people should have to give up their privacy rights when they use the technology in a legitimate way (like using torrents like a vcr/backup/recovery)

even if other people use it for illegitimate use.

file sharing is a technlogical shift

it can be used for legitimate purposes (fair use and authorized distribution)

or piracy

You have said all along that copyright holders should not go after torrent sites, but that they should go after those who are illegally downloading the copyrighted material. With this new technology in place exactly how do you suggest they go about at?

I've tried it months ago. The download speeds are very slow... But it will be a good alternative if "they" manage to sue pirates.

No, I just want you to answer the question. You say that copyright holders should go after those who download illegally not the torrent sites nor the technology, yet you are a proponent of a technology that will make that impossible to do.

You and I are are are clearly two different ends of the spectrum. I want the copyright holders to maintain most of the rights to their work, you want them to surrender pretty much all of their rights in the name of fair use and you want to take away the tools that a copyright holder could use to go after those who do download illegally.

So tell me, if anyone can download anonymously, how do you propose people protect their material from those who are downloading it illegally?

please it only impossible if you limit your friends to people you have personally verified.
do you know how difficult it is to keep perfect control over your friends list.

this pushes file sharing back to the 1:circle of friends you keep refering to being ok when i keep bringin up the vcr.

ones that allow you to investigate without violating peoples privacy right

or embrace the technology so that it just becomes another distribution channel.

or maybe use more expensive tried and true investigative techniques that have served police for years when they go after the big piracy rings (just becuase they are not cost effective when going after individual doesn't justify not using them)
