i think before it was a hole that the ball would fall through it was a hole that they would use a broom or stick to pop the ball up (i think?)

they have these heritage canada commercials here in canada and one of them is about these peach buckets/nets thing

Plus, in the early years it was just a lightly played, experimental game. The Wiki article says they didn't even sort out 5 man teams until 1897?1898 and the scoring was very low.
