Don't forget that although he has plenty of money to pay the 40K a year medicial school tuition, his wife is instead using student loans which she is going to have to pay back herself. Said wife, smart enough to be a surgeon in any field she wants also signed a prenup that among other things includes her not getting any part of his existing fortune and also having to pay him alimony.

My take: FC had a first date with somebody who's in med school, his brain is too small to understand what a medical career really looks like. He realises he's in an position inferior to hers and feels proud to have been close to a person who is obviously going to rank higher on both the socio-economic scales in his community and the scale of intelligence.
