So my daughter finally asked the dreaded question...

'Mommy, do you believe in Santa Claus?'

ugh

I told her I believe in all things that are good. I then asked her if she believes and she said 'I don't know, let me think about it.' LOL she is 8.

Yep, this was the start of awareness...I am preparing for the big ones to hit soon enough.

oh and Happy Holidays, HO HO HOE. :upsidedow

Rochard 12-26-2008 12:27 PM

My daughter is also eight. There was no talk about Santa being real or not this year around. It was nice. She just knew that Santa was coming to town.

The tricky part was getting the presents into the truck for our trip down to SoCal. We just put them in a big box and figured we'd tell her that it was some stuff we borrowed from Grandma if she asked.

CaptainHowdy 12-26-2008 12:27 PM

Allow me to be a little bit radical and think that your little daughter only believed in Santa in order to keep you happy, heh...

pixovore 12-26-2008 12:28 PM

Good luck with this, not that easy...

Sly 12-26-2008 12:29 PM

Santa Claus is an idea... not a person. I believe. :-)

Dirty Lord 12-26-2008 12:30 PM

Say for her "i believe in Santa Claus and i love him"

John-ACWM 12-26-2008 12:31 PM

Sweet. I bet you have a lovely family. Congrats!

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
By Francis P. Church, first published in The New York Sun in 1897. [See The People?s Almanac, pp. 1358?9.]
We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor?

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ?If you see it in The Sun, it?s so.? Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O?Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men?s or children?s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that?s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby?s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

My little one figured out the Santa deal by the age of six :( it was a combo of older kids around her (pricks!) and catching mom putting gifts under the tree.

BUT, the best one was the following....

On her 7th year/christmas there were presents under the tree that said To: _______ From: Santa, she grabbed the first one of them and just started laughing, got up and ran into her mom's bedroom, she came back with the roll of wrapping paper (that matched the "Santa Gift" and she said....

"See THIS PROVES IT! There Is No Santa, YOU and DADDY are really santa!"

So now she's Eight, knows there is no santa, tooth fairy, great pumpkin etc... BUT she is STILL hellbent that the EASTER BUNNY is REAL LMAO

My older sister told me there was no Santa Claus when I was pretty young (don't remember my exact age), but I was already a quick enough thinker to tell her not to tell our parents, or we might not get any more gifts from Santa...

the lies that society tell you starts the moment you are born... it is a great preparation for real life though :drinkup

A few years ago I was talking to someone from here at GFY (I don't remember who), and he was jealous that his ex-wife gives their kids more than he can. So he told his kids that Santa was fake. All in an attempt to impress them that he bought more for them that year than their mom did. He just couldn't live with Santa getting the credit for the toys he bought.

NaughtyRob 12-26-2008 03:37 PM

I thought you were gonna say the "do you work doing porn?"

SmokeyTheBear 12-26-2008 04:10 PM

Grapesoda 12-26-2008 06:31 PM

I got sooo lucky last year.. there was a typical santa picture set up in the mall but these guys had it dialed ... they had an ear piece and walkie talkie .. the lady would come up to the parents and ask them some questions ..their kids names .. do you have a pet .. whats its name .. what color is your house .. how many kids in family .. what they wanted for presents etc.. simple and easy .. the kids would go up and he looked excellent .. real beard .. the whole deal .. he would greet them by name talk with them a bit about their pets and what they had asked for .. fuck my 11 yr old shit his pants .. "holy crap dad .. that was the real one .. Wow .. I really thought you were pulling my leg .. " .... it was awesome .. I couldn't thank them enough ..

Now THAT'S an awesome thing for them to do.

uno 12-26-2008 07:11 PM

I don't think I believed in Santa since I was 4. My parents wouldn't let me tell my 18 month younger sister until she was 10 or so. OR ELSE!
