Ugh, Google is ruthless in the ideas they steal from Apple. Apple hasn't announced it yet, but they will also be entering the online movie streaming business. I have no doubt that Eric Schmidt was made aware of that idea and Apple's intentions while he was an Apple board member. So first he stole the iPhone idea when Google created their ridiculous "Nexus One." Then they entered the mobile O/S market to compete with Apple's iOS. Now they're going to try distributing movies like Apple will be doing. Google is such bullshit. They're starting to remind me of Microsoft.

youtube.com already controls huge market share and the market itself for online videos

Google is going to get slammed with antitrust pretty soon. I read that the DOJ is already putting together a case?

Indeed, I agree that this move makes sense for Google. However, I also believe that if Eric Schmidt had not been an Apple board member, Google would not be making this move at this time. IMO, he is clearly trying to get a head start on Apple. Worst of all, he is using his insider knowledge of Apple as a means to try and outmaneuver them.

Whoever puts Red box online first will take over, I'm not sure why Netflix doesn't have new DVD releases on there? Even if they're charged per view or require a more expensive membership.

Maybe they can talk to Microsoft on that one. Or maybe Intel. Either way, I doubt anything will come of it. Google has the money to go the distance and fight the government for decades if it sees fit. |

I have a Sony GoogleTV which comes preloaded with NetFlix among some other shit. I enjoy being able to watch a lot of movies on demand. But it's library is lacking for the streaming selections. I do watch a lot of porn/YT videos on my TV which is nice. I can also check my email and shit without having to bring a laptop into the room to check on shit. All in all, just an added level of convenience. |

they're only competing with Netflix if they charge a monthly fee not a per-movie rental

This looks like it is not much more than a PPV service with the exception that they also have a few titles for free. Until they have 10,000+ titles for free and unlimted rentals for around $10 per month I doubt they will be much of a threat to Netflix.

They use to have that. Then the movie companies got together and realized they could still make money from dvd sales and started holding back what they would allow netflix to release.

Also, with some of the studios Netflix agreed to wait 28 days when it comes to sending out new releases in exchange for getting access to more of that studio's library on streams. Supposedly Netflix clams that only about 30% of their customers even select new movies when they first come out, the rest choose things from rest of the library.

This move is way too late. Those who are willing to pay for premium content are already doing so with Netflix.
YouTube will forever be associated with short clips and silly videos - for me anyways. Even when I have a choice to view HD content on either Vimeo or YouTube I usually go with the Vimeo version. This move is akin to K-Mart deciding that they were going to start selling $300 jeans for $300. Though they may have customers who can afford $300 jeans it's just not somewhere they would probably go for them. Too little, too late.

Great, just what we need. More bandwidth tied up by some mouth-breather in Kentucky watching every Steven Segal movie on his Wal-mart computer.

I wont be surprised if NETFLIX does not file a suit for unfair practices.
On another note Netflix has had on Demand viewing for years. |
