Weren't those the kids who were dressed in suits who were making fun of the 1% through parody?

"1% 100% stick together!" and "ReReReRe-elect Bloomberg!"

*Ahh, just blew up the image and looked at the signs.

My friends' mom was one of the very early counter-protesters and she was pretty much alone also.

OWS needs to clarify its goals, demands, and positions - SPECIFICALLY, or it will be vilified and destroyed. This was my position at the beginning, and it is only strengthened as time passes.

I'm as anti-establishment as it gets, and even I'M embarrassed by the weakness of the occupiers. Get on the same page, and rally SPECIFIC populist demands.

I'm generally unhappy so I am holding a vague sign and creating inconveniences, is not going to be a winning strategy. Sorry.

The Tea Party was a smaller movement, but it was FOCUSED. It had a SPECIFIC agenda. An idiotic, pathetic, shortsighted, greedy, miserable, and hate-filled agenda - BUT THEY GOT SHIT DONE! It resulted in a big change in elections, and how Washington is currently working (not working).

I HATE the Teatard movement, almost all of their goals, and their agenda in general - BUT THEY WERE FOCUSED AND SPECIFIC!

The OWS movement is much bigger, but it is not accomplishing anything right now.

No one needs a tent city with a library and a kitchen in their park - they NEED POLITICAL CHANGE, and a faux society, structured like an inconvenient campground, is not a strategy that will fix anything. It looks childish and sadly pathetic.

That's pretty much the way I feel too.

The fucking protesters have this backwards. They are fighting the local police officers, making them look bad... Well, the local police officers are in fact the 99%. They shut down the shipyard in Oakland - Union members, more of the 99%, great job. Today they shut down some of the subway system in NYC - Which is used mostly by low income people... Fucking brilliant!

Take this shit directly to the heart of the matter, to the only people that can make change: Washington DC.

Totally agree! But don't bother taking it to the people there, those people ARE the problem. Work to get them the hell OUT of there!

They have a whole year to get specific and actually get shit done. Not much they can do before the election.
Not a bad thing that they are unorganized and without leadership. Part of what they are accomplishing is to keep the focus on all of the things are actually fucked up with the system, instead of the focus being on whatever the media and politicians wants the focus to be on..

This is just the beginning. Nothing but gathering more numbers is what needs to be accomplished right now, and that's happening before our eyes.

Has anyone watched the news specials on 60 minutes and Fox about the fact that congressional members use nonpublic knowledge to do some massive insider trading... the same practice would get all the rest of us HUGE jail time, but our political elite use it to line their own pockets. It's happening in both parties, on an overwhelming scale. It's even being used to short against our own economy! Meanwhile nothing is done about it, and no one is protesting this....

Sickening. Get them all out of there and start again. And the portion of the OWS people that think that Obama isn't just as deep into all this corporatism and corruption as everyone else is, are simply blinded by political leanings. IMHO.

I was just watching the news about the protests going on here in Portland and they showed a poll that conducted on the the news stations website.78% of the people that responded chose the option that the occupy's method of delivery had hurt their message and only caused people to dislike them.

Protesting is all good, but when you don't have a defined goal it is pointless. I literally saw a guy in the crowd with a sign that said: Where's Waldo Now?

of course the tea party had a clear message. it was wholly created astro-turf fake populist movement. it was created by astro-turf organisations, marketers and the right wing media.

this is an organic movement but it is growing. who knows where it will end up. i think it's fluidity is part of it's strength. it definitely isn't slowing down.

all the people complaining that there is no message basically think the message should be the same of the tea party. funny how that is.

don't fall for that "focused message" shit. the message is clear enough, and further interpretation should be left up to each individual, manifesting itself in the voting booths.

Those who want a message, are those that don't understand the message already being relayed, and never will.

The message is clear?

Okay, then here's an easy one for you:

Who do the OWS protesters want for president in 2012?

If you can't answer that, perhaps it's time to reconfigure the strategy.

Yeah... My wife and I and our friends, that have been going since the Nov of 2008, are still waiting for someone to pay for our travel, provide us with signs, feed us, etc..... Funny that no one I have ever met at any of the Tea Party rallies had ever been paid to be there. I wonder what all that "astro-turf" money was actually used for, since when I have gone to left-wing rallies, they have people organizing free buses, free pre-printed signs, etc, etc....

You really should just try going to a tea party rally as opposed to believing everything you are spoon fed just because it concurs with your world view and makes you feel good. When the truth is conveniently available to you, by simply going to a local event, why not use your own eyes and ears to find it out for yourself? I have been to the OWS Miami events twice so far, since I personally like to know for myself. Obviously I also rely on media, but I try to spread out my sources since every source is biased. I would suggest that you do the same. Don't be a spoon fed lamb.

That's irrelevant. It's about the way things are done, not who signs the bill.

We aren't against wall street.... we are against big government that lends itself to corporatism, and corruption, and thus stifles capitalism, and eventually leads to facism.

Like I said in the earlier post...

Leave the strategizing to the Koch bros and the tea party

OWS is a message to leave an impression on us all that, again, will hopefully reflect in the voting booths

Dude, I am only playing devil's advocate here.

Change requires a strategy, not a vague group of disenfranchised campers.

I WANT the OWS group to come up with a specific agenda - I really do.

Until then, they will be taken less seriously every day.

There is a decent group of local business owners in the financial district who have gotten together because they are ruining local business a lot more then they are doing anything to the banks. Its pretty against what they are for.

I couldn't disagree more. This needs to be the main topic of discussion for any debate between Obama boy and which ever dolt the Republicans decide to run against him. If they don't pull it off in the next few months, it will be four more years of crap.

They need to protest the Republican nominations, and future debates with Obama.

The problem isn't the banking industry; The banking industry saw a chance to make money and they fucked us in the process. Don't change the laws that allowed this to happen, they'll do it again. We need to take this directly to Washington - Not pissing off the rest of the 99% on the subways in NYC.

Until then, they will be taken less seriously every day.
there have been multiple statements, manifestos. don't be an idiot and use google.

I agree with this, except for this line...

"The banking industry saw a chance to make money and they fucked us in the process"

More honestly, it should read...

"The banking industry saw a chance to pay off our government to get their way, and fucked us in the process"

I know man this isn't an attack - just saying worry less about what "THEY" think about OWS and more about what YOU think of OWS. fuck "them" - they don't want to understand.

why did the original (can i stress that enough? lol) boston tea party dump tea into the harbor w/o a focused bullet point message?

or how about the LA riots? one of the most unorganized cluster fucks of violence in recent history, that no one really condoned, yet the message was clear and brought about changes.

I'm not going to play that game. If the OWS people walk around with signs that say "Google It" then they should just stay home.

I don't like the way our government is being run right now, and if the OWS movement has any chance of making a change, it needs SPECIFIC goals!

This doesn't help the OWS movement in any way, and this is considered a liberal show...

This again? The shipyard union members supported the general strike as well, they just weren't allowed to join it contractually.

It's amazing how many of the employed are walking with these protesters. The live feed has Verizon workers holding signs saying they are the 99%. News orgs are estimating 20-30k people.

The unions should support this type of a movement. They are in fact the 99%. But how does preventing them from doing their jobs and earning a paycheck help?

Today multiple restaurants and coffee shops on Wall Street shut down, locked their doors, and send their employees home. Brilliant. In the middle of a financial crisis, let's shut down small businesses and cause employees to loose a day's worth of work.

It's just counter productive to their message.

Those people, those unions, chose not to work and walk with the 99% in protest. So, they didn't cause employees to lose a day of work, the employees and unions chose to protest. How is freedom of choice counter productive to anything?
