I actually get too picky in fact and ruin things for myself I used to love that movie WEST WORLD and one day I asked myself. If they are robots, why didn't the gun just not shoot fake bullets? Now I can't watch it anymore

I try to, cause I like the show so much, but I actually get tougher on shows like this where the guys (by guys I mean the writers on the show, not the characters in the show) are brilliant but seem lazy on certain episodes. As opposed to something like SONS OF ANARCHY which has me laughing all the way through it every season it is on with those cartoon bikers

This is also what pissed me off with PROMETHEUS. I mean, I'm sorry. This is Ridley Scott. I expect 100 percent Godlike perfection. But I guess he's only human too in the end

Yes, THE SHIELD was awesome. Probably the best thing FX ever made besides it's comedies. It had one slow season with Glen Close but picked up again When Forest Whitaker showed up without getting overly exploitative like most of the FX dramas.

NIP/TUCK started out good too, but was nothing but pure over the top exploitation by the time it ended.

Speaking of the THE SHIELD, has anyone been watching BOSS on STARZ? Kelsey Grammer is doing to FRAISER what Chiklis did to THE COMMISH (by doing THE SHIELD) with this show.

I don't know I like Louie and that's FX. Different genre though.

The Shield was another great one. Probably a close third to BB and The Wire on my list of favorites.

Isn't LOUIE a comedy? FX makes great comedies. ARCHER, THE LEAGUE, WILFRED (This old thing called TESTIES that I can't believe failed). Problem to me is that their dramas have become unintentional comedies (again in my opinion). But whatever works for them. They survive on selling ad space and regular broadcast television (non cable) is just filler space between sales pitches.

That's why it's even more amazing when things like BREAKING BAD and MAD MEN actually get made on stations with commercial advertising. This is AMC though.

Example on FX: (this keeps making me laugh over and over just thinking about it and this is just one of the things on this series) On SONS OF ANARCHY, the two broads (mother and girlfriend) are killing themselves all season to hide some papers or notes or some fucking thing from the punk in line to take over SAMCRO. Then in the last show (or the one before it) when he reads it, he literally says out loud in dialogue "What does this mean?" Now that is just fucking too funny to me.

Not to mention it took him like 3 seasons to finish his father's novel and this is supposed to be a kid who's going to take over a criminal organization. I mean you can watch documentaries about 1%ers that should give you enough info to write more believable characters than I see on this show.

I agree that Prometheus could have been better. While visually it's almost perfect, the writing was both ambitious and lazy, which is always a bad combo.

The thing that bothered me most about it was the pointless surgery machine - it reminded me of that scene in 'Thank You For Smoking' where they are discussing the possibility of having a character smoke in space and Rob Lowe says, "Easy fix, one line of dialogue: thank god they invented that machine that allows you to smoke in space."

BB's place in the pantheon of great shows depends on its conclusion - The Shield was a great show from start to finish. The final season/episodes/scene were tone perfect and put a perfect period on a perfect ride.

The Wire is a little bit too all over the place, IMO.

I disagree with this. To me THE WIRE took a base theme each season and advanced on the topic with thematic episodes. I actually had no idea Baltimore was such a shit hole until that series. I had heard that about East St. Louis but Baltimore is famous for Sports and Edgar Allen Poe. You hear this shit about places like Harlem and South Central but in fact those areas really aren't as bad as the media hypes them up to be.

The thing I loved about THE WIRE was the way the bad guys weren't really bad guys and the good guys weren't really good guys. The cops were some of the worst pieces of shit on the planet and some of the drug dealers had morality and integrity. Also, no one ever got what they deserved good or bad (actually this isn't true entirely, but it took a long time to get there for a lot of the characters). There was none of these cardboard cartoon characters you see on most crappy cop shows.

Anyways, that's just my opinion but GAME OF THRONES does a lot of this too (fleshing out the characters and making sure people don't necessarily get what they deserve). I like writing that doesn't end in Disneyland themes and bullshit happy endings (unless the characters really earn the happy ending) Even on positive endings, I personally usually like more of a bittersweet resolve than some off into the sunset bullshit.

Been catching up on breaking bad on Netflix. I did NOT want yet, another series to watch and fiend over. When Sarah Jayne put the first episode on, I was HOOKED like a meth addict. We are about 1/2 way through season 3. I don't usually do the long marathons like the OP (it's usually dinner time viewing), but I can easily watch 2 episodes in one sitting. Great show!

That's how I got into it the first time around. I actually did this before season 4 because I only watched a couple episodes and didn't keep going when it was first broadcast.

It is actually one of the best series ever written and reason you should give a series a few episodes at least before you judge.

I finally got around to seeing this show, just started into season 4 now.. damn is this one intense.. grabs you from the get go.

why are we comparing this to the wire? The wire reads like a novel, this one is a thriller. Not even close to being the same thing.

The Wire is the best written show ever.

Mad Men is a close second. The reason more people don't give Mad Men more credit for it's writing is because 90% of the shit goes right over most people's head. Its fucking brilliant shit.

A good example is the toothache/abscess Draper was developing. No one I've talked to got the significance of the ache and the rotted teeth. They thought it was just a useless plot point. In reality it was symbolic.

I would argue the reason people don't give Mad Men credit is because it isn't very good. I mean unless you like being hit over the head with really obvious symbolism.

But since you are the Mad Men expert, do explain to me the deep symbolism of the dogs fucking...

I believe he is holding the GPS device that he put on Jessie's car. Showing it to Jessie to let him know how he knew that Jessie was at Gus's house the night before and didn't poison him. Walt and Jessie then fight and beat the shit out of each other and Jessie tells Walt to never come back again.
