50 car graveyard deep in a German forest

link
Most people think Michael Fröhlich, a classic car dealer from Dusseldorf, is a bit mental. Which is perfectly reasonable. He looks like a cross between Uri Geller and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tanned, smiling and self-assured, he's in the classic car business for decades.

The man's a collector himself too, but not as we know it. His daily driver gives a hint to his perversion - it' a fire-damaged Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow with a new drivetrain and suspension setup, but the body sgtill wears its, umm, "patina".

I visited a location that had "old car" marked on a map and found a graveyard with cars from the 1950s and 1960s. There were at least 30. I ran into the owner and she told me the cars had been sitting there since the 1980s. One had a mature tree growing through its engine bay.

I visited a couple of times then left it and sort of forgot about it, discovered a few years later that they'd all been cleared away.

There's a junk yard with about 30 of these not too far from me. All lined up next to each other facing the road. Quite interesting.

you're not much of a classic car expert, are you?

i've seen cars rebuilt from much worse conditions than those and the Volkswagen Bus alone is about $40-$50K if properly restaurated.

They call them junkyards here in the US.. It's rare though to find them with classic cars are that aren't picked to the bones. I always love looking at old shit like that, specially if it's like the day it was left.

if you know where to find them - especially the first version with the split front window and the so called "Samba" with the small windows in the roof - and you can get them cheap - we should indeed ;)

this is beyond restauration point .

I used to collect antiques, but only ragtops ... My worst buy was a Lincoln Zephyr 1939 convertible ... got it shipped from Huntington Beach California, to Plattsburgh, NYl .

Then, towed from Plattsburgh to my front yard ( used to live in a farm area ) . Next morning, cops stops and offered to get it removed, as they tought someone had dumped the scrap on my property.

I never restored it, just sold it as is and lost a few K ...

this could be a long discussion

some cars are rebuilt up to a point where you have to ask which parts are still original - besides the 10 square centimeters of metal that carry the identification number. but i have seen much worse examples than the Porsche.

but it only makes sense of course if the result is worth something, wouldnt do that with a Gremlin or Pacer

I have several German friends that I met back in the 80's. They would come here, buy bikes and cars, crate them up and ship them back home. One time, a German "customs" officer told one of my friends, "Americans must really love you coming there and buying all their junk."

I never claimed to be, but I know this much: a re-built car will never fetch a fraction of what an original will bring. The cars I see in those pics aren't likely worth more than their weight in scrap metal. They certainly have seen their fair share of the elements over the decades.
