Had an inactive site for years that still had recurring members on it month after month even though the site essentially no longer exists...

Every once in a while they'd fall off one by one getting cancelled... well today the 20-30 remaining were all cancelled at the same time, I guess CCBill pulled the plug.

Personally I have problem with companies using their market position to overcharge. No I rather go with the one with lower fees, lower scrubbing, better throughput, newer technology and cooler name....

That site made me a killing - but yes, I let it drop and I shouldn't have or else I'd probably be making even more than I am right now, I have other projects doing quite well now...

They should have cut it off after the site went down really. When I had a paysite (nearly a decade ago) I closed down I gave one month's notice and then made sure no one was billed further. That's more of the proper way to do it without ripping anyone off. In theory your members could have charged back once the site went down.

All payment processors are suffering from chargeback paranoia. If you want free porn you just sign up to any site using your credit card and when you're finished downloading everything you contact the payment processor and say: do a refund now or I'll do a chargeback through my bank! I never was with CCbill, what they did sucks in my opinion but all other processors would do the same thing. I can't wait till the whole credit card system gets replaced by direct bank debits worldwide.

I don't see the rip off thing. Card holders could have cancelled their subscription. But some are just lazy and stupid. I have members with 3 accounts at the same time and that can go on for years and will only stop when the credit card expires

I've been subscribed to non-updating sites for a year too, and I only blamed myself for that and didn't feel like being ripped off. Ripping off IMO would be continue charging the cards after subscription has been cancelled.

1) One of the main benefits using a card processor is to have them look over the chargeback ratio. If I go over 1% on a merchant account, I'm fucked! With a third party processor I can always make up a plan to go below 1%, or even continue over 1% if they are nice and make money from my business. Personally in a near future I don't think it will be possible for an online business to get an direct merchant account with a bank due to all risk,compliance and international KYC. I bet you will only see third party processors out there... paypal, worldpay, bibit, google etc... and they will fight to have control over their chargebacks, even if it's credit card or direct banking chargebacks..... adopt :2cents:

I more or less agree with that, but it hasn't been the case for the past couple of years, and it's hard to say no to the money coming in.

On another site that's gone down I did stop recurring on all members.

I hear you. But I have my own merchant account and the bank first warns me if chargebacks go too high and next step is paying more commission instead of being kicked off completely. And the third party procesorrors I work with don't really look at the chargeback ratio, they just show it to you in the dail stats and reports. But that's really something you can make yourself, even in excel.

Uh... the benefit of direct bank debits is that chargebacks aren't possible. And I'm not saying that it will happen (soon). My comment was merely wishful thinking. Another alternative would be that online credit card transactions without Visa secure code aren't possible anymore and that once the credit card holder submits the secure code, a chargeback is not possible. I was talking to a payment processor the other day who charges 12% and doesn't even provide with secure code! Insane!

I agree, and you forgot PCI. A full PCI server system costs $1500 a month.

Would be great if PayPal would get their act together and accept online adult. They already accepted adult mailorder which is a good omen. But with PayPal you have the same problem... people can buy an account and when they downloaded everything, complain to PayPal and demand a refund. So when it comes to chargebacks I don't see an advantage in PayPal over credit cards.

I really hope we will get this global direct bank debit soon and I'm going to look into pay-by-phone again.
