NASHVILLE ? Authorities say a 4-year-old boy grabbed a loaded gun at a family cookout and accidentally shot and killed the wife of a Tennessee sheriff?s deputy.

Investigators say Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning on Saturday was showing his weapons to a relative in a bedroom of his Lebanon home when the toddler came in and picked up a gun off the bed. Sheriff Robert Bryan says the weapon discharged, hitting 48-year-old Josephine Fanning.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The child is not related to her or her husband.

Bryan says the shooting was a terrible accident and that within seconds of Fanning placing the gun on the bed, the toddler picked it up.

I can guarantee you the guy called himself a responsible gun owner. I can guarantee you that he claimed unresponsible gun owners are the problem.

I love these posts that try to "prove " something for anecdotal evidence. Meanwhile, swimming pools and cleaning chemicals kill WAY more kids than guns do.... Where are the laws to ban those?

That would be a start. An arrest and a charge of criminal negligence should also be on the table. This idiot is about as far from a responsible gun owner as it gets. Sorry, nothing wrong with displaying one's arsenal to others, but laying out loaded weapons with small children nearby and then being such a distracted idiot that he couldn't prevent the kid from getting close or even noticing he was in the room is... well, just plain moronic on a very special level.

Yup, if the 4 year old didn't have a gun he would have found something else to kill that woman. The fact that she is dead has nothing to do with a gun.

People make mistakes. Accidents happen. The kid could have just as easily walked in a room, stuck something into a wall socket and been electrocuted to death. Instead an adult made a poor judgement call and the kid accidentally shot someone.

If this happened every day it would be something to worry about. But it didn't.

There are much worse things to worry about than legal gun owners and accidents, such as criminals and crazy people with guns. And since Pandora's box can't be closed, guns are not going away, so deal with it or keep crying about it. It won't make a difference either way.

If guns were legal here i'd worry way more about the tons of non criminals walking around with guns. WAY more.
I'd take 1 criminal over 100 non criminals with guns any day of the week.

My family was big into hunting when I was a kid, and during one Christmas celebration my cousin (who was in his thirties) brought in a new shot gun. Much to everyone's surprise it was loaded... My step father physically kicked him in the ass as he pushed him out the door.

its too late for america but yeah, the less legal guns in a society, the less illegal guns there are as well. its much harder to smuggle a gun into a country than it is to obtain a previously legal gun illegally thats already there. also, the more armed a society is the more armed a criminal feels he/she needs to be.

Yup the number one cause of dismemberment and death for infants and toddlers is motor vehicle accidents. Apparently guns are a bigger problem than morons texting/speeding/running lights with their children in the car.
