My fucking apartment complex caught fire, animals died, a person died... and

This has to be the most stressful day I've ever had.

It smelled like somebody was BBQing something gross and long story short.... The ppl under me had their apt catch fire from a faulty wire from the fridge to wall, so mine was about to go if a neighbor had not called the fire department. They only figured it out when the looked at all of the North Windows and that apartment had melted blinds, owners not home so they busted in and that place is charcoal and those poor people lost two dogs. I have some smoke damage and not allowed in my apartment until tomorrow because the carbon minoxide level is too high so they let me get a small back and run a wire from home to the neighbor which didn't catch as much as the fire was RIGHT UNDER MY FEET.

I'm starting to believe in God more than anything now. If that lady had not called, I would have slept through it and been dead myself (yeah, some of you want me dead but that was truly the scariest shit I've ever been through.)

Once they busted out the window and then got someone with a key...... the smoke can steaming out and all of us on the second floor were hurling..... This started about 5-6 hours ago. I can't go back home. They opened all of the doors in this unit and my cat got out but I'm sure she'll come back.

I don't know why the hell I posted this, I'm just stressed out. THE FUCKING FIRE ALARMS INSIDE OR OUTSIDE NEVER WENT OFF, ONE NEIGHBOR SAVED THE DAY BY CALLING! My indoor and their outdoor alarms didn't even go off when the smoke was so thick that mine and my neighbors eyes were watering so bad we couldn't see as they were forcing us out ASAP.

I saw the apt downstairs, it's all black...... It came so close to coming through to my apartment. All of you might hate me but someone loved me tonight because they put it out in time.

They walked around with a little oversized Ipod looking thing that gave carbonM reading and mine were 45-50 so they won't let me back in tonight. I as so scared, I'll be the first to admit I was in a bush puking. I was sure my apartment was gonna go up in flames next. Hell, they had 5 fire trucks and countless cops here.

I want to go back home and I've already been told the smoke damage most likely trashed my furniture etc, but where is my cat?

When they came a knocking I ran out like hell fire. 2 Hours later a fireman walked me up to the apartment and gave me 1 minute to grab what I needed. (PC, Meds, Phone, Phone Book).

ANY OF YOU THAT ARE FIREMEN OR KNOW ONES...... GOD BLESS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

angeleyes 04-14-2007 01:12 AM

SORRY about the spelling, I'm still a little upset.

Humpy Leftnut 04-14-2007 01:13 AM

Well, second thought, I have almost burnt my house down twice.. One time I left a stainless steel kettle on the stove, went to school, remembered maybe 45 minutes to an hour later and had a stranger in my class drive me home.. I just got up in class and yelled WHOSE GOT A CAR.. lol.. Teacher let us go ;)

When I got home it was glowing orange, the whole thing, and going TING TING TING TING.. no water left.. It was winter so I put my sleeve over my hand, grabbed it and threw it into the snow.. It was so shiny, and then it was so black...

The other time I woke up in the AM and it was freezing, so I went downstairs and cranked the thermostat up.. Went to have a shower.. went to school, totally forgot.. Came home many hours later at 4pm, opened the door not expecting anything, and WHOOOOOSH the hot air hit me, rushing to get out.. Everything was wavy inside because it was so hot, you could see the heat.. I struggled through it, turned the thermostat down and aired the house out..

I melted the wires on the furnace, and we had to buy a new one.. heh

Believe me, I have made some very positive advances in my life, but (and I willl get railed for this) I'm going back to church. This wasn't a little kitchen fire, their apartment is gone, done, dust. I live just WHAT? maybe 3/4 a foot above them? I feel dizzy because I (like a dumb ass sat in the hall and argued with the cops because I wanted to get my cat out of there). No more damage then the dammed smokes do I'm sure.......

I'm a........ I don't know what to think. The blinds were actually melted to the fucking window downstairs. And it was a connection issue with this place, I want to unplug my frig and shove it off my balcony.

Humpy Leftnut 04-14-2007 01:26 AM

Everyone has their choice, but I think you need to look inwards for your answers, you won't find them in a church! You might find them at the museum or art gallery though. ;)

KrisKross 04-14-2007 01:29 AM

That's insane. Glad to hear you got out safe. Hopefully you'll be able to find your cat.

D 04-14-2007 01:38 AM

Wow. Stressful, indeed.

If you feel you need to go to church, go... if people have issue with your faith, fuck 'em... if they're harassing you, they most likely throw it at you in the first place because of their own insecurities on the subject, ya know.

Your subject mentioned that a person died... maybe it's just the hour, but I didn't catch an explanation of that tidbit in your post. So, was everyone (minus the dogs) ok?

I'm sure your cat's just freaked, and will turn up in a day or two. A cat's sense of smell is much better than a human's, and I'm sure it knew something was awry.

Good luck to you in getting it all straightened out.

Mr Pheer 04-14-2007 01:47 AM

Misspell away.

You have earned that.

:2 cents:

Ross 04-14-2007 04:02 AM

Thats one thing I'm paranoid about...my house catching fire. Sometimes lying in bed I wonder if I switched everything off so I have to get up and check. My younger brother lives with me as well and when he comes home drunk and makes food I always have to go down to make sure he turned everything off.

A couple times he's left the oven on or the grill on. Just as well I check.

Glad you are still with us and sorry you lost so much in the fire. Atleast your alive!!!

Hope your cat is ok!

GT-Omar 04-14-2007 05:17 AM

Wow truly horrifying experience, but glad to hear you are ok.

angeleyes 04-14-2007 08:49 AM

Thank you to the few that replied. I'm back home now. Again, I'm not the one that had their entire apt go up in flames... that was directly downstairs. I just got smoke damage..... screw it, I have ins. The cat is still missing. To answer your questions: There was an elderly lady next door that inhaled too much smoke and coded on the scene and was taken via ambulance away--I was told she did not make it, but I don't know, the dogs are definately gone and everything in our entire building smells disgusting. The Fireman ran up and saved a baby and the Mother took them to a hospital to get him checked out and are keeping him away from here because the levels are still here, but if you have a place to stay other than the place the fire started, that is obviously where you should be. (Especially with an infant). As for my dumbass, I just inhaled a bit too much arguing with the guy about going to get my pet out, but all I did was throw up into a bush about 10-15 times. (I have to think that was more stress related).
The police did go up to my place to try and find the cat after they opened all the doors, so that was a nice gesture, but she isn't home yet. :(

The guy that owned the apt just came knocking on everyones door to see if the we were all okay. He's put togther way better than I would be!

GOD BLESS the neighbor that called before all of the units went up in flames. I was talking to everyone lastnight and we all smelled something off, but just thought somebody was burning something on the grilll near the lake.

I offered the couple that lost everything anything they need... They did not have insurance. I am hoping the red cross will help as well as considered buying them a puppy in a few weeks after the trauma hey suffered is further away. Or is that mean?

So fucked up.................. Words can't describe it.

Sorry to hear about the fire, glad to hear you are ok! :thumbsup

stev0 04-14-2007 09:57 AM

Glad to hear you're ok, but it has nothing to do with church. You have a neighbor to thank, and i'm pretty sure she wasn't hearing voices from god.

On another note... maybe god was trying to kill you by disabling your fire alarms and your neighbor saved you? j/k.. just saying :)

woj 04-14-2007 10:36 AM

ouch, that sucks... :-/

BlackCrayon 04-14-2007 10:38 AM

sue whoever owns your building if the alarms never went off.

DatingGold 04-14-2007 10:43 AM

Me a slut? Thats rich. And to be quite honest, after what happened last night it put shit into perspective and people like you that name call and act like pre-schoolers are about as important to me as the shit sitting in my cat's litterbox. Grow up.

I'm gowing downstairs with the rest of the community to help the family that lost everything clean up and burry their dogs.

To the rest of you. Thank You. I'll be back later. I'm gonna probably go to a hotel, the stench here is overwhelming.

shekinah 04-14-2007 11:10 AM

now I appreciate the fact that it's better to be robbed once than lose your own entire house:(

angeleyes 04-14-2007 02:41 PM

Update and last message on this topic: Too much smoke/crap/whatever creeped up here that I lost my voice, my throat hurts and the property manager came and checked out my apartment and I'm moving into a hotel temporarily on their bill as all of their corporate apartments were booked up. I gave the neighbors a couch to keep and some clothes for the wife..... The entire community pulled together to help them out and they are settling in a brand new apartment as I type this.

To respond to a few posts:
- I'm not going to sue because the alarms didn't go off, I'm just glad to be here.
- Yes, I've been robbed before and that was horrible, but after you go through something so devistating that hits close to home (my neighbors), it really puts crap into perspective. I was broken into 5 years ago and they stole my computers, cameras, cell phone, etc but that crap was replaced. I can not imagine losing almost everything and your family pets.
- Last but not least, I heard those dogs barking and I'm kicking myself in the ass so hard for not looking. I just figured they heard my door slam shut and it set them off. Hope there is a Pet Heaven. :(

Thanks again everyone. If any of you live in South Florida, the Family needs just about anything (items not money) if you have anything you want to give that is just laying around collecting dust, hit me up and I can arrange it. I have a list of their needs.

OH, AND KITTY CAME BACK, SHE'S SICK BUT SHE'S BACK AND GONNA SEE HER DOC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Randyyy 04-14-2007 02:43 PM

dude that sucks, are you ok??

Seriously, read this again and again...where does god come in?

Dirty F 04-14-2007 02:50 PM

A person died and animals died so that means they did bad things and god wanted them to die?

borked 04-14-2007 02:52 PM

that's really shitty - sorry to hear it and hope you get back to your place asap

I'd sue the complex owners for dodgy smoke alarms...

Dirty F 04-14-2007 02:55 PM

Why would god let the fire start in the first place?

So he lets a fire start and then makes that woman call 911?

Or the fire isnt gods work but the woman calling is?

YES, I just inhaled too much of the smoke and have a sore thoat/cought and the smell is hell. I'm finishing up packing up for 2 days.

And to the other guy that posted many times. I don't understand why shit happens dude... I just know that I would have been burned to death too if someone had not called as we all talked and smelled it but thought it was the BBQ or the drier vents that pile out in the hall of all places. I don't care if I have to thank the stars, god, the police, fireman or anyone else, I'm glad to be here. I saw first hand how close it was to throwing my place in flames.

My concern right now is with the family that it happened to and to get out of here because I am for whatever reason getting very sick. I'm just waiting for my CC I left at a friends house to get out and my apt is fully reimbursing me.

Shit, I said the last post was my last. lol I just wanted to say thanks again and answer the questions asked of me. I'm done initiating posts. I'll get in touch with you guys from the hotel.

Ssv 04-14-2007 03:22 PM

Thank God you are ok!!:thumbsup

You are very lucky.

I spent 5 years in the Fire Department. It could have been a lot worse for you.
