RIP Guitarist Bob Welch (Fleetwood Mac)

Bob Welch committed suicide at age 66 after enduring various health issues for years.

He is probably most well-known for his brief stint with Fleetwood Mac between 1971 and 1974 (he played on 5 Fleetwood Mac albums), but he had a good catalog of songs beyond Fleetwood Mac as well.

Bob Welch was with Fleetwood Mac during the transition period when the band went from a stripped-down hard rock blues band to a more pop-oriented sound with the later addition of Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham.

After leaving Fleetwood Mac, Bob Welch hooked up with two sons of early TV comedien Soupy Sales, to form a band named Paris (the Sales brothers went on to play with David Bowie in Tin Machine).

The songs I most will remember Bob Welch for are his solo songs...

Senitmental Lady is a lovely slow dance song that I enjoyed immediately when it came out (this was actually the 2nd release for the song, since it was on a previous Fleetwood Mac album years earlier); for me, it was one of those defining summer songs that came along during one summer while I had been spending a lot of time in the Philippines (young, dumb, and full of cum)...music is so special and wonderful for helping one to fondly recall old memories (my wife and I hugged and danced to it a short time ago):

Sadly, a handful of old rockers have opted recently to commit suicide, mostly due to health concerns...

RIP Bob Welch

QFT! Thanks!!!

Seriously, I have played guitar for decades, and I still don't have a clue about how to craft a beautiful song like Sentimental Lady. Robbie is an accomplished guitarist and he can tell you how hard it is to produce songs that have any chance to make it up the Billboard 100. Sometimes creating the song is the easy part. Getting it recorded, promoted and distributed, and still making a few dollars is a long-shot at best. The music business is way dirtier and more cutthroat than the jizz biz.

Bob Welch was fortunate in many ways. I didn't know until today that he had a fondness for France, since that is where he attended the Sorbonne, and Paris is where Fleetwood Mac located him when they had a vacancy for a guitarist and singer.

Straightforward pop-rock ditty there, and I could probably learn to play it, but I would give my left nut to be able to craft songs like Bob Welch could, sell records, and fill concert halls (well, if I could give up another body part, say my appendix, that would be better, since I like having two nuts to play with).

Instead, I like to live vicariously through rock stars, the same way I guess that members of my site like to watch and imagine that they are in the scene. Come to mention, it so would I, damn it! I'm always near the action (filming), but never in the action!

Not everyone rises to the level of an Eric Clapton, but there are many who put their hearts and souls into their music nonetheless. Bless them.

Damn... listening to that makes me want to grab a Cali Cab, roll a nice doobie, snort some fine Peruvian pearlescent pink flake, and get back in the hot tub with two hot foxes on the deck at my Marin pad overlooking the Bay.

Rest in peace. Fleetwood Mac in that middle period sure had some angelic harmonies so he is probably going to be welcomed with open wings....

i heard on the radio he offed his self

Guitarist and singer Bob Welch, whose work in the early 1970s for Fleetwood Mac set the stage for the band?s multi-platinum success later in the decade, died on Thursday at his home in Nashville, Tenn.. He was 66.

According to a spokesman for the Nashville Police Department, Welch was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The spokesman said Welch?s wife, Wendy, told police he had been suffering from health issues.

Welch joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971 as a 24-year-old living in Paris, just as the group was making the transition away from being a British blues rock band and into the 1970s commercial powerhouse that it became.

That sucks. I saw a crawl on the tv briefly but it went off before it said it was suicide. Really sad that just because of medical issues and pain, people feel so helpless and a burden on others to take this choice.

RIP to another great.

He surely would have gotten a contact high being anywhere near the Snow Queen (Stevie Nicks) - even though they weren't members of Fleetwood Mac at the same time, they jammed together occasionally, and were friends despite the legal issues affecting the band over the years (and they were in a massive band that over time included well over 20 different players, not counting the USC marching band, lol).

Quote:
After the death Thursday afternoon of Bob Welch -- the guitarist, singer and songwriter best known for his early work with Fleetwood Mac -- a number of peers, former bandmates and colleagues have released statements praising the late musician.

In an interview with Reuters, Mick Fleetwood, who hired Welch in 1971 after the departure of Peter Green, said Welch was a key part of the band's evolution. "He was a huge part of our history which sometimes gets forgotten. Mostly his legacy would be his songwriting abilities that he brought to Fleetwood Mac, which will survive all of us," said Fleetwood. "If you look into our musical history, you'll see a huge period that was completely ensconced in Bob's work."

And although Stevie Nicks and Welch weren't in Fleetwood Mac at the same time, she released a statement Friday morning expressing her admiration and regrets: "The death of Bob Welch is devastating .... I had many great times with him after Lindsey and I joined Fleetwood Mac. He was an amazing guitar player -- he was funny, sweet -- and he was smart -- I am so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac -- so, so sad ..."

This morning Pop & Hiss received a note from songwriter David Adelstein, who served as Welch's keyboard player from 1977 through 1982, just after the release of the "French Kiss" album that propelled Welch into the top 20. "I was hired and we rehearsed at one of Mick Fleetwood's homes in Topanga for the next three months," Adelstein wrote. "In January 1978 the band began rehearsals in a sound stage at Sunset & Beachwood."

Adelstein shared a few recollections of his experience in Welch's band, and, with his permission, are excerpted below:

"For me, they were very exciting times back then. We were the opening act for Dave Mason back around February 12, 1978, our first show at Rocklyn College, NY. A short time later, Bob was leading us up the stairs to what was the biggest crowd I've ever seen, Cal-Jam II. We opened the show with a 10:00 AM call! That was a rush -- 250,000 people in the crowd at the old Ontario Motor Speedway. During that tour, Bob opened shows for not only Dave Mason, but for Jefferson Starship, Heart, Beach Boys, Styx, Allman Bros. and of course [Fleetwood] Mac (a great billing -- the best of both worlds).

"When it came to the follow up album, Bob and his producer, John Carter, gave me my first opportunity to play on that album. When it came around to the third album, Bob gave myself and guitarist Todd Sharp the opportunity to include an original song on the album. This launched my songwriting career.

"All in all, I have awesome memories from my time playing with Welch, sharing dinners at some wonderful restaurants (he appreciated great food), along with his love of music and that included all kinds of music! The circle of friends here in the LA area ... are already missing him much."

Not my point, but thanks for playing.

Here's a sample of Robbie and Claudia-Marie playing:

Now let's see you play...

Who knows? You might be good - GFY actually has several people with musical talents, which is not all that surprising, since many people on the production side of the biz are often inclined towards a variety of creative arts.
