Navy seals romped those pirates asses to shit
I am glad Obama gave em orders to shoot to kill if needed :2 cents: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009...rican-hostage/ Arlington, Va. -- Captain Richard Phillips is now safe and healthy aboard the USS Boxer after Navy Seals launched a rescue attempt that ended when snipers killed three pirates in three shots, all direct hits to the head. Vice Admiral William Gortney, Commander of Navy's 5th Fleet, told journalists at the Pentagon Sunday evening a decision was made to take the shots after the pirates were spotted pointing an AK-47 into the back of Captain Phillips. As soon as the shots were fired, Navy Seals "scurried down" a tow line attached to the lifeboat, and were the first to get to Phillips. They surveyed the scene and found three dead pirates. Phillips was alive, although tied up. The fourth pirate, who is now in U.S. custody, left the lifeboat hours earlier with the understanding he would negotiate from on board the USS Bainbridge, the massive Navy destroyer that shadowed the lifeboat for several days. It soon became clear the younger pirate was simply turning himself in and had no intention of going back to lifeboat, according to defense officials. Shortly after the Seals reached Captain Phillips, a Navy RIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) approached the life boat and safely escorted Phillips back to the Bainbridge. He has since undergone a medical exam and had the chance to take a shower. According to Admiral Gortney he's healthy and unharmed. The scene got "tenuous" according to one official, shortly after the three pirates agreed to let the Bainbridge tow their boat. The sea conditions were worsening and the lifeboat was "floundering" before pirates acknowledged that by establishing a tow, it would be a smoother ride. But sometime soon after the boats were hooked together, shots were fired from the lifeboat and the pirates were seen holding a gun to Captain Phillips back. Acting on a standing order from President Obama to move in when Phillips was in "imminent danger" snipers were ordered to fire. They established clear head shots on all three pirates. One of the pirates was visible through the front window, and the other two were revealing their heads through the top hatch, presumably to get fresh air. It would be their last breath. It was an extremely happy ending to a story that doesn't often end well. Just last week the French lost one hostage after their Navy raided a hijacked sailing yacht. Admiral Gortney left with a warning that today's outcome could lead to more violence in future hijackings, perhaps in the form of retaliation for losing three of their own. |

i don't understand how pirates can take over such a massive ship.

They have weapons, some of which could be dangerous even to a ship. People on board such ships typically do not have weapons - something about safe passage rules and stuff. Huge body of water everyone is using with way to many ships to protect even a majority from possible attack. |
Proud of my Navy SEALS sniff.. sniff

What we need is a President with balls.
These pirates fired off mortals at plane with a US official on it, and then promised us that the United States is now "enemy number one". We should go in there with guns blazing and take over the country. Let it be known that if anyone fucks with the United States, well, their entire country will pay for it. |

I like how these pirates are pissed off that something like this happened to them. What the fuck do they expect when they storm on ships and take hostages? Seriously. Now they are all butthurt and acting like the US did something fucked up.

There was no other choice in this situation and it was handled the best it could, but when you hear the details, it's not as awesome as it sounds.
The pirates shot were 17 and 19 respectively. Their boat had totally lost power and they agreed to have the U.S. destroyer tow them back to calmer waters. The third pirate actually went aboard the destroyer to collect supplies and have a wound on his hand stitched up. So basically two teen age pirates where shot while aboard a powerless boat while being towed by a U.S. destroyer. These pirates were obviously clueless and had no military training, or any training whatsoever. Like I said, there was no other way to handle this and the innocent hostage was secured alive so it was a victory. It's just the whole thing sort of feels hollow. P.S. The reason the pirates can take over a big ship is because the captain and crew are told to not engage the pirates or fight the pirates in any way. That's also why they don't hire security or carry guns on the ships. These pirates are bumbling idiots. During a recent ransom payment, several drowned when their tiny boat capsized while trying to pick up the money. The only reason they can hijack ships is because the crews have orders to not fight back. |

40 yard headshots, not even a challenge to the SEAL snipers.

The sad thing is, we went there on a humanitarian mission to help them. Somalia has no government, its a state of anarchy and the one with the most guns is the leader for the moment. The pirates are thugs and there is no government backing them, and no government to stop them. |

They are not really told not to engage the pirates, they do have water cannons they can attempt to use and have. They just are well people working on a ship and under the assorted international maritime laws/treaties/etc. are not allowed to be armed as ports do not allow in armed ships. The pirates are about the same as the underage drug dealers we have in the US with gangs. They are young, uneducated, poor, take all of the risk, and are funded by others. Then of course they get to keep next to nothing in our terms (30 US a month is a lot in that country for many on the coast). So you just have assorted warlords taking advantage of the situations, in essence their country is very much like a US ghetto. Just on a much larger scale - take a few blocks out of Detroit or whatever shit hole location in the US and expand it to the size of their country. Of course using the military to go in and take out the assorted warlords who are funding the pirates and controlling all of the assorted shit happening in that country would of course accomplish nothing more than a warm feeling for all of a few weeks before that vacuum was refilled by new warlords. We see how well it works here with how we deal with city gangs. They will begin to adapt. The one that got the huge payoff was the insurance that this will only get worse - not blowing the skulls off of three pirates. Other countries and people showed them that what the were trying works at least some of the time, and now at least one tribe/clan/whatever has millions to work with and that buys a lot of poor ass kids who will risk everything along with a boat to put them in. |
