How well do you know Linux ?

If you understand *nix, apache, php, basic security etc you should not have any problems managing a VPS.

Edit, as you have had to ask, perhaps it's beyond you.

What control panel does it come with? If DirectAdmin it is very easy and we have an entire set of Flash based tutorials anyone can access.

We also offer cPanel tutorials, but personally, I thought cPanel was more confusing than DirectAdmin.

Go with managed. That way as long as you can navigate the CP you're good. If it's unmanaged and it goes down you'll be SOL.

If you read a couple of books you can manage it ok for a year or so until the hackers take it over.
Seriously for just a few dollars per month you can leverage the knowledge and experience of expert engineers who manage many similarly configured servers. Companies like Amerinoc offer the services of $100 / hour engineers for next to nothing because their engineers manage hundreds of servers.
Also the big name sites don't hire us because they are stupid. They hire us because they know that a little time from a qualified engineer will save them thousands compared to the mistakes they would make by trying to do it themselves. They know they are marketers, not engineers.

Define easy.

If you are a quick learner then it may be easy, for some it comes naturally and easy, just like you have some things you are most likely good at that may be hard for others to pick up as quickly as you did.

It's not "easy", otherwise everyone would do it. It's not "hard" either, as many people manage their own, but it takes dedication to stay on top of everything as you will battle thousands trying to hack you daily in one form or another.

And even when you think you grasp the concept, the guys that really know what they are doing will blow your mind, it's like they are connected to the matrix (AKA the Interwebs).

At the end of the day, it's like life, you get out of it what you put in to it.

Good luck with it.

AmeriNOC does not use cPanel. They include DirectAdmin for free on all managed plans though, or so I've heard. ;-)

That said, I've seen your other post... I wouldn't recommend running any tube site using less than a VPS/Dedicated server with at least 1 GB RAM, even if you are using sponsor hosted videos.

Also, my last nugget for the night, you should search for WT (WiredTree) on this forum and see how many references you find. Think about where you are at and from whom you are asking for advice, either you are going to listen to them (us) or you aren't.

Good luck.

I say to everyone I talk to, why not go managed and let the people that deal with servers for a life handle the server end of things. This gives you more time to work on your site and build your traffic.

We prefer Directadmin, which Amerinoc uses, to Cpanel. Directadmin gives you a more sanely configured server by default. Cpanel beats the hell out of Plesk though. Plesk does some EXTREMELY stupid things which virtually guarantee that your server will be severly hacked. Specifically, by default Plesk sets it so that all visitors to your site are allowed to edit the site.

Absolutely. Although we've been doing server admin for fifteen years and I have some involvement with developing Apache itself, even we have begun to turn the hardware side over to hardware people. Figure out what you do best and do it, letting other people do what they do best. That's the only reason we don't live in mud huts anymore - because we pay the construction people to do construction while we each do our own specific jobs.

One more comment about "easy". It's easy to slowly but completely screw up your system, until it gets so bad you finally realize you need an expert to spend many hours fixing it. We just billed $2000 for straightening out a huge mess made by someone who was "learning" system adminstration by ruining the source of their income. Instead, they could have spent maybe $300 to have a competent midlevek tech run it from the start.

unless something goes wrong - you don't need to do anything

if it does - you will end up paying some geek $100/h to fix it

for me it is less expensive to pay someone when sth is wrong as having managed servers - and i have 3 hexa core servers now

also if sth is very very wrong or servers being hached - just get new servers and extract backups / move users - way cheapper and faster as fixing

I like direct admin too + they have good support that fixed my servers for free ( error was on DA side)

also fuck vps, get dedicated servers - if you cant afford them - go look for a job and stop wasting your time on GFY

Amerinoc is famous for one thing - its amazingly qualified support!
You simply will NOT find another company who will serve you better or more professional, than Amerinoc. I've been with them for years and for good reasons, they are today powering my entire business, for the one and only reason - that they do it much better than anyone else.

I you aren't part of the Amerinoc family yet, please do give it a try and you will never look back, ever again.

True. Their competency is way above almost all others. This is coming from a guy who is paid to provide highly competent admin services himself. Their email support is also very fast. We only do not recommend them if phone support is important to you. They don't answer the phone most of the time.

OMG...it's so much work running sites these days. Why try and add to the amount of work by running your own server? Just my two cents. I know that mojohost is there for me 24/7 and when shit happens you really need that sort of service and expertise.

QUOTED FOR TRUTH ...

Feel free to look at our prices. We've been active in the adult industry since 1998, and were one of the first companies to offer small end user VPSes in 2005. All of our plans are fully-managed and come with a 60 day no questions asked money-back guarantee.

You do not need managed if you only want to add domains.
You just need cpanel.
But managed servers coest only a few dollars more
and they will answer all your questions. That is why beginners should
start with a managed sever.

I've had a server with Wiredtree. If I remember correctly the support turned pretty bad after a while. This was back in 2009.

I've hired this guy before: http://www.supportm.com/
He's awesome and only cost $50/month.

I do have a server I manage myself. I did let some techguy set it up and install everything I needed and remove stuff I didn't need like FTP, Email and other stuff.
Changed MySQL and SSH standard ports and many other security-related things I dont remember.

I have automatic updates turned on and just login to Webmin once in a while to check if everything is OK.
So far no problems and it have been running for nearly a year now. But I wouldn't host any critical sites on this machine...
