What do you want to shoot?
What is your budget?

Are we talking low end point and shoot or hassleblad?

For a 'first ever video shoot', with a good quality/price ratio.
budget: 1-6k

I would get a small consumer hd vid cam for video... not a camera, +/- 1K. just about any sony, jvc, canon, panasonic would be fine. either a canon or nikon entery level dslr kit is fine for stills, +/- 3K. don't really think the tech is just yet for one 'cam' that does both really well...

Canon eos 7d with a fast L series lense. takes care of your photo and video work. and quality is unmatched unless you add another zero to you dollar amount.

but remember as any camera, for pics or vids, it's all about the light!

Its not the camera it's the light. Any current video camera would be fine. I like Canon so http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._M30_Dual.html

If you want to go up budget the first breakpoint is cameras with a socket for a mic - get the mic off the camera to avoid you heavy breathing and all the handling donks on the sound.

But you need more light. These fluoros are dirt cheap now on ebay and good for newbies as they don't get hot so won't set the curtains on fire. Two or three would work. They aren't super bright but will add just enough to boost whatever is in the room already and look kinda natural.

101 of lighting.

One in each corner of the room, except the corner behind the model. Lights, just over head height and pointing at the model.

Take a white balance off the ceiling (assuming its white) Do not use AWB.

Spend the other 5k on models.

Build a site.

Locate Porsche dealership.

And good luck keeping it in focus.

Video cameras are for video, stills cameras are for stills.

How true. I'm at the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International show in Vegas and I see all the DSLR video guys with so much attachments on their camera it's ridiculous.

are you serious? besides the 7d having audio built in it has a port for an external microphone, and shoots 1080p 30fps or 720p at 60 fps. not to mention the quality is unmatched in it's class. I used to shoot with a Sony HDR-FX7 and after comparing the quality I sold as sony pro-am camera....

take warning, the 7d does not do good on auto focus, you need to control it yourself for best results. and you'll have alot of learning to do. if your looking to make ametuer content, any handheld should be fine, try and use natural light if possible!

do a little googling and watch vids people made with the 7d

Just depends what level of quality you want, and how serious about shooting you are.

if your a noob, stick with a handycam.

I own 5D MKII's and the ONLY time I shoot video with them is if I'm on location and have an issue with my real video camera.

the 5d mkII's video doesn't stand up to the 7d's yet, I plan on switching to the 5d when a new model that beats the 7d's video comes out.

anything other than production would be way to hard to use the 7d for. you don't need all those attachment, though alot are nice, it comes down to quality vrs ease of use. the guy I sold my hdr-fx7 to did weddings and it works great for that, and I'm sure for most people its overkill,

its hard to shoot with the 7d, I tried switching back to my sony pro-am camera and the difference in the video was so strong that I decided to sell the sony, from that point it was nothing more than a paper weight to me....

if your new, go with a handycam!
if your looking for the easy road go with a handycam!
if your going for top quality, you have to work for it!

content quality 10 out of 10, just wanted to throw that out there.

but yeah, reading through it seems like a handycam would be better for you. I wouldn't recomend anything under $800. "you usually get what you pay for" but keep in mind, lighting is key!

o yeah one thing to keep in mind, if your shooting different models all the time,

if they are new to the game, they will probably be more comfterable infront of a regular looking camera.

if they have been shooting for a while, they'll usually try and do a better job and take things more serious if your equiptment looks more profesional.

Anyone posting such a question should not buy any camera....

Work with someone who is doing what you want to do, follow the process from idea to screen and you will get an idea of what that camera can do...

Even mainstream cinema films change cameras depending on the the script and style of film.

How is it possible to guess what camera would suit you? I have no idea what you want to produce.

By the way "whats the best car to buy at the moment?"

Any car you can afford. Hiring a taxi won't teach you a thing.

Fuck mainstream. Fuck "the process" Fuck the script. Just buy a camera, shoot some porn and don't over think it. It really is that simple.

Sheesh. Camera + naked girl, what's the worst that could happen?

Fuck mainstream. Fuck "the process" Fuck the script. Just buy a camera, shoot some porn and don't over think it. It really is that simple.

Sheesh. Camera + naked girl, what's the worst that could happen?
haha love the taxi thing, and so true! looks like someone just wants hired to make content for you.... and he is right, if you over think it, it will turn out so fake! make sure you have the proper paperwork and have all the legal stuff in order, even then be carefull unless your in cali... trust me I fought that court battle.... "distribution of obscene content" a bunch of bs.
