Spread of Wal-Mart Supercenters Linked to Obesity

The researchers, publishing in the Journal of Urban Economics, say their study implies that proliferation of Wal-Mart Supercenters, which offer food at highly discounted prices, explains 10.5% of the U.S. rise in obesity since the late 1980s.

but the resulting increase in medical expenditures offsets...consumers? savings from shopping at Supercenters.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction... Newton's laws of motion...

Do we need a news article to prove this? I am pretty sure it was already done.

yes, i think we do in fact need a news article for this, several. too many people pointing their finger at carbs/fats/wtfever.

fact is, many people become obese because marketing tells us to eat more than we need.

And parents can't say no to their kids and McDonalds. While people try to blame it on the commercials and toys in Happy Meals, parents just need to learn to say no.

Chris and I tend to split plates at restaurants because the portions are just too large. When I was at Lavo, an Italian restaurant in the Palazzo, I ordered chicken parm, my fav. It came out and was HUGE! I asked the guy how much chicken it was - close to 2 lbs! I said to him, "that's eight people's portion."

Now where I do agree it can be linked to obesity and it's around the right time is because they do offer their food at such a discount it's filled with artificial shit like high fructose corn syrup. I never had that shit when I was growing up, now it's in every damn food.

2 lbs is 32 ounces so divide that by 8 and you get 4 ounces. I'm sorry but if I ordered chicken parm and only got 4 ounces of chicken I'd be pissed.

nevertheless, 4oz is considered 1 serving of chicken.

Well, I only eat 4 ounces of meat and when mixed with sides and my roll/bread addiction, I'm full.

You know some animal died so you could eat it. The least you do is eat as much of it as possible.

Lower food prices could mean that people eat more food. The article says "researcher study", so I would believe the study to be true.

Just because it is considered a single serving doesn't mean you're only allowed to eat one you fucking idiot. The food guide says you should eat 3 meat or alternative servings per day. Eat 3 if you feel like it. No one is gonna cart your ass to jail for eating 4 if that's your thing, unless they start jailing dumbshits too. In which case, look the fuck out...

Don't worry the bones were mechanically scraped and processed so you can happily devour 6 servings of chicken nuggets on your next McDonalds run...

Look up the stats regarding Mexico's growing obesity epidemic, it's regional growth, and the southward growth of Walmart. As Walmart pushes deeper, childhood obesity coincidentally seems to follow right behind. The average Mexican's diet has changed drastically with the introduction of new Walmarts. They even have some clever little nickname for the correlation between the two. I can't remember what it is now off the top of my head now though...

You know what else has a direct collocation to obesity? Welfare. I wonder who shops the most at Walmart, rich people or poor people?

I think in other studies they've looked at global microwave ownership.
You can spend 2 hours making lasagna from scratch, lean beef, fresh tomatoes etc. or buy a processed one full of fat, sugar, salt and modified scary stuff and stick it in the microwave for 3 minutes. People fill their freezers up with crap, then cane it.
The fact that it's cheaper than making it yourself doesnt help.

So true. You can buy a frozen lasagna for like 5 bucks, but buy all the ingredients and it's easily double-triple that. Plus prep time is several times more making your own.

Sometimes I wonder, all the time you spend making/eating better foods... do you live that much longer? Or if I just microwaved crappy lasagna and prefab/fast food all the time would I save that much more time/money in my daily life than I would living longer eating healthy?

just something to think about.... especially when you see people who live really long and take care of themselves like shit. oh well, life goes on. lol
