Canada moving to "metered" Internet service

This is really a bad idea. We already get screwed on our ridiculously-priced cell phone data plans and now they want to do it to our Internet connections as well.

Petitions usually do nothing, but I signed this one, just in case:

No politician will go for this unless they want to get lynched by the ever growing Canadian internet population...

What's wrong with it?

Heavy users pay more. Light users pay less.

Like every other service.

Sucks if you're a heavy user downloading Bit Torrents, great if you're a light user logging on to get a few emails.

Not really, the internet in Canada is already over priced as it is. I lived in Malta June 2009 till June 2010. Internet was 35 euros a month for 10mbit, quite pricey and it cut out like once a week for an hour.

In Canada, I pay $48 for 14mbit, cheaper than Malta, but it's only because I have a package for TV too.

In Scotland, you pay about $50 a month for 50mbit connection.

I don't know how Scotland can offer cheaper internet than Canada.

They won't make the light users pay less.

And the whole point of this is that Bell and Shaw are scared of companies like Netflix. Download all the movies you want for a small monthly fee, or pay $4.99 for a single movie on their competing Bell or StarChoice or cable offerings.

Basically you have a monopoly trying to keep things a monopoly by stifling competition.

Because Scotland is tiny and stringing wires and broadcasting across the Great White North is extremely expensive due to our relatively sparse population and hostile environment?

Just a guess.

I don't know... wouldn't the only people that get mad about this be the ones downloading 20 Gb of Blu ray movies per day?

If I use less bandwidth, why shouldn't I pay less than leeches that want to suck up everything they can download every second of the fucking day? I don't pay the same amount for my electricity that the local supermarket does, because I don't use as much -- why should the internet be any different?

Also, pirates don't like to pay extra for anything. I doubt they'll download all of those illegal torrents if they know it'll cost an extra 50 bucks a month.

Its already there. I signed up for Bell's "Fibe" service after getting fucked for being one of the first people to sign up for their DSL servince in 2000.

Ten years later, I start getting $60 overage charges. Hey! We'll be able to compete with the world as long as we have oil sands and baby seals to kill. Fuck the future!

Someone should pound the living shit out of this country before it dies from selling off its natural resources. Except for pounding out shit for American corporations, we completely missed the the industrial revolution. We still live off selling whale blubber, fish, and animal skins. Technological advancements? That's just a way for our pathetic monopolies to milk us for every cent we have.

There is no more backwards nation on the face of the Earth.

Shaw actually reduced their cap last month.. It used to be 125gb..
Then they shrunk it to 100gb, and will now start charging a per gb overage in April...

They want to continue making money with their 'pay per movie' and cable tv service, and reduce the temptation to use netflix (which was just introduced in Canada a few months ago...).
I don't think the average user knows how big a netflix movie is, and will worry that they might blow through their limit after watching a few downloads...

It's completely a cash grab - last quarter they had record profits:
"Shaw beat expectations on headline earnings before taxes and other expenses as well as revenue, which topped $473 million and $1.08 billion each for the quarter."

If you think 100 GB is heavy you're crazy. If you think $2-$3 per GB for overage is "fair" your crazy. Did have you ever have paid for hosting? Does it cost you $2 if someone sues 2 GB of data on your site? Hell no. And you're just website owner. Now think about a whole fucking ISP. No way does it cost them more than 10 cents per GB, to send 1 GB of data. So why are they charging 20X-30X that for overage?

Quote:
Like every other service.
If you honestly think that's how it will work you're crazy. Do you think ligheer users that are now paying $50 or more a month are usddenly going to have their bills dropped to $10-$15 a month to reflect thier light useage? HA!

Quote:
Sucks if you're a heavy user downloading Bit Torrents,
Not everyone using more than 50 GB is a illegal file share-er.

for example

Watching just ONE HD movie form Netflix a day = 75 GB per month
Watching just one hour a day of Hulu in 720p HD = 20 GB per month

Is this excessive? Major League Baseball has a streming package tha allows me to watch all my Rays games in HD on my PC. If I watch just one game a day that's over 100 GB in a month. How is that excessive? I'm paying over $100 a season and if I dare to use my subscription just ONCE a day I'm being excessive?

Say you have a family of husband wife 2-3 kids. Doing just normal stuff like watching youtube, Netflix, Hulu, playing XBOX 360 or PS3 online, listing to streaming radio is going to EASILY put you over 100 GB a month.

Quote:

Quit complaining. I pay 150$ US for 6 megs down which is normally about 4 down and 786K up. Its a business class DSL.. for anything faster is a 1.5 down and up for 1k a month

Petitions usually do nothing, but I signed this one, just in case:

Metaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. A metaphor is a figure of speech that constructs an analogy between two things or ideas; the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels".

Metaphor is or was also occasionally used to denote rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance (e.g., antithesis, hyperbole, metonymy and simile, which are then all considered types of metaphor). Aristotle used both this sense and the regular, current sense above.

Vote them out, replace them with people who better represent the people, it's called a democracy.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the world is moving to downloading digital content over the last few years. I have a box plugged into my TV that gives me iPlayer. (The BBC's VOD service). That allows me to stream BBC content to my TV directly. A 30 minute 'HD' programme is about 1.5 gig. I pretty much only use it of an evening, and don't watch what is being broadcast. I can easily, legally, do 10 gig a night. Then there is lovefilm in the UK or netflix in the states. They stream too. A movie would be about 3 or 4 gig. Oh and I get my other TV series from iTunes.

The world is moving to this model very quickly, so if the ISPs stifled this growth by metering the internet it would be bad.

HTH

I've never seen any overcharges on Shaw, and I am pretty damn positive I use well up and above 100gb/month. Maybe I just don't pay enough attention to my bills. Can you actually check your data usage somewhere with them? I just get my eCheck, and pay them out, seems to be the same old consistent charge. Shaw isn't hurting by any means.

I have a sprinkler system that waters my lawn. During the summer it runs 3 times per week. I take two showers per day. My wife takes one. My son takes a bath. Shouldn't my water bill be higher than someone living alone in a one bedroom apartment?

I don't understand why people get bent out of shape when they're asked to pay for what they use. If you can't afford the bandwidth, perhaps you shouldn't use Netflix. Really. If you can't afford fuel would you try to drive cross-country for a vacation?

Why do you think so many Americans are fighting against Obama's agenda? More bureaucracy = more control, less freedom, more taxes, less social divide.

But ZOMG, Americans have to buy their own health insurance, oh lord, they don't want to tax people making over $200,000 over 40% to spread the wealth.

hardly free enterprise especially in canada. Your post shows your ignorance of the topic. why don't you post how much YOU use per month.

So in otherwords ISP shoudl be able to meter like a utility? Then you should agree then they should be REGULATED as a utility then? Which the ISPs do NOT want. Can't have it both ways.

My gas bill if I don't use it is $6 a month. then I get charge so much per unit. Now if the ISP want to charge this way then they need to LOWER the cost of th basic service FIRST. but they don't want to they want to keep charging $50 a month PLUS overages. Sorry can't have it both way.

If the ISPs want to meter bandwith fine except

A) Base price has to be $10 a month
B) Overages can't be more than 50% over actual cost.
