nothing and it's one of the finest, slickest, most-lightweight laptops i've ever owned!

I have a 12 inch averatec... but I only bought it because it was small and cute. Is that wrong? They didn't have the 10 inch at the store or I might have gotten that one. I like to take it everywhere so I like for it to be small and light. I could practically fit this thing in my purse.

Mr. Romance

Well, I did kinda fuck up the poll and leave a couple of key manufactures out... I didnt know IBM still made laptops because I hadnt heard anything about them forever and a day... didnt know Toshiba or Fujitsu did either... and prolly alot of the "other" votes are Mac people cheering for Apple...

I saw IBM had a 7200 SATA drive avaliable as an upgrade... I wish they made SCSI in laptops, alot of SCSI drives have 10K spindle speeds... though it prolly would be quite loud.
