That's one definition of addiction - when one has lost the power of choice. Later they may be offered a choice to put in the extreme effort to recover or not at a time when they can see the truth about themselves. Rationality is completely gone in the grip of addiction, so any 'choice' is completely irrational - therefore, 'choice' as we know it, simply doesn't come into it (at the time of addiction).
