thats it.

at the end of the day its as if he thumped a blind kid.

he made a few jokes about stars.

if you come to the uk, this type of stuff is on all the time.

i think many in the usa are far too used to everyone saying to each other how great they are.

i have noticed a few usa film stars do not get it when being interviewd. they are too used to being told how wonderfull they are. but in the uk we rip people to shread and the film stars love it.

for example dame edna, and many others humiliate there guests, but they love it.

i think this type of comerdy is not somthing people are used to in the usa.

Hugh Hefner just tweeted a few seconds ago:

"Jokes about age will begin to seem lame as we all begin to live longer, fuller lives."

Mr. Hefner is obviously not amused at the Gervais' antics last night.

i have seen a lot of usa stand up, and its not that good.

the sitcoms are fantastic, but stand up is just all the same.

even when somone does some good stuff they just repeat the same jokes, such as emo philips, each time i have seen him its the same gags each time.

i have seen the usa roasts which seem to have started too in the uk, but its not as sharp to me.

we have for years mocked everyone and everything. we woulkd burn the union jack for a giggle. this is not somthing you would do in the usa.

what ricky did was great. he pushed the bounderies. to bew honest there are many uk comics who would consider that mild, and would be far more insulting and ruder.

just stop posting you have ZERO idea what you are talking about, if you did you would know that chris rock and billy crystal both hosted awards ceremonies and insulted the crowds, albeit they were funny whereas gervias last nite was not.

moreover, the following is a short list of american comedians who's schtick is to insult

* Andrew Dice Clay
* Billy Crystal
* Bob Hope
* Don Rickles
* Fred Allen
* Jeff Duran
* Redd Foxx
* Greg Giraldo
* Kathy Griffin
* Sam Kinison

Actually, i agree with divvy but then american stand-up is very different to the British style, Brits are much slower and its more like hearing stories while the american style is much, much faster. I'd much rather listen to Lee Evans or Al Murry than any u.s. stand-up.

EDIT - i mean i agree that i'd prefer to see UK stand up, not the bit about shock comedians

do you mean bob hope the londener?

you will be claiming charly chaplin and Stan Laurel were american too. he he.

but glad you recognise the british are best.

its nothing to be ashamed of. chances are your originaly from britain.

you do not need to be defensive, we (the british) are best after all. lets face it when we ran countries they were great. we even set your america up. its a shame when we handed it over to you lot, you put it into trillions of dolloars of debt. but do not worry, simply admit your wrong and we will rule you again and sort your debt out.

ps

tv = british
www = british
everything great = british

true

i think usa sitcoms are great. i think many are far better than uk ones. we have had some good stuff such as peep show and farther ted, but to be honerst i think many usa shows are just better. i love taxi, cheers, frazer as well as the cartoons such as king of the hill and so on. fantastic. plus while we do 6 shows at a time they make maky in one go. its often so well done. i can watch married with children over and over. and classics such as sergent bilko.

but usa stand up is crap. once you have seen there act, often its repeated.

i have seen chris rock doing stand up. love him in films, but as for as stand up, its dull. and billy cristal is bland.

by the way one of the best usa shows i have seen is curb your enthousam. fatastic.

i consider laral and hardy the best. and abbot and cotelo two of the finest ever. in fact that basball thing they do is arsome.

i am not having a go at the usa. i am just sayingf stand up sucks, but the sit coms are amazing.

i think often in the usa it seems to be comerdy actors who do standup. they seem to go from doing tv shows or films to a bit of stand up. and as such things go relitivly easy for them.

in the uk, stand ups, are basicly stand ups.

ricky is one of the few that do both stand up, and sitcoms.

many in the uk have gone through a long haul tolearn there art. ie, they will have done many years in clubs (working mens clubs and so on) where they will get abuse from customers.

some got into it as they were also entertainers while in the army during the war (ww2) such as peter sellers. though he later became an actor.

such as benny hill went around the world to study it. he even tought himself french and spoke it perfectly so he could watch french acts.

i think the british do it more as an art form, rather than simply (as what i seem to see those in the usa do) simply read a few prepared written gags.

i do not think american stand ups come from a poverty backgrtound that many british ones do.

often through life british comedians suffer with such as drink, like tony handcock.

amercan stand up is rather middle class.

but as i say american sit coms are fantastic.

one of the best shows ever was the original muppets as it mixed american writting with the british guests (as it was shot in the uk).

I don't know why this is becoming a US v UK comedy arguement.

It's not that American's don't love a good joke at another person's expense, they do- especially when it's at the expense of a celeb, but all Gervais did was take pot shots.

Dragging up Robert Downey Jr.'s drug habbit is cheap. When he made his comeback he took his lumps, was the butt of more than a few jokes, but it's been years. It's old news. Even the Charlie Sheen joke was stale. As a one liner it was a decent quip, but to then go into the play by play of the hotel room incident which took place months ago is flogging a dead horse.

Fuck, after watching his opening I almost think a bottom feeder like Perez Hilton could do a better job. At least the ribs would be current.

I grew up on Monty Python, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnies, and I loved stupid shows like Keeping Up Appearances, Man About The House, and Are You Being Served?

To me, Ricky Gervais is a mean spirited prick. I still laugh at some of his jokes, but I don't feel good about it afterwards.

When you're watching him, you do realize he KNOWS he's better than you? He doesn't think it, he knows it.

I expect he's had more than his fair share of paid sycophants telling him he is the funniest person in the world ever and believed it.

thery are saying on uk tv he was great, and how the 'yanks' do not get it.

it reminds me of when that jackson girl showed a nipple during the american football. in the uk no one would have cared, yet in the usa it was the end of the world.

to be honest we used to only watch sport to see if some hot student would streak (run nude) accross the field. we used to complain if there was not a nude girl.

but i say this to point out that while we both speak english, culture is different. while we in the uk eat finew food and wine, americans eat burgers and coke.

to be honest we used to only watch sport to see if some hot student would streak (run nude) accross the field. we used to complain if there was not a nude girl.

but i say this to point out that while we both speak english, culture is different. while we in the uk eat finew food and wine, americans eat burgers and coke.
they may be fat lazy and stupid, but at least they're funny and brush their teeth...

I saw the clips after our UK media decided they knew what every American thought of it. And after checking on the interwebz I find that once again our UK press has it completely wrong.
From what I see, most of the celebs in the room might not have enjoyed it, but Ricky knew his audience wasn't in that room, they were watching from home and hoping for a good show, which is exactly what he gave them.

Lets be honest here, they didn't hire him to tell knock-knock jokes. They knew EXACTLY what they were getting. They probably even saw the material beforehand.

These celebs all take themselves far too seriously. And people like Tom Hanks and Robert Downey Jr have probably lost more credibility and support for their lack of being able to take a joke than Ricky has for making those jokes.

I thought it was very funny, and it seems the majority of the American audience found it funny too. The ones who didn't obviously have a stick up their ass, including the "holier than thou" celebrities in that room.

If nothing else I appreciate Ricky's attitude to Hollywood. He isn't blinded by fame and he hasn't changed to suit them. He is who he is (unlike the rest of the plastic army) and isn't scared of making jokes at their own expense. He's a part of that set, so he would be very happy to have some good jibes back. It's just a shame none of the other celebs taking to that stage had the sense of humor or the clever wit to take the piss our of him in return!

Sorry to be an arse, but if anything the majority of well known comedians in the UK go from stand-up to sitcoms and drama.
It's not new, they've been dong it pretty much since the 1960's.

I've never heard of him... Which is fine, as I didn't find his douche bag comedy to be funny.

Ricky Gervais is VERY funny, great to see him giving it out where the bland normally rules.

wrong.
several celebs fired back with the same sort of humor. in addition, de niro took it a few steps further and hurled insults at the wait staff. and i think daniel tosh would of been a much better and funnier choice for an insult host. hell even lisa lampinelli is funnier.

i have to disagree, but i do think its a cultural thing, the UK and american stand-up styles are just so different.

Never watched any version of "the office", even in reruns.. Dont watch self congratulating awards shows by celebrities, for celebrities.. because I'm not a celebrity.. Only seen the guy on interview shows and he seems to have a good sense of humour. Saw him do a few warm up rips on a few celebs on Conan I think. Was pretty irreverant. Evidently people didnt appreciate the "roast" quality of his jokes? Oh well. Boo hoo. Throw yourself on a pile of fame and call your bff.
