Don't ever do a brake job on an early 90s Honda Accord

If you have a vehicle with captive rotors, leave your chair immediately, run outside and find a mechanic - have the mechanic convert your braking system to something reasonable - do it now - there is no time to lose, here.

Captive rotor braking systems are dangerous because:

1. When you're changing the rotors you may murder someone
2. If you have the rotors changed somewhere, who ever does it may murder you
3. You're supposed to replace the whole hub assembly instead of just changing rotors which could cause rioting once people find out how much it costs

I'm all afternoon and into late evening out in the cold yesterday thanks to bad engineering.. Honda is pretty damn good at turning tin into something half way drivable that will run forever like some kind of bionic cockaroach.. but on this one they can SUCK IT.

If anyone ever approaches you asking you to work on their early nineties Honda Accord braking system, the correct quote is $48,379 PER SIDE. The guy who helped me quoted me $70 not realizing the car had these captive rotors and now he hates himself. I don't think the poor man will ever be the same

i have a 2006 honda crv and just replaced front and rear pads and rotors with no problem i did a google search on captive rotors and could not find a good reason why they would be hard to replace.

Oh well, fuck it - the shop wanted close to $500 and I got it done for the $70 I paid the guy (he is ASE certified and has done this shit all of his life, plus he take the time to make sure everything is done RIGHT) and I ended up spending $25 on a new rotor since we broke one. I saved $400 and that is a lot to me. I wouldn't do it again. LoL!!

I don't do brake jobs for friends unless they are straight forward disc designs. Drum brakes are "easy" but the springs are a pain in the ass, and I won't touch anything that will take me more than 30 minutes PER SIDE (front and rear) without the use of a lift or air tools.

The crazy part is.. this guy who worked on it for me not only stuck with his original price.. but he took all kinds of extra time taking care of little details like finding the correct specs and turning the rotor himself(they turn rotors at the parts store for $10 - but this guy knew them so he just waltzes back there and starts showing the guy who was supposed to do it HOW to do it, and they ended up not charging me). He even packed and banded the CV boot for me at no extra charge (5 minute job but still, I appreciated it).

Even more crazy he told me if I know anyone else who needs this done he only wants $75 per side!!

You seem to know what you're talking about a lot of the time, but you're completely wrong. On a normal car you take the wheel of, move the caliper out of your way, take a couple bolts out and BLAM - the rotor is off.

On this car you have to take all kinds of other shit apart and then there are these two pieces that are so well stuck together they may as well be fucking welded.

You have to spray it with penetrating oil (which isn't a good idea for other reasons, but you have to) and then hammer and hammer and pry and hammer and fight with it until it finally BEGINS to break free. There's no way around that - we had an air hammer and everything else.

The guy I was working with is ASE certified and has been a mechanic his whole life.

he's right. I've been there and it ain't fun.

But if you want real fun, try changing the air brakes on a garbage truck, where you have to clamp an extremely high pressure spring with a vise grip, hoping that it doesn't come loose and shoot through your head -- all the while dodging garbage juice drippings from the hopper(the place where all the garbage goes).

You can't use a torch because you'll destroy the bearing .. we used a torch for some of the other shit.. and like I said, we had air impact tools.. and sledge hammers and air hammers
