FYI in Sweden and in many other european countries the price for gas is TWICE the amount you currently pay. So stop your crying and be glad its as low as it is.

Yeah, and in Sweden and so many other countries you have social health care and a gamut of other government programs that the high gas prices help pay for. We don't get anything for our high gas prices except fucked. So in reality, it isn't low, ever thought of that genius?

I heard a little story on NPR about how many Canadians come to the US for health care, because the wait and service is poor in Canada. And yes, I realize that NPR is a fascist / socialists / some rag of a news agency. But whatever. I just thought I'd post that, because hearing is believing.

Yeah its really fun to pay extremely high taxes on everything but not really get alot out of it. The money goes to retarded people who cash in on healthcare. For many jobs its better to be on healthcare then to actually work. How retarded is that?

Yeah sure we enjoy what we get out of the tax money.

He said European countries. In any event, the system in Cananda may or may not be true, I haven't spet a ton of time in Canada except to party and gamble, but I have spent a lot of time in Sweden and know that their healthcare program is pretty good.

Its the same here, waiting lists are huge and there just arent enough to deal with it all despite out extreme tax load.

Whether you enjoy it or feel that you are getting a good deal or not isn't the issue. The issue is that in reality our gas prices aren't low like you think. There is a low more that goes into comparing the prices of gas in Europe and the United States besides the price at the pump. :2 cents:

The point is, the high prices you pay are mostly taxes that go into helping your country and its people live better lives through social programs.

The high prices we pay are pure profit for the oil companies.

Theres no way to aruge that man.

Off topic, but....

I'd like to live in Hawaii. You need a solid web developer under your wing?

Exxon keeps posting record quarterly profits... what, like a million a day or something?

The gas price cap was just liften in Hawaii, so now gas will be even more outrageous, don't forget your moped. :)

Yeah, all the oil companies keep posting HUGE record profits. I think last quarter one of them posted a $9 billion profit, for one fucking quarter. It's insane. I must be in the wrong business.

Yeah, except Bill Gates make most of his money on a daily average on paper with stock fluctuations, the oil companies make their money consistently in cash profit. Big difference. :2 cents:

Alex 05-07-2006 10:36 AM

On top of the government services you get for free:

Sweeden is 449,964 km squared in area while California alone is 410,000 km squared.

1/50. One stae of our entire country is equivalent to your whole country. We need to drive further to get to work, school, shop, travel then people in your country do.

On top of that, someone posted before that the average engine size of cars in Europe are 1-1.5liters.

The average here is well over 3.0

I am being serious. A lot of Bill Gates net worth is in stock, which obviously he can't liquidate unless he wants to fuck over his company and a lot of people, not to mention the SEC hoops he'd have to jump through to do so, if at all.

But, if you were more referring to his salary, then you'd be wrong. His salary in 2005 was $600,000, and he received $400,000 in bonuses and $2,469 in other compensation. So total, INCLUDING bonuses and "other compensation," his salary was just barely over a million dollars.

Here is a link to Microsoft's 2005 Annual Proxy Statement incase you don't believe me. :)

I agree with kandah to some point. I think you U.S citizens would react the same way if your gas was double the price of European gas. It should be more expensive in the U.S, you got Bush to thank for your prices.

so why hasn't alternative fuels like bio-diesel cough on in the U.S then?
probably there's more money to be made in the oil/invasion business, thank Bush again.

No. Really. You or Chio need a solid developer under your wing(s) ?

Kind of kidding, but not. I'm kind of tired of Colorado and really would like to have a shaved ice stand on the beach while moonlighting as a web developer. If you know of any contacts, places to look, let me know. Really.

To add to Shoehorn!'s post, Bill Gates is also in a commodity that doesn't directly relate to a nation's infrastructure. Yes, it'd take time and tons of money teaching people to use Linux and Open Office, for example. But the investment in using an alternative to oil / gas is completely insane. Thus the reason you don't see countries going to war over software.

Shaved ice is good, I could go for some right now actually. Will your shaved ice stand be open sometime in the next few hours? :)

Webby 05-07-2006 11:41 AM

OK... The thread was about gas prices.... but then hit to the wealth of Bill Gates, the standard of healthcare in Sweden and sure as hell it will hit on 45 other subjects before everyone gives up. :pimp

Anyways.. fuck gas prices and Bill Gates. I'm gonna continue on the healthcare topic.

First.. Sweden's healthcare system is not that bad. People who pay for it may moan, but it is ranked 23rd in the world rankings by WHO.

It's also odd that a "third world country" can provide excellent healthcare (and extensive colleges of further education) than several "first world countries".

Costa Rica is not exactly a "wealthy" country, but maintains a standard of healthcare comparable to the US but at a cost of a fraction of that of the US. (Generally $250/year for a family of four - including all dental, maternity and other stuff).

To put this in perspective a little more, the US is not near the top of healthcare rankings, but currency ranked 37. Costa Rica is currently ranked 36.

For stats freaks - here's the WHO rankings to fight over :pimp

1 France
2 Italy
3 San Marino
4 Andorra
5 Malta
6 Singapore
7 Spain
8 Oman
9 Austria
10 Japan
11 Norway
12 Portugal
13 Monaco
14 Greece
15 Iceland
16 Luxembourg
17 Netherlands
18 United Kingdom
19 Ireland
20 Switzerland
21 Belgium
22 Colombia
23 Sweden
24 Cyprus
25 Germany
26 Saudi Arabia
27 United Arab Emirates
28 Israel
29 Morocco
30 Canada
31 Finland
32 Australia
33 Chile
34 Denmark
35 Dominica
36 Costa Rica
37 United States of America
38 Slovenia
39 Cuba
40 Brunei

I'd throw down a bunch of acronyms, but that's a bit lame. I'm trying to learn Java for heavy lifting, but primarily use PHP for the basics. My site's are in my sig, and I did ten.com (plus other stuff) for the company I work for. I was sort of joking when mentioning I'd like work, but not really. My former college roommate lives out there; a guy who's going to be in my wedding in a few weeks. I grew up 30 minutes from the ocean, San Mateo. And these days I'm generally weighing my options about how to work on my own. Your "location" mentioned Hawaii and from this board you seem close to Chio, who's one of the few people I've never met yet kindly regard as someone I'd like to. Yea, that last sentence was pretty gay. Hahaha. Anyway, that's that.

Ideally, I'd have a shaved ice stand on the beach with a decent wifi laptop connection to facilitate working when business is slow. If I didn't have a flavor that was requested, I'd have a supplier / destination to provide it. Watermelon would be the biggest seller, next to strawberry and pineapple. The selling point would be "The best freeze you ever bought" and would have custom, wax-coated paper cups that might have a dude doing a caricature of the buyer on the cup before it was filled.

Hahahaha.
Anyway. Thanks for letting me write down my future business plan.

Let's carry on to stuff that's more "on topic", as I don't want to disrupt GFY threads with useless banter.

Yeah Chio is a good guy. There are definately a lot of opportunities in Hawaii. If you'reserious about wanting to move to Hawaii you can email me - [email protected] - and I'll try to answer any questions you have about it. It's probably best to email me, because like you said, our personal conversation is taking away from all the hardcore business threads here. :1orglaugh

Well you could buy Exxon at $60 a share: http://tools.thestreet.com/rmy/quote...OM&sid=&timer=
That way even if you buy their gas, you're still going to reap the benefits.

Gasoline prices in Canada and the ratio of tax: cost of gas: http://www2.nrcan.gc.ca/es/erb/prb/e...x=686&oid=1130

"In June 2005, taxes averaged 36% of the cost of a litre of gasoline in Canada. Consequently, tax is one of the largest components in the price of gasoline. Gasoline taxes can vary by province, and in some cases, regionally. Taxation often squeezes the room for refiners to raise prices, especially in highly competitive markets, where price wars may result in the oil companies having to absorb a tax increase from their portion of the retail price."

Gas taxes in the states, in cents per gallon:
http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/st...tate_2002.html
http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/im...state_2002.jpg

Current 2006 fuel taxes in the US:
http://api-ec.api.org/filelibrary/St...elTax42806.pdf

Now tell me again that US gas isn't taxed and that's why it's more painful to see high prices.

Egomancer 05-07-2006 12:17 PM

I want war between US and EU for the oil!

Period!

Thanks...

I'm starting to see a lot of Smart cars around Vancouver, and tons of hybrids.

Funny how CNN posted an article saying that hybrid sales in the US have stalled, with lots of Prius' and whatnot being left on the lots longer than 90 days, but in Canada there is a shortage. I guess you guys haven't hit your "that's enough I can't take it anymore" price point yet.
