If you are at all interested into the actual reasons why the Jews went "like lambs to the slaughter", it is because they were taught, all through history, that any terrible thing happening to them was God's wrath being carried out against them in retaliation for the Jews breaking their covenant with God in some way. They thought that they should not fight it because God was picking them out for special punishment.

Reaction to this view was the basis of Zionism, which is a determination that: 1, The Jews should have a homeland of their own where no government can do this to them, and 2, that they should never go meekly like this ever again.


(p.s. the reason why Jews were so involved in the bolshevik revolution (and I'm the furthest from the evils of communism as you can get), was that they were fighting the anti-jewish Pogroms being carried out under the Tzars.
