I appear now the other sites will be more mindful of acting on DMCA notices and not actively encouraging stolen material. Youtube has added some good features for producers to allow their content to be on the site in exchange for a share of the ad revenue. Perhaps some other sites will do the same - working legally with the people who invested in producing the material.

I don't see that happening now, but who ever buys them might show up.

Doubtful.

There are many tubes I see in a 5 minute search who offer 'incentives' to their members to upload content. While I am not going to say they proactive know it's all stolen or what not (as there is an exception to every rule). Looking at most profiles you can see that the content is mismatched and watermarked from a ton of different companies.

Most who I doubt would knowingly allow full length anything uploaded.

That made a difference.

SOPA only deals with sites not hosted in America.

So you don't really make the point you were aiming for.

But what of it?
There is no such thing as extra-territorial jurisdiction.
US laws stop at US borders.

SOPA could not seize servers that are not on US soil.
SOPA could not affect advertising networks that are not on US soil.
Look at Internet gambling as an example of making it illegal for VISA and other US companies to process their payments -- they are still in business aren't they?

pretty crappy the US is able to shutter someones business without any due process.

due process IS due process and should never be sacrificed... for that would make us like Iran, China & N. Korea.

I'm asking myself the same thing.

Maybe he was put in there as an informer or something, the guy is in the music industry and his wife is Alicia Keys so this shutdown benefits him and the people he mingles with the most.

Read the indictment http://www.scribd.com/doc/78786408/Mega-Indictment

They were charged under the RICO statute -- organized crime and racketeering for criminal copyright infringement.

Let's see how the Defendants answer the charges at trial ... They are looking at as much as 55 years at Fed-Med.

See the Third Party Defendants whose property is being seized p. 18 - 20

Mega is probably guilty as fuck but they shuttered someones business a year ago that was cleared of all charges. After the government stalled the court case, never gave them the info that was legally requested, refused to drop the shit and put them out of business.

As BF would say, they are all strangers to me.

I believe if they all went down tomorrow my profits would skyrocket as conversions would tighten big time across all affil programs.

SE traffic would go up big time.

But they are here. No probs with legal tubes.

I doubt tubes will get touched at all. They want these multi-file sharing sites/forums that also share all TV, movies ect.

Over 25million recent links now useless, 300Million historical links wiped out.

This will annoy the fuck out of all the sites linking to the site too, which is a good thing. There are heaps of forums and sites dedicated to Megaupload links... I hope they suffer too.

I think they have something like a 90%+ conviction rate because most will plead out rather than to take a risk at trial and face a 30 or 40 yr sentence.

Yes, that's how it works with 'crime'; when someone gets busted everyone else just gives up.

It's about piracy, but they're stupid because they seriously delude themselves that this kind of thing has any positive benefit whatsoever for them. Anti-piracy crusaders, like 99.9% of everyone else, do not give a single fuck about pornographers. And yet morons here actually seem to think this is about them in some way.

Though to be fair, some morons are just cheering because they were jealous of MU's success.

But my point was, let's say you own one of the sites that is on the "list". You are in the US, Canada*, Great Britain* or US friendly countries.

You made your money. Do you want to dangle that site in front of the DOJ with your name attached. Give up all your money when it is seized? All your property when it is confiscated? Do hard time?

When more prosecutions come down I would not be surprised to see some file sharing sites fold.

* Thought I would draw the Canooks and Brits in. Jurisdiction may not be there with the US but I would not be so sure. And I still would take my butt off the chopping block.

smart crimies know that if they are operating the way that the busted one did, they exit and/or re-organize

piracy is not new and will never go away. the problem here (and what hurts business) is with how blatant, rampant, and easily accessible it is

This is true. Lots of shit will no longer sell but the stuff that marginally sells will sell better. It won't sell worse.

So win some lose some. Pirates had their day. It is ending very tragicly for some of the Long John Silvers.

DOJ doesnt fuck around and these guys will lose all assets to pay restitution and will get hard time to set an example.

Some probably will think twice, though others will just see an opening/opportunity to fill a void here. Whenever I've heard about drug crimelords, or organized criminals of any kind, who got busted after getting rich, I think why didn't they just give up after their first several million?

Maybe they're idiots, or maybe, like 'legit' billionaires, the money is just a byproduct of them doing what they like doing. Either way filesharing sites will not stop, especially when they not in and of themselves illegal or criminal.

Edit: And good luck giving 50 years to someone from a country that does not bend over and take it from Uncle Sam, the way US satellite states like NZ or the UK do.

Right, that's why SOPA wanted to cut off the DNS which is in America.

MU thought they were either legit, above the law, smarter than the law, or a mixture thereof. not necessarily the same as a drug boss who KNOWS they are breaking the law,... a primary function of their business is to avoid detection.

feds taking down MU was just as much about the message as it was about stopping the crime. and, unless they are idiots, the people with the same 'business models' as MU will hear the message and restructure or GTFO
