nice choice, hits the spot tonight

here are the first 5 songs (live versions) from my own playlist (my favs)

From a great concert New Years Eve 1979 (aka Winterland altho there are several years of Winterland - always confusing with the Dead :) ) that was televised on PBS a while back.

I like every version from this concert. Some from this concert were the best versions ever imo.

Tough time tho finding songs from it or the actual whole concert.

I was able to see the Dead play live scores of times mostly because some of my friends were hardcore Deadheads who always had lots of tickets (and lots of drugs, lol), and the Dead played locally a lot in the Bay Area - often for a week at a stretch, especially for New Year's.

My favorite local shows were at Frost Amphitheater (Stanford Univ.), and Shoreline Amphitheater, just because I like dancing outdoors, and the many memorable New Year's shows ("I may be going to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoying the ride"...) - I was at these shows too (I think, hehe):

...and the most epic Dead show I ever attended was the US Festival in '82 - Breakfast in Bed with the Grateful Dead:

Really nice. Couple of may favs, Stevie and Pat B at that concert in their prime. Especially Pat B in 1982.

Man I remember the mid 80's. I was studying BS and wasting my life away. I should of went west in the early 80s. :) Back then we thought it would go on forever, no hurry. Wrong! :)

But yeah, some good stuff you have seen (and smoked lol) and heard :thumbsup

Purty purty cool town to grow up I must say :)

Sug mag is def a great song and nice version there. Came out in 1975 I see.

I was only in my later 20s in 85 so you had to be a young hellion of about 18-19 in 85 :)

I think Bob Weir says it just came out, so since the vid is 73.. maybe it came out in 73.. anyhow who cares. lol

WE the deadheads care. :) Anyhow. I cant know it all and I admit I am a bit behind on the dead but really like their stuff.

Jerry was the man.

12 shows is awesome :thumbsup I have been to maybe 6-7 major concerts in the day and ya never forget moments. Some "is just a haze" lol as Grand Funk said in my first concert in 1974. :)

Santana
Uriah Heap
Grand Funk
Jethro Tull
I actually forget a couple more lol
Maybe ZZ, Maybe Rush :) This is going on 40 years ago. I was a minor. :) Minors dont really care who is playing lol
Rod Stewart lol but he doesnt count, that was a babe taking concert :winkwink:

I was a loooooong hair in 74 for sure, for sure. :)

I made Ozzy on Survivor look butch lol

brassmonkey 10-29-2011 09:35 AM

never listened to that stuff

Vjo 10-29-2011 09:52 AM

this you (maybe) listened to brass :)

Actually in the day the Dead did not get a lot of national air time on AM or FM radio and never really made the charts much so some of us really were not exposed. You have to seek them out I guess.

BTW I am still awake, wtf :) i took a nap from 2am to 4am tho :winkwink:

Is anyone cooking burritos? :) Isnt that what all us deadheads cook and eat. :)

All you need in life is a shower, a fatty, and a big tasty beef burrito with all the southern cali extras.

Oh my goodness gracious :rasta

extra cheese and onions and heavy on the gauc, hot sauce :)

Vjo 10-29-2011 10:35 AM

Touch of Grey is the ultimate counterculture song and when it blasted across America in 1987 it was fantastic.

Full of electricity and prob the GD's best song ever written.

Vjo meet Donna Godchaux! She played with Band during 72-79. Love her or hate her she was on stage doing her thing. She was on time in some and could make my skin crawl in others....Speaking of looking further....check out what some of the boys are doing with "Furthur" that or Dark Star Orchestra, closest thing you will see to a Dead show going right now. I have seen both of those bands and had my socks knocked off. Blew me away!!!

Jerry Garcia was a good visual artist in his own right. He was an accomplished painter, and also designed clothes - I have a few Jerry Garcia ties (which I wore during my corporate years).

Jerry loved jamming and playing music of various styles...

HIGH-ly recommend to check out the Further concert tour...Weir-Lesh and Co, will be doing three nights of shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for New Year's in San Francisco this year - just like the old days, minus a few loved ones, but with a whole mess of 2nd and 3rd generation Deadheads... :)
