Banner Ads on Seinfeld Reruns

Weeknights at 11 & 11:30pm Seinfeld reruns are shown on one of the tv stations on my service provider. Last night during the 11:30pm show a banner advertisement for some online college (I think, don't remember 100%) took up 1/4 of the screen. It lasted about 30 seconds and had flash like graphics. I felt like I was watching a YouTube video. WTF is that about! Stations don't make enough on commercials that take up 8 minutes of a 30 minute show they have to start selling advertising space DURING THE SHOW?!?!

Anyone else seen this yet?

I've seen similar things to promote other shows on the same network, but I haven't seen any advertising another product or service, yet. As annoying as it is, and it will probably piss most off, I can understand the purpose of it. Many people DVR stuff now, and skip through the commercials (myself included--I never watch anything live anymore, unless it's football). Advertisers are probably pissed that the ads they are paying for aren't getting seen, so stick them on during the show where they can't be skipped.

As simple as that sounds after hearing it that never crossed my mind! I would presume that this would be the #1 reason.

I deliberately DVR every show I watch, and won't start watching it until it's at least a half hour in, so that way I can skip through all the commercials. It's kind of funny, if a glimpse of a commercial catches my eye (like a movie trailer), I'll stop to watch it. Then my wife bitches at me, "What the fuck are you doing? Put the show on."

Yes .... and the strategic product placements within the shows - circa the 1960s - are beginning to make a strong comeback now with the DVR becoming more popular ...

Advertisers want to be guaranteed that their audiences are seeing their ads ...

And the not-so-strategic ones....watch an episode of Biggest Loser. About 45 minutes in, someone will complain about a snack craving, Bob will offer them a piece of this incredible Extra gum that has only xx calories and curbs your cravings in between meals. They've got the contestants doing it now. Last night one of the girls was rambling on about Yoplait yogurt.

most people have DVRs and know commercials are not worth what they once were. the only thing I really watch live is US football and during commercials, I am usually getting more beer or taking a pee

As the size of TV screens has increased, so has the amount of potential advertising space. I'm already sick of it when a channel advertises other shows during the show I'm watching. I'm paying for my fucking cable TV AND I have to watch tv ads; I'm not watching ads 24/7. I'll wait until the shit comes out on DVD before I go that route.

violators ... extra revenue for the station, which pays out the ass for Seinfield, but lso because of DVR skipping/recording which causes the C3 ratings to tumble and ad rates to crater since fewer people see the ads

Stupid Banners

Monday night I was watching Hawaii 5-0. This huge banner pops up to tell me "You're watching Hawaii 5-0." No shit! I thought I was watching the Simpsons. How retarded are TV people?

That banner wasn't only intended for those already viewing it (and yes, some viewers really do need reminding; some leave their TV set to the same channel much of the day), but also aimed at grabbing some channel surfers flipping through. TV ad folks are smarter than many give them credit for.

Now radio, that's a whole different story - much stupidity in how they operate, such as blabbering on and on about nothing (and no, I'm not talking about the ads), practically encouraging listeners to tune out ... and it shows in ever lower ratings; few young people listen to traditional FM radio anymore, but I digress.

Ron
