Computer does not detect DVD drive

I have a HP with Vista x64.

About three months ago I installed a BluRay drive. The computer would detect the BR drive but I had problems getting discs to play so I sent it back. At the time, my computer could detect both BR and DVD drives.

Ever since the BR drive was removed, the computer has not been detecting the DVD drive. I opened it up again today to make sure that all of the cables were plugged in tightly, and they were. I don't know much about this stuff but I'm guessing that since the BR drive was removed, the computer stops looking for additional drives so it never noticed is that there is a DVD drive in place.

What do I need to do to fix this?

I only use Linux now but in XP and older you used to be able to go to Control Panel and choose an option (like search for new hardware) to get the computer to search for new hardware. However, it should have already detected it. Best bet is to call up tech support. Insist that the computer works 100% or return it if you suspect a hardware problem because it will only get worse.

You might have to switch master/slave jumpers on the drive. Not sure if they even still have em, its been a while since i worked on a desktop.

Are you able to see the DVD drive in the BIOS? Are there any error messages in the "Device Manager"?

Does the DVD drive register in the BIOS?
Is the cable between the motherboard and the DVD making a good connection?

Are your connections physically good?

Has the DVD gone bad, if you have another CD, DVD device (known as a working device) try installing that as a test.

think about that
