Guess the feds really hate the Tea Party

I have to ask, why would asking for a non profit status get the ATF and OSHA involved and a visit from a Congressman?

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepa...nment-n1791240

"My life before I spoke out for good government stands in stark contrast to the life I now lead. As a wife, a mother, and small businesswoman working with my husband, raising our children and participating in my church and PTA, the government collected my taxes and left me and my family in peace. But when I helped found and led True the Vote and King Street Patriots, I found myself a target of this federal government," she said. "Shortly after filing IRS forms to establish 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) tax exempt organizations, an assortment of federal entities including law enforcement agencies and a Congressman from Maryland, Elijah Cummings came knocking at my door. In nearly two decades of running our small business, my husband and I never dealt with any government agency, outside of filing our annual tax returns. We had never been audited, we had never been investigated, but all that changed upon submitting applications for the non profit statuses of True the Vote and King Street Patriots. Since that filing in 2010, my private businesses, my nonprofit organizations, and family have been subjected to more than 15 instances of audit or inquiry by federal agencies."
Engelbrecht was audited by the IRS, ATF and received multiple visits by OSHA and ATF.

"I found myself a target of this federal government," she said.

For those liberals that STILL think this is a non issue, remember the Democrats won't always be in charge, if you got politically active, this could happen to you!

People should have the right to complain about the government, if you disagree, please leave my country!

Posting so this thread has my little icon next to it and I remember to come back to read the awesome replies and infographics.

I have friends to whom this kind of thing has happened to in the last 3 years. No one believes that this happens until it happens to them... And then it's too late.

are you talking about when it did happen? cause it sounds like you don't know this was happening to 'liberals' back in the day

Rochard 02-07-2014 12:54 PM

Not enough information - in fact, too much information is left out. What was the name of the business they claim was targeted, what kind of business was it, how long have they been in business, why were they audited, what was found when they were audited, and what was the end result?

Based on what little information presented in that article... Here's my spin.... Family ran a business, eventually got audited, maybe because of a red flag or maybe just because, the IRS found issues, they broke laws, law enforcement was called, they complained, and then someone from Congress picked it up on their radar.

My wife's charity is fighting with the IRS trying to keep their tax exempt status. It never even dawned on me that our government might have audited me as well two years ago because of my wife's connection to the charity. I just assumed it was an audit.

Did it ever occur to anyone they got audited because they got audited. I mean, when I get pulled over I don't think to myself "I'm getting pulled over because we have a Republican sheriff".

What makes anyone think they were targeted at all? Could the IRS associate a business account with a charity group? Maybe they were just breaking the law and the are tying to complain hoping it will all go away?

Best yet... Look at the comments on that page. Sure Vendzilla, you are an Independent who just happens to read such sites.

I knew some of this was happening and didn't agree with it then, why should any one agree with it?

Did you have the ATF show up at your door? NO
Did you have OSHA show up at your door? NO
Sorry, your example doesn't come close

What's scary is all the excuses for this will be posted in this thread, it's comical.

If you run an organization complaining about taxes of course they are going to look at you. And if you are constantly complaining and saying you shouldn't have to pay of course there is a higher risk of you being a tax cheat. People like that tend to push their filings to the very limit and sometimes then some. It's called being a tax protestor.

So why the visit from the congressmen, the ATF and OSHA?

They are not getting all this attention just because they are a tea party group wanting a nonprofit status! Their actions have brought on the scrutiny they are facing!

this group is under investigation for voter intimidation in multiple states. they want to act like a PAC, but not disclose who their donors are, hence trying to get nonprofit status

A Travis County district court judge ruled this week that a Houston-based tea party group is not a nonprofit corporation as it claims, but an unregistered political action committee that illegally aided the Republican Party through its poll-watching efforts during the 2010 elections.
The summary judgment by Judge John Dietz upheld several Texas campaign finance laws that had been challenged on constitutional grounds by King Street Patriots, a tea party organization known for its "True the Vote" effort to uncover voter fraud

No what is scary is there are people like you out there, whom run around finding anything they can find in order to cherry pick things to fit your little agenda. You never require any proof as long as it fits your agenda as it's instantly 100% correct with out question. However anytime someone questions you, you start calling them names and there is never enough proof in the world that can show you as wrong.

Then when someone does prove you wrong and you know it, it's off to the next topic so you can ignore being proven wrong.

dyna mo 02-07-2014 01:48 PM

fuck Travis county! I got thrown in the pokey there once. or twice.

Please note: Never argue with Vendzilla. The man is a true genius and every thing he ever said and ever will say, is 100% bonafide pure fact. Every morsel of irrefutable information this academician shares provides an invaluable benefit to all mankind. If you don't believe me, just ask him and he'll confirm.

No, no, no, and no. None of those things ever happened to me.

However, I've noticed that some people are just a magnet for trouble, and trouble seems to follow them no matter where they go.

Years ago I went to court for a ticket, full felony stop; I've mentioned this a few times on GFY. I was speeding (and that's an understatement). This was on the 10 between Socal and Phoenix, where high rates of speed are common in the desert. The lady before me had the same exact ticket, was crying, offering up all kinds of excuses, more or less threw her paperwork up on the judge's desk.... The judge nailed her to the wall. I'm thinking my goose is cooked, judge asks how I plead, "Guilty, sir". The judge nearly had a cow. The judge asked me to explain, and I just told the judge I was in fact exceeding one hundred miles per hour when I was pulled over, and that I had no excuse. My ticket was dropped down to one point on my DL and a little $120 fine.

My point is these people had a simple audit, got caught skirting the law every chance they got, got the book tossed at them, and tried to fight it every step of the way. Eventually local law enforcement got called because they refused to produce some kind of a document or failed to show up for two many hearings, they discovered a treasure trove of firearms - we already know your stance on the 2nd amendment - and then ATF gets called in and they got to their place of business to locate a missing firearm and notice dozens of health code violations. And so forth.

Fifty percent of all people audited are Republicans, the half Democrats. And some of those Republicans and some of those Democrats a ignorant, arrogant, and believe they are above the law. The more they piss people off, the more trouble they get into. You don't even know if the IRS called the ATF or the other way around; You just assume they are connected even though you can't draw a line between the two.

It's simple. Once a government agency discovers enough dirt, they keep digging. And the more they dig they more they find.

Maybe they got nailed to the cross because they violated the law over and over again.

Rochard 02-07-2014 02:37 PM

I love the comments on that page too.

"This administration is the most lawless in recent memory, including the Nixon administration. "

I guess memory loss includes stealing an election and then tricking us into a war while getting rich on oil profits and Haliburton.

that Bastrop jail is the shitter. Was running with a gal at UT while I lived in Houston, I'd get antsy about an hour out of Austin and tended to floor it.

Travis County took my picture
But no, I didn't smile
They told me I was gonna be here
For a pretty long while

LOL, No, I post facts and let the idiots say they are wrong!

It's sport really!

I mean someone says that the Tea Party is under investigation?

Really, which chapter? Because they are independent from each other! Which is the biggest thing the liberals have against it, they can't attack the character of each office, there are too many of them

Why does a congressmen visit them?
Why does OSHA and ATF visit them?

Yes apparently they're under investigation , I mean that's the OP, some people I guess can't read?

The IRS admitted targeting conservative groups
The IRS apologized to those groups
The IRS gave the donor list from those conservative groups to liberal groups.
The head of the IRS took the fifth and has YET to make a statement.

Anyone that think this is business as usual needs to really rethink their medication needs.

The IRS targets lots of groups. They don't do it for political reasons. They do it because certain groups have a track record of fucking over the IRS.

The IRS shouldn't be sorry for doing their job.

Without more information we don't know, all we can do is make assumptions based on not having enough information about this specific instance.

As I said before in another thread, that you seemed to abandon, you are always quoting from opinion pieces of far right blogs ... and taking that as a news report or a true fact ... You lose all credibility by doing this...

As for your ATF question :

http://www.examiner.com/article/arme...treet-patriots

Quote:

Armed Citizen Project addresses the King Street Patriots

Kyle Coplen founder of Armed Citizen Project spoke at the May 6, 2013 of the King Street Patriots. He opened with the mention of the organizations members? attendance in noticeable numbers with their even more noticeable bright yellow shirts.

Mr. Coplen was a well accredited young man with the appearance on possessing the drive to lead this fledgling organization to national status. The premise of the theory behind the organization is the opposite of the liberal gun free zone which is a gun saturated zones. The organization has offered an entire neighborhood pump action shotguns if they complete a gun training course. The groups? primary function is gun training at this time but as funds allow they will increase the offers to more neighborhoods. The neighborhoods that are armed will also be publicized with signs announcing the area as a gun rich zone. The groups? theory is that gun rich areas will result in few crimes in those areas and they intend to keep statistical data to prove their theory. They also would like to increase the numbers of gun advocates to increase solidarity between citizens.

ATF ..... :2 cents:

I'm impressed, you seem to be the first person with an actual answer.
I didn't know about this stuff, the question still comes up why OSHA and a Congressmen showed up at their door.

The op wasn't about the Tea party, it wasn't about the IRS, it questioned why the government is sending every federal harassment they can at a Tea Party chapter.

And no one has answered why Lois Lerner took the fifth and later resigned from her post as IRS Director of Exempt Organizations...
