I joined Netflix for a while because I wanted the streaming video...but their selection sucked. And they had no real library of classic movies. So went back to blockbuster and joined blockbuster.com

Now I pay $18 a month for as many movies as I want (2 at a time) and when they come up in my que they hit my mailbox the next day. Don't know how the heck they do it that fast with regular mail..but they do.

I get that from Netflix too. I think they have branches of the post office in their warehouses.

NetFlix rocks even more now that they have a Las Vegas distribution office
I've always liked them and have always had good support from them. They have a geart selection of documentaries and foreign films.

Redbox is going to put a hurting on both of them.

Netflix has been around a long time and eating at Blockbuster's bottom line. I remember netflx back in 03/04. Netflix had over a million members way back then. They prompted blockbuster to try sending dvds through the mail. Walmart also got involved and failed.

Redbox is going to put the nail in the coffin for Blockbuster. I heard blockbuster is going to try to do kiosks now . They always a day late with trying to keep up with the competition. Redbox already has a lot of the marker cornered for that.

Now if netflix can get everyone to subscribe and watch movies via the net and successfully ditch the by mail shit, then ultimately they will put an end to the kiosk boom that is happening right now.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Hard biz to get into with technology moving so fast and such a large upfront investment. In same cases your shit is obsolete before you have a chance to make your investment back.

Waiting for movies in the mail, and putting your want list in a que sucks ass. I'd rather get in the car and drive a mile to a redbox and get the new release movie I want right now for $1, you can't beat that. hands down.

In a related story, I really dig Vudu. It's on my Vizio internet apps, and I finally tried the free movie to take it for a test run. I went for the 720p HD res -- it looked fantastic and started almost immediately, and had no hiccups while viewing.

But I still like to go into the vid store and look at the boxes. Maybe I'm old fashioned that way. I think Netflix needs a virtual store option, where you can travel around the store and pick up boxes, flip them over to look at the back, etc. At the moment, Netflix seems good only if you know what you want to put in your Qeue before you get there. The browsing sucks ass.

Blockbuster is so desperate that now they are paying Sprint to auto install their stupid mobile app as part of a software update.

I updated my HTC Evo phone software a couple of days ago and now I have a Blockbuster app that I can't remove from my mobile unless I root the phone.

F@ck you Blockbuster! I hope your ship stays sunk!

I think cable TV is kicking their ass. Not that what I do is any barometer for the entire country, but I don't use Netflix as much because CableTv on demand has a lot to offer.

If I keep the same movie for another 4 months, I might just end up cancelling my subscription.

I wasn't talking about netflix mailing dvds i was talking about them streaming over the net. As they add more and more shows and tv networks they will be a huge threat to cable tv. It's coming.

Agreed, and I've never used red box, I do have a Netflix streaming only account though. If Netflix had newer releases like red box then I think they will easily stay ahead. I don't fuck with the DVD mailing for the same reason you listed, I can just stream it through my Xbox or any computer I have..

Off topic: why the hell do you have a pic with that scumbag in your avatar?

I guess I should take that out. It was a joke and has gone on too long.

Redbox is great. If we feel like watching a movie that night I will go on their website, find one I want to see, reserve it online, then wait till later that day when I am running errands and pick it up. Takes a couple minutes to pull into a gas station or where ever and get the movie and get back on the road. 10x faster then going into a dvd rental store. I hated when I use to wait in line for 10 mins at Blockbuster, much less am I going to wait a couple days to get the shit in the mail.

I was thinking about getting the Netflix subscription via my blue ray but if they don't give you new releases with it I wouldn't like it. 99% of the time when I get a movie its a new release, Red Box for $1 for new releases is a great deal.

This is why I have the blockbuster by mail subscription. The queque system sucks across the board, what I liked about blockbuster is when I finally do get a movie I want to see when I'm done with it I can just bring it to my local block buster and swap it out for something off the shelf and not pay a dime. I can keep the movie I checked out from the store for as long as I want, just like one I got in the mail.

It's super convenient. I love the hybrid of movies by mail mixed with instore rentals. I'll be sad to see it go, but sad for me, not for blockbuster. I hated the way they rolled in and killed all the independent movie rental stores. It's cyclical.

Here's why Netflix browsing sucks ass...

I go to my TV's Netflix app, and click on new arrivals. There's 5 movies there and that's it:

The Secret in Their Eyes, Prince of Persia(months old), Superman/Shazam, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend(???) and The Runaways(another movie that came out months ago)

How can I work with that?

What's really blowing my mind is how much bandwidth that Netflix utilizes if you have a big family. My wife and kids watch a ton of movies and shows... I have a massive internet connection at home with like 100 gigs of transfer. I actually got a warning the other day saying i was closed to my total capacity and would be charged $2 a gig for overage LOL!

I've never come anywhere remotely close to that amount and the only difference in the past 3 months is the netflix subscription. I think alot of people that got Netflix over the holidays will also be getting monster overage bills in the next little while. All of a sudden that $8 netflix subscription is not so cheap anymore ;-)

I use netflix streaming via the Roku and it has a better interface to search new arrivals, but I still mostly use my pc to set my instant que.

Netflix is a much loved company, the stock is a different story.

Look more closely under the hood at NFLX financials, where they've made their money in the past and what's been going on at the company and their industry recently.

Also note the heavy insider selling of NFLX stock (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/it?s=NFLX...r+Transactions) and the recent departure of the CFO.

I could be wrong but I think they're in for tough times.

I found redbox to be a pain in the ass... I drove around to four stores trying to find one specific bluray, lol.

Netflix doesn't get the good new releases quickly enough for my taste.

I used to be a big fan of the video store experience, walking around, reading the backs of movies, chatting with the guys who worked there, trying to find something really good... Funnily enough, Netflix is too convenient for me to go to a video store anymore, even though it doesn't really satisfy my movie watching needs.

Netflix is killing it but they'd be killing it 10x more with on demand (PPV) in addition to their free streaming in order to at least have the newer stuff available for streaming. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't have it by now.

If there cable gave more ondemand options by vastly expanding their library cable companies could totally kill it.

I only really watch rentals on my home television. I don't need physical DVDs. Right now the shortcoming of both streaming and ondemand is they don't have the same selection as the by mail.

There are no more brick and mortar stores in driving distance where I can dig through bins and find underground cinema, or rare movies. If it's something of an acquired taste or off the beaten path if it hasn't made it to the critereon collection I'm SOL. My choices are either dropping it in the queue and putting it out of my mind until it eventually arrives or ordering it online, which depending on who's selling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

The first company to allow me to watch something like "The Foul King", "In the Company of Wolves" or "Deadly China Hero" within hours of wanting to see if will be king.

What about BLOCKBUSTER's On-Demand streaming service? I use it all the time and 4/5 times I rent/buy a movie from Blockbuster On-Demand rather than Netflix, because Netflix's movie selection SUCKS.

The reason you don't see new releases streaming has mostly to do with the studios who won't give Netflix the rights because they want to protect their dvd sales.

I bet you never tried redbox. I would bet that anyone who tries redbox and does netflix via the mail only or any type of blockbuster deal would stop and just do redbox. Only exception would be if you live way way out in the middle of no where and have no redboxes closes to you.

I used to be a big fan of the video store experience, walking around, reading the backs of movies, chatting with the guys who worked there, trying to find something really good... Funnily enough, Netflix is too convenient for me to go to a video store anymore, even though it doesn't really satisfy my movie watching needs.
Why in the hell are you driving around from kiosk to kiosk ??

The error is between the seat and the keyboard. Here is a tip, go to redbox.com on your pc, or your phone. Select the movie you want to see and then put in your zip code. It will show you which ones have it near you. You reserve it online right then and there, go pick it up later when you would be driving that way anyway.

Drive around from location to location checking what they have

By now you would think that direct tv, dish, and every major cable company would have a library of every movie ever made available for you to play at any time you wanted to see it. Old movies could be $1, new releases $5 they would make a fucking killing. Imagine having access to every movie ever made right on your tv. Why hasn't this happened yet. It will happen though sooner or later. When this does happen it kills redbox. Who is going to want to get in the car and drive to pick up a movie when it can be rented via your remote. A few people would still go because redbox is a little cheaper but most wont.

It's all about convenience + instant gratification. Everyone here who is successful in advertising should be very familiar with this.

Netflix wait 1-2 days to see it (don't leave the house, convenience. But wait days)
Blockbuster / Redbox drive to pick it up (have to leave the house, inconvenience. But get it in minutes)
Streaming to your TV (don't leave the house, get it now) Game over.

There will be different prices for different options but 90% of the people will opt for convenience (not leaving the house) + (get it now) and pay the extra for it.

The Secret in Their Eyes, Prince of Persia(months old), Superman/Shazam, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend(???) and The Runaways(another movie that came out months ago)

How can I work with that?
That's not Netflix's fault. The movie studios do not want Netflix to succeed. Any new movies you see on Netflix streaming are either independant films or Starz movies. Until the movie studios get their heads out of their asses or Netflix severrely up what theya re willing to pay, Netflix streaming won't have any movies under 7 years old. After 7 years a movie has made it's run from movie theater to cable TV. So after than that getting money from Netflix is fine with them. Of course if Netflix pays more you won't get Netflix streaming for $8 a month.

Also the Runaways isn't that old. It didn't come out in the theaters until March of 2010. That's 11 months ago. I remember when getting a movie on VHS took 18 months to 2 years AFTER it made it theatrical run which may have been 6-9 months.

when something says New Releases, I think it should be what came out this week. This problem doesn't just exist with the non-availability in the Instant section ---- if you go to the main page where you can qeue dvds to mail, the new releases for browsing are months old. They have serious flaws in their browsing scheme. I usually have to go to Amazon and find out the list of new releases for the week, then search for it in Netflix. Its fucking retarded how bad the flick browsing is for a site that's supposed to be at the top of heap for internet movie rental.

Correct, it goes like this..... DVD release - OnDemand - Blockbuster / Netflix / Redbox

Actually I think it's more like this:

DVD release - OnDemand /Blockbuster - Netflix / Redbox

I don't believe that Blockbuster got hit with the "wait 28 days from release" requirement that Netflix and Redbox have.

The whole point of why Netflix would have to pay a lot extra for those and would have to charge for viewing them.

Actually it's like this: Theater - DVD/OnDemand/Blockbuster - Netflix( mail only )/RedBox - HBO/Showtime etc - cable/broadcast tv, syndication - Netflix streaming. This release window for a movie can be 7-10 years. Until Netflix can show that them getting it on streaming earlier means more money than via these other methods they'll be last in the chain.

Most OnDemand are now same day as DVD. No Blockbuster doesn't have to wait 28 days because they still charge $4-$5 for DVD rentals. Which is more money for the studios than when RedBox charges $1 or Netflix charges about the same or even less depending on what you subcription is.

Netflix needs a PPV option for new movies on streaming which I'm sure the studios would go for. I can rent a new movie at Amazon.com for $4 sometimes less. Only issue is they don't rent them in HD from your PC.

Shrug, only used it once, after walking by them a couple of months. They had a movie I really wanted to watch on blu-ray, and the three closest kiosks were closer than my house was, lol.

Until I rented that movie I didn't know they had an integrated website. Haven't used it since... Reserving online, finding the nearest location with my movie, driving there... This is better than Netflix how? It's still a clunky system, with a crappy selection of movies, the only thing going for it is the price.

are you serious? I know it is such a chore to go to redbox.com, select the movie you want to see and put in your zip code, find yourself on the map, then hit reserve. You are either reaching terribly if you think that is hard to do or you are extremely lazy. Getting in the car and driving, that;s tough too. You don't drive and leave your house at least a couple times a week if not every day? or have someone who lives with you that does? No need to make a special trip chances are someone is passing a redbox everyday.

How is it better ???

let's do a comparison.

.................................................. ...............Netflix............Redbox
Guarantee that you get the movie you want?.......No................YES
How long do you have to wait to get it?..............1-2 days........5-10 mins
How much does it cost?...................................$10 - $20.......$1 - $1.50
Don't use the service for a while, cost you?.........full price.........$0

Crappy selection of movies??? they have all the new releases lol. It's not for someone who wants to rent a 5 year old movie, they mainly carry just new releases and a few popular movies that have been out for a while.

How old are you, no offense but you come across as someone who is older and set in their ways. Unless you are a hermit and never leave home or live more than 10-20 mins away from a red box I don't see how you can like paying for a monthly membership for something you might not always use and you don't always get what you want when you do go to use it and on top of that you might have to wait up to 2-3 days to get what you didn't even wanted...

I think redbox owes me some money for posting all this shit.

You get it at that moment, as opposed to days later.
