A shortened NFL season, think I'll boycott.

If rich team owners and high paid athletes forget the fans I'm all for forgetting them. I won't watch a single game if the season is shortened.

I've always thought the NFL season is short as fuck anyway is it not ?

What the hell do you guys do for all the months isn't not on ? Our football (soccer) season just finished about 3 weeks ago, but we'll be back in business on 23rd July.

NFL season seems to be over before it even starts...

masturbate and drink

our 4 major sports go basically overlap year round, but with football, there are so many injuries that going more than 15 games would probably kill a lot more players

i wish the NFL season were longer, can't stand how long the off season is - the owners want to add 2 more games to make it an 18 game season, more games more TV and stadium revenue. the NFL is like no other sport in the world, it is violent and brutal, Europeans don't understand how brutal it is, they just see a lot of big guys in caged helmets and padding blocking and tackling each other. Concussions, broken bones, torn muscles, torn joints - many players play through bad injuries with the help of drugs. It shortens careers. The point is you can't put these guys through much longer of a season without the players having their careers shortened and their future health and lives put at risk. Already the NFL has a ton of retired players from the 70's and 80's who are suffering from dementia and similar problems, and many dead before their time, though like the WWF/WWE alot of that is from steroids and anti-inflammatory drug overusage. NFL offensive linemen because of their size and other factors literally have a life expectancy into their 50's. The NFL has protected the quarterbacks because they are the superstars and there just aren't many elite quarterbacks in the NFL. The receivers could play a longer season as could players in the defensive secondary but the rest just can't.

So my idea to make the season longer is to add the 2 extra games making an 18 game season and stretching the season longer by adding more bye weeks - it would allow players to heal if each team had 3 bye weeks instead of the 1 they have now, therefore better performance, and money wise the TV networks would cream their pants to have the NFL season last an extra month or 6 weeks. I haven't done the math but you'd have 10-12 games every Sunday instead of 16.

Yeah, just seems a really long time season to season.

I guess that's why Americans do follow Baseball, Basketball, Hockey so much then aswell as NFL...

Quit whining about something that MIGHT happen. The 9 game season of 1982 when the players had a strike didn't hurt the NFL did it? Just because I have home owenrs insurance doesn't mean I'm hoping my house burns down. Just because I wear a seat belt doesn't mean I'm anticipating an accident.

I hope they cancel the whole season.

The owners and players need to realize they need football more than the fans do. Fans can find other things to do with their time and money. The owners and players are taking what they have for granted and can .

these threads always bring out the sports snobs that have to justify their sport as the most violent, calling supreme athletes pussies, all while displaying their complete lack of knowledge about how tough it is down there on the gridiron.

because it rly boils down to 2 issues- player access to the books and an 18 game season or not.

regardless of how much the players make, they are still employees, salaried employees. their salaries were many times based on rev share in a deal where the owners did not have to reveal the financials. i think it's very fair to allow access to the books if you are going to compensate employees based on revenues.

as much as i'd love an 18 game season, i understand why the players do not, as it stand under the current agreement.

fact is, those owners are raking it in big time, i've read they will all still cover themselves if the season does not happen just from the guaranteed television dollars. and goodall took the side of the owners, plain and simple when he should of taken the side of the fans. so fuck him, the owners i can understand, they really don't have anything to lose from a lockout, the players and the fans lose.

WRONG.

Players have stated they'll gladly play 18 games ( like they do in the Candaian football league ) if they are paid more and the owners have said they would. So really a non-issue.

Actually players make more than the owners. Of the 9 billion the NFL makes, the players get $4.8 billion and the owners get $4.2 billion. What other company do you know where the employees make more than the owners?

Actually a judge has ruled AGIANST TV deal and said that is not allowed. I thought you've been keepiong up. He ruled like 2 months ago.

Actually most businesses have the owners making way less than the employees. The owner makes a salary and whatever the bottom line is but wages and cost of doing business far out way the owners NET.

Actually wal-mart spends less than 10% of it's gross revenues workers pay. And they have 1.4 million workers. NFL players get 53% of gross revenues. If wal-mart paid it's employess 53% of gross revenue your average wal-mart cashier would make $75K-$100K per year.

Its sucks right now. The owners don't care if there is a season or not because 1) they'll still get the revenue from the TV contract deals whether they're shown or not and 2) they don't have to pay the players.

For the players they want to play in order to get paid. While I doubt the players will really want to play a reduced 8-game season, they'll take it if it means they'll get paid.
Also the players don't want to go to an 18-game format because it will leave them open to the next negotiation talks when they want increase it even more and probably not get the pay increase for it.

As said above in an earlier post - A judge ruled against owners using any TV money.

Owners also agreed to ditch the idea of an 18 game season for now.

No they didn't. They were against the idea the whole time because they feared a longer season would create more injuries. Also, it would put more wear and tear on their bodies that go through enough of that with 16 games.

You really can't compare a retail business with their high cost of goods percentage to a sports franchise. But even so does Walmart's owners make more than 10% of the gross revenue which was the original question.

They should do the full 16 game season or just simply cancel the entire season.

In other words, do it right or don't do it at all
