Deciding on dog breed
It's too damn hard, seriously. I opened a Husky thread a while back cause it's the dog I've wanted pretty much my entire life. Akita's are amazing too.
I've been reading up on Husky's though and the amount of hair they lose, how they refuse to listen to their boss a lot of times, are kind of a turn off. The hair not so much to me, that's an issue my gf has. But refusing to listen is something I don't like when it comes to safety for other people/dogs, etc. Do all dogs stink, by the way? I know some stink worse than others but but father in law has 2 dogs (no idea what breed) that get washed and trimmed a LOT but they still stink horribly. Can some of you throw around some tips? What breeds are really cool to get? I really don't like the standard dogs like golden retrievers, labs, etc. I'm sure they are fantastic dogs, but I don't want to own one. Cheers!

![]() See, a lot of people say you can't have your husky unleashed cause chances are it will run off on it's own as soon as he's distracted and his instinct takes over. Ofcourse there's exceptions but as a general rule that's what they say. That kinda sucks too..

Rhodesian Ridgeback. Lot of personality. Energetic for the first couple of years but mellow out after that. They become low key but will play and expend a lot of energy if you want them too. They are versatile and are fine in any climate. The ridge on their back is very unique and very cool. They make good watch dogs and despite the trait of them being standoffish around people, they are very friendly but will protect you fiercely if need be. Give them a look.
Good luck on your choice of breed. I know it can be a pain with so many to choose from. |

I like mutts. Check the dog-pound, sometimes death row doggies are the best pets.

I'm 23 and I'm planning to do long term world traveling in a few years. It would be great if I could take the dog with me. So I guess a dog that's good with a lot of change is also mandatory.

Dude, YES. I came across two in a zoo a few weeks back. They were amazing, seriously. But I do like a badass looking dog, dont ask me why, guess I'm shallow like that ;) That's why I love huskys too.
Here's the chow chows I saw at the zoo: ![]()

I'm a Golden Retriever man myself, but I'm fond of all big dogs. Whatever breed you choose, there is usually a local rescue organization specializing in it. Check them out first. Allot of people have had to give up their pets due to hard times lately.

![]() What about the smell question? Do all dogs stink or does that have to do with the length of their coat or something?

I have three small, short-haired dogs and one large-ish long haired dog. None of them really stink unless they find something interesting to roll in.
But I'm used to the smell of dogs. |

I have 2 lab mixes I got from the humane society a year and a half ago, great dogs. The girl is a lab and border collie mix, very very sweet with people/kids/cats/dogs. She figured out how to use the bathroom outside very fast when shes laying around you can move em,hug em, play with them, etc. They are sweet, playful, and loyal dogs. Big though, my girl is around 85 lbs. The guy is good as well but not as nice, more cautious. He is beagle and lab mix. Still a good dog but not as trusting with everything.
Good luck to you with whatever you end up choosing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Over here you can ;)
Having said that, I live in Holland. In 23 years of my life I've never heard of anyone who keeps their dog outside in the yard over here. I believe that in general a lot of dogs live outside in the garden in the US, which is great, but over here they spend their time indoors since it rains 95% of the time in this god damned shit hole. Man, I even forgot about mixed breeds, the list just got 15 times longer.

In my opinion, the smaller the dog, the less the smell. I have a jack russel/whippet mix....she is batshit crazy and totally worth it!

Golden Retriever
One of the best decisions I ever made for my family. The temperament is friendly, doesn't bark and sleeps all the time. My retriever gets my TV remote, my slippers and picks up various other objects on the floor without damaging them. My retriever also retrieves beer from my wife when she is downstairs. Retrievers just want to please all the time.

they smell after what you feed them. Good food, no smell.

you say you want a dog and then you say your going to travel the world
you either plan on never staying indoors anywhere or the idea is selfish and short sighted edit and like grumpy says how the dog smells is directly related to what you feed them |

Traveling by car to N. Italy was about the limit. Go on your world travels first and buy a dog when you return. The obvious setbacks are too numerous. Food, restaurants, shopping, access to places, climate, travel, laws, having to always have the dog with you, hotel accommodation, local people. Italy they loved Rajah. I know in some countries in the Far East they would rather shoot a dog than pat it. You might want to take a boat trip and can't because they don't allow dogs on the boat or a flight in a small plane. Then rabbis is a problem in some countries. Rabbies Quote:

These Dog 101 videos are pretty awesome! Thanks for posting them.
Here's the dog I had until I had a baby. Seems to fit your needs nicely, if you're an active person. Maybe 2/3 the size of a Ridgeback, very similar colour, fast as shit, very loving, smart, affectionate, playful, everything you'd want in a dog. Here's the Dog 101 video: Caveats would be they're not kidding when they say the dog wants to be with you at all times. If you're at your computer, your dog will be underneath your desk. If you get up, he's coming with you. You'll be tripping over him all the time, and using your knees to keep him out of things.. Like if you're going into the fridge, guess what, he's going with you. ;) They're awesome looking dogs, when they see something they're interested in their ears perk up like triangles and they pause.. as seen here: I sent my dog to Mexico with my wife's family when I had a baby because I didn't want to take the risk. They'd found him on the highway when he was ~2, he'd already had a broken and healed paw, big scar on his nose, didn't respond to commands.. Pretty positive he was in a hunting pack and got away. Vizsla's are a popular hunting/bird dog. He'd snap if you went for his food the first time, then think twice about it and let you.. He was territorial, etc. Just couldn't trust him with a baby. When my kid is a bit bigger I'll get another one, this time from a puppy. |

Dude if you are going to travel a lot you should get one that's less than 8 KG so you can bring it aboard the plane ;)
You should talk to my gf about this btw, she obsesses over dogs 50% of her time awake lol |

I have a Bull Mastiff, she is a beautiful dog and they are usually quite big ( mine isn't very big) they do say that when you buy a bull mastiff for the first time it should be a bitch as dogs are a little harder to handle. you should really check them out and if you want any advice feel free to ask me..
Here is a video not sure how to embed sorry. It shows that they are obedient https://youtube.com/watch?v=L-Pzk...ADC2050BF42F5B

lol just remembering one time at my dad's I took the canoe down the river several km's, and then we heard rustling in the bushes and my dog walks out, gets into the water and swims to our canoe.. Always wants to know where you are.
This was common too indoors, this weird looking run around a small room when they get excited, then pausing, looking at you for a second, then back to running. In this video it's the wire haired kind. I've never seen one in real life yet. It's {youtube}ID{/youtube} but with square brackets. haha.. yeah also be prepared to get molested. |

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Really looking into Rhodesian Ridgebacks right now. Loving them more and more. Awesome dogs!
My gf obviously wants a fluffy cute dog, but I'll have to respectfully throw that suggestion in the trashcan. Gonna think this through long and hard and read up on dog training as much as I can. I never want to underestimate the time and effort I'll have to spend on the dog. Will post pics ofcourse if we decide to get one!
