Better advice: Get a good suitcase and take a slow boat to China.

Maybe they are legit. They have not been found guilty of anything.

feds taking down MU was just as much about the message as it was about stopping the crime. and, unless they are idiots, the people with the same 'business models' as MU will hear the message and restructure or GTFO
The mistake is to assume that if you take out a file sharing site you're going to stop people sharing files. It simply will not make a difference to piracy. But that's beside the point anyway; it's quite obvious that a lot of people cheering about this were simply jealous of the money made by the people running MU.

I'm wondering if MU was shut down less because of Megaupload, which is AFAIK is no different to many other fileshare sites, and more because of Megavideo. I personally never ever used MU but used MV frequently.

Maybe they're idiots, or maybe, like 'legit' billionaires, the money is just a byproduct of them doing what they like doing. Either way filesharing sites will not stop, especially when they not in and of themselves illegal or criminal.

Edit: And good luck giving 50 years to someone from a country that does not bend over and take it from Uncle Sam, the way US satellite states like NZ or the UK do.
Your right about the organized crime, a lot of major drug dealers do it not just for the money but also because it's what they do best and some of them don't really know how to live a life without crime. They like everything that comes along with the money (well except for the getting caught part, but even then most accept it and just consider it a part of the game).

Very very true, but nonetheless, companies with similar business models have to be calculating 'maybe they aren't, and if they aren't....' etc. The years they could be waiting for the judgement to come down on MU, continuing "business as usual" are years that can/will be used against them if MU is found guilty. Think back to the early 2257 busts. It's the same thing - a "get your shit together" message.

Like I said - I agree that this doesn't stop piracy, but it is still a message to sites that enable piracy. And that can make a difference. Jealousy? Yeah maybe we all are envious of the fast and easy money they made. Same as with drug lords and such....until you get to the jail part

Exactly. The dif is $4.99 they charge vs at least $19.99.

People LOVE to DL incl lots of porn. That is what people do on the web.

Tons for Free (or $4.99) vs a little for $19.99. Simple as that. Many have free downloading that works.

Now that the numbers are coming out we see they have a ton of members. A ton.

What happened is a huge victory for legit content producers and it cripples piracy tremendously. Because starting today filelockers are now being known as "criminal" which means that a growing amount of companies and individuals won't want to work with/for them anymore. And that includes Visa, MasterCard and PayPal. Of course it's impossible to kill piracy completely but severely crippling it will be second best.

biggest mistake

hit mega upload after they were the victim of a bogus dmca take down
in the sme month they introduced a new music serice that pays artist 90%
and a new program that pays musicians when their songs are shared.
they obey the DMCA takedown notices process.

and it happened the exact week that sopa died.

Thanks for the clarification.

I hope SOPA passes as well.

Also I would like to see a few more file sharing sites to go away.

But what of it?
There is no such thing as extra-territorial jurisdiction.
US laws stop at US borders.

SOPA could not seize servers that are not on US soil.
SOPA could not affect advertising networks that are not on US soil.
Look at Internet gambling as an example of making it illegal for VISA and other US companies to process their payments -- they are still in business aren't they?

Whats interesting is that the FBI delivered warrants to NZ data centers AND 8, hats EIGHT other countries...This is an international concerted effort, finally.
I would expect oron will have to deal with the music pretty soon.
You guys realize one they opened incentive affiliate programs all are now targets for money laundering and RICO statutes... Just about every country, I imagine has anti-racketeering laws, except maybe Russia but Russia will get hit for other reasons...

I got this from cnet:

My sources tell me the timing of the Megaupload arrests was no accident. The federal government, they say, was spoiling for a fight after the apparent defeat of SOPA/PIPA and not a little humiliation at the hands of the Web. And what better way to bolster the cause for cyber-crackdown than by pointing to a massive display of cyber-terrorism at the hands of everyone's favorite Internet boogeyman: Anonymous?

If the SOPA/PIPA protests were the Web's moment of inspiring, non-violent, hand-holding civil disobedience, #OpMegaUpload feels like the unsettling wave of car-burning hooligans that sweep in and incite the riot portion of the play. The result is always riot gear, tear gas, arrests, injury, and a sea of knee-jerk policies, laws, and reactions that address the destructive actions of a few, and not the good intentions of the many.

I don't truly know whether Anonymous was cleverly goaded into #OpMegaUpload. But I do know that an attack this big on this many government sites will effectively erase those good Internet vibrations that were rattling around Capitol Hill this week, and harden the perspective of legislators and law enforcement who want to believe that the Web community is made up of wild, law-breaking pirates. That, ultimately, may help strengthen the business--and the emotional--case for the pro-SOPA, pro-PIPA lobby. Did the feds just get the last lulz?

they obey the DMCA takedown notices process.

Yep a two and a half year long multi national investigation just happened to have been concocted in that very same week.

FFS give me a break.

Firstly, warrants were executed overnight in several countries, Australia and NZ being two of the many involved. Secondly if you read between the lines of the official statements being made then this is probably the first of many takedown operations that will transpire this year.

Anyone processing a hundred million dollars is going to attract the attention of all sorts of authorities.

Fact is Megaupload offered inducements, constantly failed to act against infringements and according to the police they have pretty good evidence that they even engaged in deliberate infringements themselves.

The raids will have happened because the investigation was at that stage, not because of what was going on politically. Global actions like this take lots of preparation and depend on many factors.
